another question for those who have PT

What would you do when you would leave the house when you first started PT? Would you put them in a diaper or just bring a change of clothes? This is one of my biggest reasons we keep delaying PT. We usually go somewhere every morning for 1-2 hours to get the boys out of the house.

I basically stayed in the house for a week Lol It was beyond dull and I was getting cabin fever but I was scared Smile But after I realised he can hold it for about 3 hours unless he's drunk loads I started going out on short trips. Once we were all pretty confident about it all I just went about my normal business. I have NEVER put him in a pull-up to leave the house but I always carry a spare pair of undies and trousers and his potty (it's pretty small so fits easy under the pushchair) And again...he's only had accidents leaving the house when he was ill. It was pretty epic...4 poops and 2 pees in 2 hours Smile But it was just the one time.

We basically stayed put when we were first PTing Bryce as well. Granted, when he was ready and he was PTed, it was not for long and it was not an issue for him to just tell us when he needed to go. We would usually have to make unusual stops on the way somewhere because he would have to go at the worst possible time, but we did what we had to do.

I personally would not recommend putting a diaper on him when you are PTing, I think that would only confuse him.

I still don't know when we will start with Luke. We have a toilet for him, but he has never used it. He will sit on it like he knows what to do, but he doesn't go.

I would put them in a pull up just in case but constantly ask if they have to go potty. Recently I've been going out on a limb and taking DD out in panties... she's only had one accident! Now to just get her through the night without a pull up!

It was a couple days before I ventured out of the house w/ Lily, and only short trips at 1st. I was convinced that she would have all kinds of accidents when we were away from home, but she's done great! She's actually never had an accident when we are away. I don't put a pull-up or anything on her, though I do have a waterproof pad under her on her carseat, and I make sure I have an extra outfit or 2 in the diaper bag for her. And I ask her frequently if she has to go. It is a little annoying sometimes though. The other day we went to Chick-fil-A for dinner and she had to go THREE times in the hour or so we were there.

We are going on our 1st long car ride tomorrow - 1 hr to a friend's house. I'm hoping she makes the drive okay, I'm a little nervous about it!

We went on our first long journey last week. An hour and a half. He went before we left as as soon as we got there. I also hardly let him drink anything Lol

I leave him in undies but always bring 2 changes of clothes. If I know he didn`t poo yet, I put a pull up because he wont`go on the toilet for #2 yet....

Thanks for the replies. We had a HORRIBLE day of pt last friday. It was going great in the morning and he woke up dry after his nap, but then he had THREE accidents within 20 minutes. He would tell me 'don't pee on the floor!' and then he would lay on the floor and pee  At first I was like 'ok, it was just an accident' but then he did it again a couple minutes after I put dry undies on him. Grrrrr. Then he did it on his little trampoline and was wiping it all over. I lost it and put him in a diaper. Ugh, maybe he's not ready...

I think if YOU really want it to work then YOU have to be consistent with it (I mean you general, not you personal :)). I put him in underwear and was 100% sure I wasn't going back no matter how many accidents or how long it took

Have you tried rewards Katie? I found giving him a sticker when he's been meant he was more willing to do it in the right place. And he understood if he made no mistakes then he got a present at the end of the day (a small toy car/train, colouring book, that kind of thing) I also gave chocolate as a reward (I know you shouldn't do that but hey it worked :D)

I don't think there's anything wrong with that on a short term basis. My mom told me I got 1 M&M each time I went on the toilet and I was a breeze to train, apparently. Smile

Katie-I did the same thing with Hayden multiple times. Started, then stopped over and over. I am generally not a patient person when it comes to this sort of thing. But I can say from experience that I will not go that route again. Like Sarah said, do it and make up your mind to stick to it until it's done. It may take a while and you may be pulling your hair out, but it will be worth it. I believe that it's just as important for the parent to be ready as it is for the child because you have to be in the right (encouraging and patient) state of mind and be able to give the necessary time and positive reinforcement to make it work. At least that has been my experience. Try again when YOU feel ready!

Yeah, I wish we wouldn't have given up months ago. We started again today and he did really well. He had 1 accident before bed, but I think that's because he was so into his movie and I forgot to remind him. Tomorrow will be the test though....DH had the day off, so he was able to help me. I'm determined not to go back this time. I just hope he doesn't start acting out and having accidents on purpose. That frustrates me more than anything.
