Question about diaper rash creams....

So I gather from reading some other threads that you are not supposed to use regular diaper rash creams (Like A&D, desitin, etc...) with cloth diapers....

my question is why not? what does it do to the diapers?

My son was just diagnosed with a yest infection - its actually more on his inner thigh folds than on his butt but the Dr. prescribed a cream - NYSTATIN...so I guess I have to use disposable diapers until it clears up???
honestly I think he got it from the moisture when I put him in prefolds rather than the bumgeniues diapers....

Regular diaper creams cause diapers to repel rather than absorb pee. Which of course is a big issue and requires stripping to get all that stuff off the diapers and back to the way they were.
While there are options for using creams with cloth (like liners), I've ran across quite a few people who had issue with this either from a simple mistake or the liner just not working. I personally recommend using disposables until treatment is over. This way you also have time to disinfect all of your cloth diapers - those yeast buggers will hang out there even through regular washes! I haven't had to deal with yeast and CDs though. Hoping someone chimes in soon about that! I can ask around though.

Okay from Beccasweet (she had this issue once), for washing cloth diapers - vinegar and very hot water. No bleach - it apparently doesn't do a darn thing to those yeast buggers.
You'll want to do this for anything that he comes in contact with that area, so definitely changing pads too!

Ok - thanks so much for the info - I will def. using disposables for now and disenfect the diapers, I am so glad i asked I would not have know that a regular wash would not work!

So many people aren't told what to do about yeast. My friend had thrush and had to wash all of her clothes, her bras, sheets, towels, etc too to make sure they didn't keep just reintroducing it to themselves. Yeast grows easily and is persistent. If not taken care of properly it'll just keep coming back. I know I've read of a few people having thrush that keeps coming back and they don't know why.....but they never washed all those things so it just kept getting back to them causing issues.

Really Jackie? I've always heard vinegar is bad when it comes to yeast and that bleach or GSE are more reliable in killing yeast. While bleach may not kill yeast spores, apparently GSE does. Here are two sources that I found that talk about what to use.
