I'm trying to teach myself to crochet, and I feel at a loss. It is so hard! I can barely do a chain, and even then it comes out too tight in some places, too loose in others... let alone tryign to do more than one row. I was told it was easy! LIES!

*runs back to her faithful sewing machine* I'm going to stick to this for now, maybe try crocheting again later. It has got me too darn frustrated!

Tessa, it is probably in how you 're holding the yarn. Getting a consistent tension is hard in knitting and crocheting.

You might look at some videos on youtube. When I am crocheting or knitting, I wrap the yarn around the pinky finger on my left hand. This helps keep the yarn taut so that you have a good "catch" with the hook. (If the yarn is too slack it is hard to keep it on the hook and pull through the loops and makes the stitches look uneven.)

Maybe Cristy or I (or denastelly, or whoever) can take a picture if you can't find one. Let me know if you need it.

I bought a "I taught myself crochet" booklet that has pictures.. but.. I guess I just can't really learn well from the photos. I try to wrap it around my hand like they say to, but then I can't hold the needle right. I find myself holding it wrongly with two hands, instead of all the yard being in the left hand.

I know it takes practice, and I'm just getting frustrated because I'm not perfect at it right off the bat. I don't have a lot of patience for things I don't have just a natural ability to do with ease.

Also didn't help that my mom is left handed and was trying to help me.. got me all confused!! She says I'm doing it right, ... it just that it looks really ugly.

In that case, I would say start with a wash cloth or trivet, something that can be functional even if it is ugly! That is how I learned both knit and crochet. I still use them as they work fine for what they are and I laugh at where I started. And honestly, I just did a long chain over and over and over until I got the feel for it.

Here are some good links for learning:

I dyed this roving and sent it off to Paty to spin. (She rocks!)

    Want to learn to spin.
What dye are you using on the roving?
