Austin doesn't want to eat... advice??

Ugh, I am at my wits end. Austin was taking five 6oz bottles every 3-4 hours like clockwork. Then, about a week ago he started getting really distracted at almost every feeding. He would act really hungry and start sucking on the nipple pretty rigorously and then slow down, bite down on the nipple, push it to the side of his mouth, etc. We would feed him in a quiet, dark room just to see if big brother or the TV was distracting him, and he still was doing the same things. He has started eating less and less. He will now only eat about 2-3 oz at each feeding. He went from eating 30oz a day to 12oz. I called the pediatrician's office today and spoke to a nurse. She said that as long as he is stil having plenty of wet and poopy diapers and isn't losing weight, not to worry. That's really hard to not worry and wonder what is causing him to not eat. He isn't running a fever, isn't congested... I think he could be teething but would that cause him to not eat? I tried feeding him a bottle before bed and he took it at first and then pushed it to the side, arched his back, and cried. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem? Because he isn't eating well, he also isn't sleeping well. He was up 4 times last night and I am EXHAUSTED. I just don't know what else to do.

I'm sorry! :bighug: Olivia is doing the same thing. She still nurses but keeps pulling off to look around (even in a quiet dark room), then back to the boob for a bit, but not eating like she used to. Then the fun part is she eats like crazy at night and is up every 2 1/2 hours again to eat like a mad woman. She has her 4 month check up on Wednesday so I'm going to ask about it then. Wish I had some advice for us both.

Sounds like it might be teeth, and eating is bothering his mouth. I'd talk to the doc

Super, super common. All 3 of my older kids went through it. It may be teething, he may have a bit of a sore throat, or he may just not need as many calories right now. I know it's really hard not to worry, but babies definitely know when they're hungry Smile If he's wetting diapers, just make sure when he does want to eat, it's available. Smile FWIW, Ben probably only eats about 15oz a day.

My only guess is teething. Hope you find an answer soon. I know that if Tigh were doing this, I'd be worried too. He definitely has become more distracted while eating though.

Thanks for your support, ladies! He actually slept from 9:00 until 4:30 and ate a full bottle then. Not sure what the deal is, but hopefully you are all right and it's teething or a sore throat and is nothing to be concerned about.

Aw, I know it's stressful! Daphne isn't doing exactly the same, but it's a battle with octopus baby arms and a constantly turning head during feedings, so it takes a lot longer to get food in and she can lose interest. Along with the wet dipes, you can just watch that he has tears when he cries as well, lack of both of those could indicate dehydration. But it does sound like he's going thru a little phase that will hopefully pass soon!

This sounds like reverse cycling to me.... Ace is doing this.

He won't take more than 6 ounces while I am at work... but as soon as I get home (and ALL night long) he eats like a mad man. It's normal

I agree with everyone else that Austin could be teething or just not need the extra calories right now. :bighug: Being a mommy is rough!

No clue what it is, either. Smile I am guessing that it means they aren't eating as much during the day but making up for it at night???

I definitely think this is all teething related. I spotted a little white spot on his bottom gums today. I am guessing that's the culprit. I only wish Austin was reverse cycling.. maybe I wouldn't worry so much that way! He will take 6oz in the morning and at night and then 2oz at every other feeding. Plenty of wet diapers so I am sure he is still fine.

Reverse cycling is when they nurse frequently at night and less frequently during the day. Kellymom has a great section on their site...
