Anything that doesn't have velcro or snaps I boil - so inserts which are usually the big culprit. I bring a huge pot to boil and do a few at a time for 5-10 minutes (been told 10 is overkill but I've done it before lol). A bit time consuming, but it's simple and works. Usually smell is due to detergent build up and that takes care of it. A few hot rinses usually takes care of the rest.
Dawn stripping is better when you have stuff on your fluff - so for some reason it's not absorbing properly.
This is actually the topic for my next CD group meeting. If I learn anything fun or new I'll share!
At the risk of sounding like a nimrod, can you walk me though how you do it? Like, how do you remove a soaked prefold that is full of boiling water without making a mess and burning yourself? Where do you put it? I tried a Dawn strip b/c it was the easiest way but it didn't work. This freaking well water is bad for my diapers and Jordan is getting ammonia burns. :( I am pretty sure our issue is minerals, not detergent. Unless the minerals can cause detergent to build up... not sure about that. I have some Calgon and used it once but either need to do it again or try something else.Quote:

I have the exact same method as Jackie. boil for 5-10 minutes, dump into strainer/pot combo. I think I'm due for another stripping too. getting a bit of stink. I need to switch detergents I think.
When I've stripped, I just squirt some blue dawn into my machine and then do a million rinses. It has helped some but the ammonia comes back quickly. I started adding bleach and the ammonia smell and the burns disappeared COMPLETELY. Seriously, it was like night and day.
The million rinse in the washing machine doesn't work here because I have a front loading HE machine. I don't really have a stink issue, though at times it does smell stronger. DS gets these raised, red lines on his thighs where the diaper sits (at the site of the elastic). I can boil inserts no problem, but I need a good method of stripping the pockets and covers.
Mine is a front load HE machine and the rinse seems to be working good for me. I always put my cloth diapers in and do a rinse(or pre soak in bath tub), wash, rinse, and second rinse if needed. Does your machine have just a single rinse cycle? If it does then that should work for the rinse cycles. Is the raised red welts from the pee or is it from the cover being to tight? I only ask because my DS just had the same thing going on and I put the next size up on him and it went away, especially with the AIO's. If it is the pee try a plain rinse, then add baking soda (I used 1 cup) right in the washer with the diapers and did a wash then a rinse with vinegar and another without. The baking soda and vinegar should balance the diapers PH level back out.
Do you think perhaps he has a sensitivity to whatever is in the elastic? Even though it's covered I've heard of other babies having issues just being near it. Does it happen with any of your covers or just the pockets?
