HSG info

Hi all! I'm hoping for some info from those of you who have had an HSG. My Dr. is sending me for one, and I've done a lot of reading about it. But, I'm wondering what the experience is really like, and what to expect that they don't tell you about in the WebMD pages and such! (There's always that stuff that they don't tell you!)

TIA!

It can be a little painful, so make sure you take Aleve about 20 minutes prior to the procedure. They will inject dye through your tubes to make sure there are no blockages, ruptures etc. For some, the cramping is mild. For others, it is very painful. You may have a bit of spotting for a few days afterward. Good luck

HA I have the same test tomorrow morning. I'm a little worried about the pain level too because I don't take pain medication. I'm just hoping it's not too bad because when I have a female exam I usually cramp hard.

OOOk just had this test done.....it actually hurt more than I thought it would. Plus, I'm bleeding just like I'm having a period, plus cramps. BUT that doesn't mean you will have the same experience as I did. Feel like crying because I watched as only one tube showed tube and the poor fellow tried his best to un-block the other tube. I always seem to have the worst luck, but at least I still have a dog in the show.

not to scare you, and everyone's experience is different - but i took 2 or 3 tylanols or whatever they told me to take about 1/2 hr before and it was the WORST pain i have ever experienced. It lasted probably about 5 seconds, but i almost passed out from the pain. I cried the whole way home, and was cramping. I was also told by the nurse lady that it would feel like period cramps...i feel sorry for the women who's period cramps feel like that, cuz if i had to deal with that pain every month i seriously would tell the dr's to cut out my female parts. I was given the option of a higher dose of tylanol, that they could have called in and when i asked what the pain will feel like, that's when she said it'd feel like period cramps. My cramps are totally not bad at all, so i thought, no problem. Clearly, she never had one of these tests.

I have heard from others that it was not that bad and they were totally fine. My tubes were wide open and i had no issues......so, know that it will be uncomfortable once the dye goes in, but it will only last like 5 seconds.....and you will leak and spot.

Christina - I'm sorry your news wasn't all good, but thank goodness for at least one tube being in full working order! I wish you absolutely the best...I hear that the months after the test for really good for getting pg! :goodluck:

yeah that's what they said. A doctor did the test, actually, there were 5 people in there. I thought my cootie had become a clown car. He said that sometimes it helps clean and clear out the tubes. I will find out more by monday when I get back up with the RE nurse/doctor.

I had one done about a month ago, it wasn't too bad for me, def not fun. I would compare it to going to the dentist. I took 800 mg of Ibeprofen about an hour before and I amsure that helped alot. They had me go into a room undress from the wait down and put on a long gown, (I wore long socks to help stay warm). They had me get up on the x-ray table and lay down. They clean you off with some swabs and insert a speculum. They then clean off the entrance to the cervix, which felt like a pap. The worst part was the actual inserting of the tube, it was a sharp kind of jolting sensation. Once it was in though it was ok, not comfortable but didn't hurt once it was in. I did not feel anything different when they inflated the ballon, or ran the dye through. they had me roll from side to side to get the dye to move better. The whole thing was less than 5 min. They took the tube out, which didn't hurt at all. My Dr. went over my films right there. Then that was it. I would def say to bring some babywipes and a pad or panty liner for after. You feel all goopy and gross after and the dye runs out of you all day. It is very sticky which is why the wipes are nice to have. I did have some mild cramping and spotted for a few days. Hope all goes well for you, good luck!!!

Hi Ladies,

Im a lurker. i have been where you all are.

I just wanted to offer some encouragement! i had an HSG done in late Oct/early November. After trying to conceive for over 6 years, i conceived the very next month, on Dec 8 by IUI! the procedure (HSG) hurt like a son of gun, to put it extremel mildly (i swear i was having contractions for 3 hours after), but worth it in the end! Good luck to you and i hope you dont me stopping in and sharing my story!

May I ask why your doctor decided to go straight to IUI? Mine said he wanted to see what the test looked like and probably start clomid for 3 months. But that was said before he knew what my insides looked like lol. I'm also scared that my uterus looks tilted. I am hoping that is just me reading more into it but it didn't look all nice and straight.

Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences and advice. I truly appreciate it!

It is looking like I may possibly have to wait a bit longer than I would like for insurance reasons. But, I'm glad to know what to expect.

Christina - Maybe when your Dr. sees that there is the blockage issue, he may decide that the Clomid is not the right approach? I'm definitely new to this but it would seem like if you are ovulating, but the egg can't get anywhere about half the time, Clomid would not necessarily be useful. :dontknow: I hope you get a good plan for the future on Monday!

Jean

From what the doctor who did the test said and what I saw, one tube is blocked. My husband was just saying this morning that he's scared that one is his sperm will make it up to the blocked tube and we will get a tubal pregnancy. I told him the dye wasn't going through so I don't know how a spermie would hah. Not sure what the doctor will say come monday. He might want to move right on to IUI. I am just going to have to sit here this weekend and hope we catch the egg right now.
