I had a few NB size GMD workhorse fitteds and I didn't really care for them. They were snaps though and that's way too much work for a NB. Had they been velcro I may have liked them more. They did the job but I much preferred my prefolds especially because DD had super chunk legs and outgrew the fitteds well before she sized up in prefolds. I have some older hand-me down OsoCozy fitteds and they're pretty great. They were my go to before I started in on pockets. They're faster to put on than prefolds and are great for giving LO some cover free time because they don't move around the way prefolds do without a cover.
Personally, I'd wait until your LO is bigger to move into sized fitteds. Otherwise, you're spending a lot of money on diapers that she'll only wear for a short period. Once my DD hit 20 lbs (at 3 months) she maxed out on her diaper size and has been in the same size ever since. If I'd purchased sized fitteds for her in the early months I would have spent a fortune. Not all babies grow like that but it gives you an idea of the impact waiting a few months can have.
Thanks for the input. I am just trying to figure out what to do. The one size pockets I have are very big and bulky on her right now and I am not sure that I like prefolds. I bought infant size, but I hate that they are too long and I have to fold down a portion to make them fit properly and I don't like that huge roll of fabric across her tummy. I don't know. I think I will like CDing a lot better when she is bigger. Right now it just seems like nothing fits properly and everything leaks and I'm trying to figure out how to proceed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
How much does she weigh? Does she have skinny or chunky thighs? Are you having pee leaks or poo leaks? There are a ton of different folds to try. If putting them lengthwise is too long you can turn them and use them perpendicular to baby. My DD was about 6 weeks and 13 lbs when she was ready for infant size prefolds. Don't give up on them! There's just so much change in the first few weeks that what works one week may not the next.
Try this fold - http://diaperpages.com/bikini_twist.php. It'll make it shorter without folding it down and perhaps help with leaks.
She weighs about 8lbs, 5oz now and she has skinny little legs. I have used the bikini twist fold and I definitely like it the best. I just feel like it isn't tight enough around her thighs....but...this one hasn't leaked. I think I just need a little more practice with it. The leaks I've gotten have been with the OS pockets, not with prefolds. I don't know if it's because they are too big or what. I don't like them at this phase because, like the prefolds, I have to fold down the inserts at the end because they are so long.
I was handed down some OS Snug-to-Fit (which they also sell on GMD) fitted diapers, in mixed snaps and velcro. I must say, I loved them, although DD was a little bigger when I started using them. I agree with Erin that I strongly gravitated toward the velcro over the snaps, though. I thought it would be the reverse, since velcro is so annoying in the laundry and gets all ugly, but it's just so much easier to put on that I stopped caring about that pretty quickly.
Two things I like about fitteds: As Erin mentioned, they are good for airing out without having a risky naked bottom (especially once baby is big enough to be mobile) and that they are very easy and quick to put on, but dry much faster than AIOs (especially the ones with a flap).
All in all, I would recommend them.
