Birthday cake

So I am planning on making DS's birthday cake, but wasn't sure what I was going to do or if my baking talents would even match my creative aspirations Smile I was buying some Annie's bunny crackers today when I had a thought that I could use those as decorations. I think I'm going to make the top of my cake into a snow scene with the bunnies on top as little snow bunnies. I got some shredded coconut and think I'll add as some snow dusting on part of the cake (I don't think I would cover the whole cake because not everyone in my family likes coconut). Maybe I can make a snowman out of the coconut? It's all kind of up in the air right now and I just hope I can pull something off so there is something baked and decorated when people show up that they will want to eat Smile

What are you all doing or have done for the birthday cake or cupcakes? Did/Will you have a separate cake just for baby smooshing?

We will have a cake but not one separately for Ryan to destroy - he can wreck the main one. It will be fairly firm (marble cake, almost like a poundcake). We will decorate it in an ocean theme - we have big plans to make little critters out of fondant. I am not sure that will happen, but in any case we will write Happy Birthday Ryan on it and it will have a "1" candle on it.

We are also making these adorable cupcakes I saw on the web. They are fish. The scales, eyes, fins and mouths are smarties.

I think your cakes sounds awesome!!

Good grief. I'm not getting very far with my web searches for "snow bunny cake" ideas. I didn't think I would get eyefuls of scantily clad women along with a few rare images and sites of actual cakes. I have to be careful to read the site descriptions before clicking  Don't think DS is quite old enough for those kind of snow bunnies yet. Guess I just need to search "bunny" without snow and hope I don't get Playboy Blum 3

I think your cake idea is great! And so do the fish cupcakes! We are just doing cupcakes. Her theme is Winter Onederland so just white frosting and then I got some sparkling sugar to match the colors on her invite. I do need to figure out a cake for smashing for her one year pics though.

Winter Onederland - love it! Simplicity may be the ticket as I don't want to be so stressed by getting the cake together that I can't enjoy rest of the day. Maybe I will do just white frosting, coconut sprinkled on some parts and some bunny crackers sitting on top - done.

We bought this cake with their names and happy birthday on it. Jungle Party 1422 | Porto's Bakery

It was SO good!!! My guy liked his slice and my girly put some frosting to her lips.

Elle, here is a cake I found on Pinterest. you could just substitute your bunnies for the snowmen.

I am also doing a winter onederland theme of sorts. Mainly pastel colors and lots of snowflakes. I am planning to make cupcakes with pale pink, blue, and yellow frosting, and dusting of sparkly sugar, and white chocolate snowflakes. Evelyn will just get her own cupcake with a single candle on top. Something like this:

...and I'm also going to try to make these cookies:

A lot of you seem to be making cupcakes...are they easier or are they about the same work as a whole cake? In all honesty, I can't remember the last time I made a cake (maybe my easy-bake oven days). But I do have experience baking muffins so maybe cupcakes would be a better route for me?

Like the snowflake cookies idea...I think the one cookie cutter I own happens to be a snowflake.

Oops, I just realized that my cake photo should have been addressed to you, Christina. Forgive me, I get easily lost in these conversations sometimes.

I am doing cupcakes for several reasons. First, I have never been good at decorating a whole cake. They always seem to turn out crooked and I always struggle with the frosting and writing on top? Forget it. I figure with the cupcakes, I have a much smaller surface to work with so chances of messing up are smaller, plus I have a better chance of having at least some of them turn out really well. Second, I won't have to cut any cake on the day of the party. Everyone can just grab and go. Less work for me. Smile I guess my only worry at this point, is how I will store them until we are ready to eat them. I am planning to make them the day before the party. Guess I'll need to find a big box somewhere!

I'm doing cupcakes because then I don't have to worry about cutting the cake. Claire is a bit of a Mommy clinger in crowds so I fully expect to be holding her for most of her party. I was going to make them myself but DH has a big test this week and won't be around to watch C who now wants to "help" Mommy in the kitchen so I think I'm just going to order them with Plain white frosting from the grocery store and decorate myself.

You have me convinced to make cupcakes instead. They sound like they would be easier to make, decorate and serve.

We ended up just making cupcakes. I will post a pic when I get to it. It was way easier than a cake.
