    Default Hemp Stink--- HELP!

So I bought some used hemp inserts a few months ago to use overnight. I LOVE them, as far as a nighttime solution. We've only had 2 leaks and I'm pretty sure it's because the diaper wasn't adjusted right. BUT, they stink. They have always had a smell. It doesn't smell like ammonia, so I just thought it was what hemp smelled like. Well, the past week it's gotten really strong. And I bought 2 new ones with my last order from Kelly's Closet and used them for the first time last night. No stink. So I put 2 and 2 together. Those other inserts are in major need of some attention. I have just been washing them with the rest of my diaper laundry. Cold rinse. Hot wash with Rockin Green. Double Rinse. I try to sun them dry, but it has been raining a lot lately so the dryer has been my friend. And at least once a week I will soak over night. I had to do a double wash with my whole stash this past week too because they smelled. Never had that before. I'm thinking it's all the new poop smells from starting solids...

So, what do I need to do? Thanks!
    -Danielle

I've been thinking about this. I think first up is stripping the hemp inserts by lots of hot washes. There might be detergent build up from the last owner that is giving it it's stinkies. Hopefully that solves the problem. It's the easiest solution that can't lead to more issues!

When you're soaking them are you just soaking them in water? I was under the impression that soaking wasn't super great for stink. You're pretty much just breeding bacteria unless there's lots of soap.

I was wondering what good soaking really does. I've never soaked my diapers at all.

Hm... never thought of soaking in that way before. That's what the bag of Rockin Green recommends for excessive buildup or residue. When I soak I add TTO as well as the detergent. I washed them with my other diapers this morning and then again twice with hot water only and I'm about to do it again.

    Think that will be enough?

Hopefully it'll be enough! Come back and post. If you're still having issues, we can go out on the great ol' internet and hopefully find more answers for you. I know I'd be frustrated since hemp can be soooo great! I love having a hemp insert for at night!

I think my babies just have smelly pee. Even my brand new ones smelled the 2nd time I used them. Grr.

Have you tried boiling them or washing with vinegar?

You can also try a small amount of bleach. What I did in the past was add about 1/4 cup bleach to a full washer of cold water and then add my hemp. I let it sit for maybe 20 minutes, spin out and wash normally. The stink was 100% gone. HTH

So a lot of googling came up with that some people think that hemp naturally smells more than others. I also ran across some people saying that hemp harbors bacteria more than others which can cause a smelly hemp. I'd say if it's just the hemp that it's worth a try to use a small amount of bleach with them. Maybe even just do a pot wash with hot water and some bleach to see if it helps. I wonder if some brands smell more than others naturally. I just have hemp babies large diaper doublers that I use and no problems so far.

I think I will try boiling water and vinegar first. If that doesn't work I will try bleach. Stinky morning diapers aren't fun... And then they make the entire pail smelly. :/
