Money Saving Ideas.
HI I'm Corinne and my New Years Goal this year is to get more Organized and Save money. My DF and I are planning to start doing some things once we get our income tax refund to start our Journey on ways to Saving money this year.
Biggest thing we talked about is we need to start Car pooling to work more. We live 30-45 mins from our Jobs so Gas for 2 cars is getting way to expensive. But also our work Schedule is hard to work around because his job won't give him a set schedule. It doesn't have to be an all the time thing but if we can do it as much as we can it will save us quite a bit.
Another thing we were talking about was getting back into coupon use again and shopping sales. Ever since the Holidays came and we started working more my lack of time to keep up with clipping my coupons and sitting down and shopping the best deals failed. I need to get back on that bandwagon like I used to be. I still have a decent stockpile from when I started 3 years ago which I'm still proud to have. It has saved our butts many times plus it's helped out family members in need.
Another thing we need to cut back on Electric usage. The winter is hard for us in our Trailer to do that because the heat in our master bedroom doesn't work (we have propane central heating) so we need to use an electric radiator to keep us and the pipes in our bathroom from freezing. I was thinking of maybe getting a Kerosene heater instead but I'm not all that familiar with them to know if it would be more cost effective. If anyone knows that information please LMK ;) Another thing and this is my DF, we need to start using our Dryer less. He loves to use it to De-wrinkle his work clothes instead of using the iron we do have. I told him that he needs to stop doing that, and when it get's nicer I want to start using a clothes line as much as I can. Not sure how well that will work though because with all the rain we had last year I'm worried the same will happen this year. But I'm going to try. We also already use energy saving light bulbs in every room of the house and only turn the lights on when the sun goes down. SO we already have some things covered. One thing I'm worried about is in the summer with the air conditioners. Anyone have any suggestions with those? We have 3 A/c's one in the living room, kitchen and our bedroom. I much rather use Fans unless it's too hot but DF is one that has to turn it on asap when it starts to get slightly warm.
When we get our tax return we are planning on paying off some bills and also get rid of our storage unit. I have been wanting to do that for some time now but didn't know what to do till now. My plan is to Organize it, sort through everything when spring comes. DF's Mom said we can store what we want to keep at her house so I'm planning on getting some plastic totes from Walmart, I saw a really great deal on 20 gal totes, 6 of them for $25. I want to get a bunch of them and once I fill up enough of them I'll have DF take them to his moms for safe keeping. Once I get everything I want out of there then I can call someone like that Salvation army to take it all. I would love to have a yard sale but with my lack of time and also where I live (in the country) it would be too hard to have one. I would rather give some of it away to people I know would use it or for those who need it more then I do. I also have plans to do all the closets in my house like this. Living in a Mobile Home we don't have allot of space so needing to Declutter is a big plan I have.
Start a Garden. I wanted to do one last year but we need to have a raised Garden bed due to the ground being super rocky. I tried to dig one last year and it was bad with how many rocks there was. Having my own garden would save so much on buying fresh produce. Especially since I had allot of what I bought last year go to waste on us because I didn't get to make it in time. I would rather spend money on seeds and grow it all my self that way I would feel less Guilty if it happened to have gone bad.
Right now these are some Idea's and things I have planned so far, but I'm looking for other ways to save too. If anyone has anything that you do or know someone does please let me know ;D
We rarely use our air conditioning, I just tell hubby it's too expensive and he has to deal. With us we also have an old house with old fashioned casement windows which I feel let too much of the cool air out so I tell him it's a waste of money. We are in the middle of summer and haven't turned them on once and it's been hot. Open windows and use natural air flow as much as possible
Hi Corinne! I think I would be wary about using a kerosene heater in a trailer, but I understand there are some heaters that are far more energy efficient than electric radiators. They are much more expensive, but I guess you save money in the long run.
I would love to have a garden, but I don't have the time or inclination to do the gardening.
We are really hoping to move this year, so my goal is to de-clutter the house as much as possible and get it sold. We have most of our debts paid off. We plan to pay off one of our cars this week, leaving us with just one car payment, one student loan, the mortgage, and a small credit card balance with a very low interest rate. We consolidated our other student loans under income-based repayment, which puts our payments for that to zero, and over the last few months, we have paid off our debt payment plan and a personal loan that we got when our son was hospitalized. So we've essentially reduced monthly debt payments by about $1100! This is such a relief, because I've not been able to work as much since our son has been ill.
Secondly, I grew up in a trailer. Put thick flannel blankets over the window along with the plastic stuff. Do the same in the house, put a blanket in a doorway to keep the heat in the area of the house it's needed. We would also do that in the summer for the A/C.
Thanks! I just found out last night. It was a complete shock since we had been trying and didn't have luck with the previous 3 cycles. But now this gives us so much more incentive to save and be more frugal.
I tried using the plastic on the windows and my cats just scratch it and ruin it :( Which ticked me off but oh well they are cats and want to stare at the window and if they see something out there they want to try and get it. Where did you get your Flannel blankets from? maybe I should look into something like that because the curtains we have aren't cutting it. Or does anyone know of any places with thick curtains but cheap, or know where I can find thick/cheap fabric where I could make some of my own because that would be something easy to make.
I read allot about installing ceiling fans to help with the A/C. We have them all over our house but the one in the living room is missing the chain to turn on the fan part, I need to have someone look at it to see if we can fix that part. I'm just hoping it's not off balance because the one in our bedroom is so off balance we can't even use it. We need a new one in there anyway bc the one that's in there is too small for the room but I think having them will help with our A/C issue.
I would check a Salvation Army or thrift store. Even just a comfortor would be helpful.
This is what our electricity company puts out regarding being "aircon smart" it's supposed to help you save on the costs
You can get plastic that goes on the outside of the windows. That way the cats can't get to it.
