Cervix Check

How are cervix checks this insanely painful? I might die of pain before I ever go into labor. Same crap as last week. Same exact 2 cm and 50%. Same exact up-all-night moaning and writhing. I don't ever want to be checked again and I sure as hell don't ever want to be knocked up again.

**HUGS** Is the pain vaginal or is it causing abdominal pain? I'm sorry that this has been so difficult for you. When you go in on Tuesday I think I would refuse the cervical check. Just let the know how painful it is for you and that you don't want to go through that again for no reason.

:lurk:

I have been looking into this, as I've had a few "necessary" (or so they said) ones done recently and wished I had passed out from the pain. From what I understand, they tell you nothing about when labour may start, so I've decided to refuse them outright. Is that an option for you?

Ok, so please tell the ignorant FTM what is involved with a cervix check!? I was thinking that they just use a speculum to look at your cervix, but from everyone's description, I'm guessing there's more involved. Please let me know. I know my midwife told me last time that they don't really do them unless you request them or they see some other need for it.

They don't use a speculum at least they haven't for me. The doc or MW uses two fingers to reach to feel the cervix. They check for dilation and effacement. I imagine it's the effacement that hurts to check and if baby is up high it might feel like they stick the whole arm in there.

My cervical checks are just uncomfortable. So it just may differ from person to person.

If I remember right they basically fist you, but say they are using their fingers....

Yup. And then they jam their fingers up into your cervix to see how thick it is. It cannot be described without an infinite number of swear words. I cleaned this up, but just imagine an f-word between each regular word.

OMG, you guys crack me up! I think I won't be asking for any checks then, thanks! Smile

YES! However, when you are in labor and almost complete you will welcome the checks in order to get someone to let you push. LOL

Sorry it hurt - I remember them being uncomfortable with DS too. I was hoping to be checked Monday at my appt. I know I am still early but with all the contractions I have had this week I feel like something has to be happening.

That's the funniest freaking thing I have ever read!!! LMAO Nothing beats me being induced in the hospital and the resident saying "I can't find your cervix to place the Cervadil" so she proceeds to jump up onto my bed as she is sticking what felt like her whole entire arm into my vagina to find my runaway cervix.

Oh no, the mental image of this is just too funny...and extremely frightnening. I can remember watching an episode of Baby Story or some other show (I can't remember which one) and someone jumped up on the bed and started trying to push the baby out from the outside by pushing on the woman's stomach. I was like, "Oh hell no! No one is ever doing that to me!"

Yeah, this baby having stuff is horrifying.

Nobody would ever try and push my baby from the outside either. Gross and not to mention who knows what you're doing to my poor baby!!

I feel like I probably have a chance of experiencing that if baby B goes vaginally. Also possible: (YAY!) manual extraction.

Wow Sheila, it sounds like you have a pretty violent OB! I don't know, maybe everyone is different. Whenever my OB checks me there's no discomfort at all, she just uses her fingers. The only time I've ever found it painful to have a cervical check is when I'm actually in labor and haven't had an epi... then it hurts like hell. I'm sorry it's so painful for you...

The only time I ever had a cervical check hurt was when they induced and were trying to place the Cervadil. I agree that your OB must be rough. He (?) must not know how fragile a vagina is when it has all kinds of baby pressing down on it.

I guess so. I have nothing to compare it to since the same OB did it twice. It's not the actual check that hurts so much (but that does SUCK), it's the hours afterwards that hurt.

Yikes!!! I did t realize they hurt so much, I'm sorry you had to go through that!!

I don't think I'm getting any until I'm in labour or really overdue or something. Now I think I am totally okay with that :o

I think mine hurt last week because he said the baby was really high up there. He had to push on the top of my belly. It made my whole back spasm. I was laughing because it felt like he shoved his whole arm to my throat. He said "sorry", that made me laugh also. Really, have you had someone do that to you Dr???? Anyway it was worth it in my opinion. I wanted to know how I had or had not progressed. But I can totally understand if you told them no. And I totally agree with Carolyn, when you are in labor, especially if they check you during a contraction it hurts like hell!!!!! Serious, not gonna sugar coat it!
