So.. I wanted so badly to cloth diaper. I got a great deal on some second hand diaps from a friend. I tried when she was just a few weeks old, but she has no butt and they wouldn't stay on (even the xs's). When she was 6 weeks old, I tried again and it worked better, but still only SOME of my diaps fit. When she was 6 months old, we were fully cloth during the day.. but I couldn't get the cleaning right. We'd go from poopy smell to ammonia smell and repeat. I have a HE front loader and didn't have time to soak them in the tub every 2 days. So I started loading them up and taking them to my mom's house (she has a top loader), but my ADHD homeschooler doesn't school well there. Too many fun distractions. And I can't stand to be there for 4 hours twice a week (her house is so unkept). So the last 2 times we went, I rushed the job. Came home and had them stink fresh out of the dryer (I'd bring them home wet to dry). So I went back the next day and soaked them and soaked them and soaked them, and washed them and soaked them and washed them, and rinsed them and ......... I thought I rinsed them enough, but first one worn and as soon as she peed, helloooo ammonia!
So... we have been full time disposables since two weeks before Thanksgiving.
I'm in a state in my life where I'm barely getting the clothes washed and barely getting the floors swept and DH is lucky if he doesn't have to get a dish out of the dishwasher to use cause they aren't making it to the cupboards. So I really don't have time to strip the diapers and soak and rinse and all that. And it would be a FULL day of washing them before using them, cause after that 1st one presented with ammonia smell, I just put them all right back in the wet bag and they've been sitting this whole time.
I feel bad that I wasn't able to make it work, cause not only did we spend a ton of money on it (I bought a second set of diaps from my friend when she started outgrowing the first set), but now we are spending money on sposies anyway.
Okay.. so this was mostly for my benefit, a vent, get it off my chest and what not.
But what would you all recommend for me to do with the diaps that have been sitting with the ammonia issue for 4+ weeks. I'm thinking I should take them to the consignment store or put them on craigslist an whatnot.. but I can't do that until they are clean. How do I clean them now? Am I screwed? Thanks.
I was gung ho on it with my first. I lasted 6 months. I had major guilt over it. Once I realized that my sanity meant more than what was catching my kids poop, I got over the guilt and switched to sposies, GLADLY! Ah, it was such a relief!
I have One Size Pockets with terrycloth inserts. I have 7 BG's (3 lime green, 2 bright yellow, and 2 rose pink) and 6 or 7 HH's (a couple white, a light purple, a dark purple, a couple different shades of blue).. all snaps. I think I have 20 newborn inserts and 8 or so long inserts. 2 or 3 are resizable inserts. I had a bunch more of different styles and designs, but they didn't work for us so I consigned them.
Okay, I'd start with boiling the inserts. As long as there aren't snaps or velcro boil them. A few in a large pot for 5-10 minutes should help a ton. A bit annoying, but it often rids them of anything gross. The rest you'd just need a lot of hot washes seems like to me. I don't want to recommend using anything else in them since it sounds like they've got something in them causing the issues and we don't want to make it worse.
If any inserts seem old and helpless, you can still sell the rest of the diaper. I know quite a few people don't mind diapers without the inserts because they'll use their own preferred inserts. I see this on FB CD swaps a lot. People care more about the shells than the inserts if they've been CDing.
THANK YOU! I appreciate the help. I'd like to recover a little bit of money so the stress of how much we are spending on sposies is lifted a bit.
Doesn't help that Daniel is still in diapers and he's pretty much outgrown the biggest size sposie and ALL of my cloths. DH would rather potty train him than spend money on ones that will fit him. He's getting POTTY TIME DVD and accessories for Christmas. Sadly, because of his autism.. I'm not too hopeful. He'll be 4 in January. I've looked into medical diapers and would rather spend the money on the extra large cloth.
