Default Do you feel like a hoarder sometimes?

I think part of the territory of being frugal is having a difficult time throwing things out. My dad, though not technically a hoarder, since he kept everything in the garage, was never able to throw anything away that he thought he might be able to use "someday." I feel like I inherited that gene. I've been fighting the impulse to save stuff. If it's anything of value, I give it away. Otherwise, I throw it away. But I have years of accumulated junk from years past that I need to get rid of. My biggest problem right now is all the papers (e.g. do we keep paper bills when we do our payments online? should I keep some of the kids' papers from school? what do I do with memos and reminders for upcoming events that I may or may not go to?).

So, how about you? Please tell me I'm not the only one here who struggles with this.

Nope not the only one. Still till this day I struggle with things like that. But I do need to take control and do something about it. We live in a Trailer so space is tight the way it is. I have allot of cleaning on my hands coming this spring/summer especially before the baby comes.

I play(ed) a game online called Runescape and in my "bank" that holds all my stuff I was known the junk collector by all my friends. If they needed something stupid I most likely had it

But from watching the hoarding shows I have watched Hoarders, hoard everything, including trash which is so gross. If there is organization to stuff and it's not all over (like you said he kept it all in the garage) that's just someone who is smart in holding onto stuff like you said, you never know when you might need it.

For kids papers and school stuff I keep all artwork and projects. I don't keep tests or homework because that is too much. I do put A papers on the fridge for a week to show them I am proud but I do throw them away. I have a bookbag for each of my girls that hold the artwork.

Being frugal I feel the same way, it's almost like I know I have enough stuff but I don't because we don't buy and buy and buy! For kids clothing and etc if it's in good condition I will try and re-sell so I can get some extra money to buy what they need. The rest of the stuff we just donate.

Paperwork we only keep important stuff and throw the rest out. Really all I keep on hand are taxes and 401k stuff. We don't have any credit cards. NONE! Bills we pay are just internet, gas, electric and car payment and we pay cash for those through the bill pay at walmart.

I do watch the hoarder show and wonder, but it's also really sad and I feel bad for those on the show.

Nope. Moving keeps that part of me well under control! We're about to move (and not like move within the same city lol) for the 3rd time in two years. I purge so much each move! Feels great to have less junk to worry about!
I've already gotten into the habit of taking digital pictures of Aiden's artwork, so I don't feel like I have to keep all of it.
We've gone paperless for every bill we possibly can.

Taking pictures of artwork sounds like a great idea, but there's another whole can of worms. How do you organize your photos? We have 1000s of photos, and I know I'm never going to go through and sort them all!

We scan all the kids artwork and only save our favorite items. I organize by DS/DD and then by year. Someday I want to make a DVD out of the scans! As I scan I put them into the correct folder. ex Ethan's Artwork, subfolder 2012) I also organize our photos from the camera the same way ex: (Ethan, subfolder 2012, subfolder January) If find downloading and organizing monthly makes the task easy.

We ahve also gone paperless as much as possible on most bills. For bills or other paper we need, we keep it for a limited amount of time and then purge at least once a year.

As far as things - I have a harder time getting rid of things. If a toy breaks I often put it aside to sew, glue etc. hoping I can fix it. We have so many toys, I really probably should just throw it!

I am constantly throwing things out or donating them. I hate having cluttered and stuff hanging around that we don't use. We plan on having a yard sale this summer and it seems that every week I am setting stuff aside for that. Our billing is mostly paperless so we don't have alot of paper junk lying around.

How do you organize your photos?
I print out the photos for the year and put them in an album. The boys love looking at the photos. Although I think I might start just making a photo book every year. Would save on the cost of the album and printing.
