Bleeding yesterday... so scared! **Update**

Hey girls, (this is a little graphic, to warn you) so on my last trip to the OB she wrote me a prescription for metronidazole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metronidazole) because she said that my pap smear detected that I had some sort of bacterial infection. She didn't explain much else (which was kind of frustrating), just that it wasn't an STD and really nothing to worry about... but that it can cause preterm labor if left untreated. Well, I filled the prescription and started using it on Monday. I'm to use it twice daily, in the morning and before I go to bed. So I did the morning dose with no problems (you have to screw on this tube-like thing and squeeze the medicine in, then insert the tube like a tampon all the way and push in the medicine), and then did it again right before bed. I woke up in the middle of the night with a feeling I was leaking something. I thought it was just the medicine, so I got up to put on some underwear (sorry for the mental image of me sleeping naked, I'm just more comfortable that way!) and went back to bed. When I woke up yesterday morning and went to pee, I noticed brown blood on the tissue when I wiped. I hadn't noticed it in my underwear because they were black. I ran back to my bed and saw a brown blood stain there as well, which was what I was feeling the night before. Now I'm panicking. I call my OB right away and tell them about what's happening, because I've NEVER bled during a pregnancy, not even a little bit, and I've never had a m/c... so to be 14 weeks along with a perfectly healthy baby boy and then take a stupid medication and now I'm bleeding, I'm freaking out and quite honestly a little pissed off. She said just to monitor it, to go ahead and take the next dose as directed, wear a pad, and let her know if it continues. I was so upset, like that's all the info she could give me? Is this a common side effect of this medication, because if so it doesn't say anything about it on the paper that comes with it from the pharmacy?

Anyway, so all day yesterday I still had brown "pieces" of old blood (the best way I can describe it?) on the tissue when I wiped. I took the medicine again last night and had no more bleeding this morning, thank God. It just really freaked me out. She called me this morning to check up on me and I told her that I had no more bleeding, and she put me on pelvic rest, which is a polite way of saying I can't have sex until my next appt, which isn't until 6/24!! Come on... first you give me some crappy medication that makes me bleed, then you don't give me any clear answers as to how this could have happened, then you tell me I can't have sex? I'm so frustrated right now. Have any of you had to take this medicine before, and if so, did something like this happen to you?

**Update**
I stopped bleeding thankfully, but still had "stuff" coming out (again, sorry that this is graphic), it's like little pieces of dried blood but in little clumps up until yesterday afternoon? I don't know, but yesterday when I got home from work and laid down for a minute I had about 30 seconds worth of horrible cramping, like so bad that I cried out. DH was pretty freaked out, but of course my OB was closed already, but it only happened that one time. I think I'm most upset because I had absolutely no symptoms at all (apparently you have itching, redness, discomfort?) and even when I told them about the bleeding they told me to continue using it. I swear every time I do I want to cry because I think it's hurting my son. Thankfully I only have through tomorrow night until the dosage is done, but still... I'm going to call my OB office this morning and tell them about the cramping. I'll keep you guys posted...

Ugh, sounds awful. I haven't had this before, but this could just be signs of your body expelling the bad bacteria. I would up my doses of probiotics... Drinks, Yogurt anything with probiotics. Can only help to get that good bacteria in there to fight off the bad bacteria!!! Hope you are better asap!

I've never heard of it but I would assume it could be the applicator causing irritation to your cervix, in turn causing the blood. Not saying I wouldn't be worried about it too - I probably would be, but at the same time I just always expect bleeding when anything enters that area (which is exactly why DH and I haven't DTD yet b/c I am too scared).

Hopefully it stops on its own soon.

You may have just got up there too high and hit your cervix and that caused the bleeding.

Glad its stopped though. :bighug:

I would be very scared and upset about the bleeding too but just to let you know as a pharmacist its the not the medication itself. I agree that it is most likely due to irritation to the cervix from the applicator. The medication doesn't have to be deposited that far in to still work so just don't insert the applicator in all the way from now on. You may have a little more leakage of the gel but thats not a big deal.

This is what I was going to say as well. I bet it is just irritation on your cervix from the applicator. It is sensitive in there now. (((hugs))) and try not to worry too much.

Aww, that sounds so scary! I'm sure baby is ok. I agree that it sounds like your cervix is irritated. I had some bleeding followed by spotting as well, after I got a pap test.

I really don't think it's the applicator, as it's thinner than a tampon and (warning if reading ahead!) DH and I can have some pretty crazy sex sometimes, even pregnant (sorry!!) and I can guarantee he goes deeper in than this applicator does... and I've never bled afterwards... ever. This is why I was so scared/frustrated with all of this. The applicator is thin and smooth, designed to go in easily to administer the medicine. I've actually used this same medicine a couple of years back (I hadn't remembered until I was about to use it for the first time Monday and I recalled doing the same exact thing in the past) and I never bled before then either. I'm still so confused...

Becky, have you ever had someone come back to you (as a pharmacist) and complain about bleeding with this medication?

But also I'm guessing your husband isn't made of hard plastic? Just a thought.

Wow, that must have been scary and I would have been pissed too. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about and everything will clear up.

That must have been so scary. It's so frightening to see any blood when you're pregnant.

A friend of mine who is due the end of October had this exact same thing happen to her. She went in for her 12 week appointment, the doctor did a pap, and found out she had a little bit of a bladder infection. She wasn't really having any symptoms, except for peeing more frequently. Her doctor told her to pick up some Monistat (pretty sure it was Monistat) and follow the dosage guidelines on there. So, she did that, and about an hour after doing the first dose she felt really "wet" down there. She went into the bathroom to find lots of blood. Needless to say, she freaked out, called her doctor, her doctor wouldn't even do an u/s to ease her mind. She ended up not doing any more doses since she wasn't feeling symptoms anyways (the peeing more frequently could have just been because she was pregnant). She is now 18 weeks and everything is going well.

She did google this, and it seems like lots of women have this issue after using something like that.

If you are still worried, and the doc doesn't want to do anythign, you can always go tothe ER and tell them you are bleeding. They should be able to do an U/S there.

How is it today?

GL at the appointment! KUP how it goes. I think it must just be the cervix agitated, anything can really agitate it at this point in the game. I get the same symptoms everytime I DTD. You also have to think, the applicator goes straight up there and is probably alot more rough than your hubby. I agree with pp that it must be that. Or maybe that's just how your cervix responds to the med? IDK, but I definatly hope all is well with the tot in there. GL!!!

Good luck with your appointment today. If I were in your shoes, I would just be done with the medicine. You said you aren't having any symptoms.

I told the nurse when I called to make the appt today that I'm not going to take the medication anymore... I don't care about the stupid "supposed" infection... my son is more important than anything at this point.
