There is nothing like new fodder from the "powers that be" to make you feel like you are failing as a parent. IMO, we all suck at it anymore. We move our kids to bigger carseats too early, we feed them processed food, we let them watch secondhand tv or *gasp* actual episodes of Sesame Street or Dora...we are horrible, horrible parents. Okay, I am being sarcastic, but the media sure does what it can to make every parent feel like they are never doing a good enough job causing us all to become neurotic messes under constant pressure to make sure we are doing all the right things. After all, if I say that I did not feel any guilt after reading some of this, I would be lying. I feel guilty about my twins' development every day. I never feel I am good enough as a parent anymore. Maybe it is because I watch TV!!
Anyway, here is an article about it.
Oh, and please note that all of the comments above are in good fun. I take my kids' development seriously, but when you work full-time and you have 3 kids, your time is pretty stretched. Quite honestly, other than my DH watching sports when the kids are downstairs, we rarely have the TV on. My girls have watched maybe 6 total Dora episodes ever. Jake and the Neverland Pirates and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse may have snuck in on occasion when I had to get something done and my girls refused to play, but instead hung on my legs screaming at the top of their lungs. We just don't have time for TV in our house. However, I can never say that we are a TV free house, nor do I think that is realistic for our family. We do try to limit electronic media when we can though. Although, I will admit that my tots have a Sesame Street app for learning to count. Ah, Ah, Ah, let's count 7 cuppy cakes, 7!
