I'm being outwitted!!!

So, now that my little guy is pretty much using the potty (we're not 100% yet, but we've come a looooong way considering he wasn't using the potty at all a week ago), he is using it to manipulate us.

At bedtime tonight, he got up after lights out and said, "I need to go potty." Well...we don't want to not let him (heck...we've been fighting to get him to want to go!)...but we know he's asking just to get out of bed.

So, we let him sit on the potty for a few minutes. Nothing. Back to bed.

Then he got up again. "I need to go potty." This time I brought the potty to him so that he at least could see that he wasn't going very far. Nothing.

Anyway, finally, I said, "No more. Stay in bed."

So, the little booger purposefully peed in bed so that we would let him get up! "Mommy, I peed in the bed!" And sure enough he did...the smallest amount (enough to have to change his undies but not nearly a regular pee amount). "Oh well, I go to potty."

After the cleanup, we put him back to bed and he finally fell asleep. He was rubbing his eyes when we put him to bed the first time, so I know that he was sleepy.

How do they get so smart? I so hope that this was a one-night thing because, honestly, I'm not sure how to handle it best. Thoughts?

Yup! My 5 year old still pulls this stunt. He will be all ready for bed, tucked in, and 5 minutes later he is up saying he needs to go potty... but usually its just a one time thing and then he stays in bed. We are trying to get in the habit (we forget sometimes) to have him go to the bathroom before he gets into bed, that way there should be no reason why he would have to go to the bathroom again. But, yea, our kids are really smart and experts on outwitting us it seems.

Hunter did that in the beginning of potty training but after telling him no more a couple of nights in a row he stopped.
they are soooooo smart and know how to control us!

Ryken did this when we were offering skittles for going on the potty. He would go a little and then ask for a skittle and then go a little more. I'm waiting for him to do it at bedtime because he tries every other trick in the book!

Geez, Louise! *shaking head*

It just kills me how quick they are to figure out how to get what they want!

LMAO that's too funny! Liberty hasn't done this, thank God, as the potty chair is in our bathroom! I keep her in a pull up at night though, as she keeps peeing in the night then wakes up screaming that her "blankie has pee pee on it!" I don't know what to do about the nighttime episodes...

Yeah, I don't either right now. I'm not putting a pull up on him, but he is having one accident every night. I could wake him up and put him on the potty in the middle, but I hate to start that habit. I also hate to deprive him of drink for 3 hours before bed. Sad

What don't you put a diaper on him at night till he is ready. One accident a night shows he may not be ready to be trained at night? Just a thought..

Yeah, I might do that eventually, but he was in Pampers 100% until 8 days ago...so I'm trying to see if he isn't ready yet or if he just needs a little more time to figure it out. It's all quite a bit for him to learn in just one week. If we go another week, then I'll probably start doing the night time pull-up.

I just put Alexander in a pull-up until he woke up dry and asked to go. It actually only took a week after we started PTing. I didn't even think he would be dry at night now. My brother wasn't dry at night until he was 13!!!!
