Now that our babies are approaching 9 months I thought it would be nice to have a little check in.
Baby's age: 8 month 1 Week
Height: 67 cm
What can your baby do? Sits unassisted (even though we still have some spills now and then), tells us stories in baby babble, has the pincer grab down, imitates us sometimes when we make noises or stick out our tongue, turns from back to tummy and back, no crawling yet but very soon, pulls up on furniture but not quite strong enough to get up.
What is your baby eating? Mostly breastmilk still - he rejects my left boob completely so I pump that side and use it for my freezer stash or to top up with a bottle now and then. We have 2 meals a day (lunch and dinner) where he eats about 0-2 ounces of solids each. Chunks of whatever we eat works better than purees which he mostly rejects. His fave so far is greek chicken from the slow cooker. Some days he still won't eat any solids.
How is baby sleeping? Still nurses 2 times per night. He has never slept through the night... sigh. One day, right? He has mostly 2 naps per day now from previously 3. He is still a catnapper - 30-45 minutes each nap that's it.
Anything else you would like to add? Now that Ryan can sit he seems a lot more content and can entertain himself for 20-30 minutes with minimal help from our side. It's a godsend! He is really starting to develop a sense of humor and we absolutely love playing with him. Hes a real goofball!
Are you planning the next one already? No way!! Now that things are finally starting to get easier I am enjoying getting out of the newborn stage and life going back to normal a bit more. Maybe in a year or two ;)
Baby's age: 8 months 2 Weeks
Height: ? I'd have to go look and I'm lazy ;)
Weight: 18.5 lbs
What can your baby do? sits up, crawls, pulls self up around furniture, waves, "so big", pincer grasp, uses sippy cup. Can get around in the walker FAST (she is hilarious to watch!). She is also getting good at ruining her big brother's train tracks.
What is your baby eating? breastmilk. Breakfast she usually has a small bowl of gerber oatmeal, a few bites of toast, and some cheerios. Lunch she usually has something of whatever we're having with whatever puree she probably won't eat (lol), a fav is spiral mac 'n cheese. Dinner she usually has cooked carrots with whatever else we're having.
How is baby sleeping? Morning nap is about 45 minutes. Afternoon nap is about 1.5 hours. She goes down at night around 8pm...wakes every 3 hours to nurse...is up in the morning around 8am.
Anything else you would like to add? She's kind of high maintenance. lol. She loves me to hold her. She doesn't let others hold her if I'm in sight, but if I hide out she will let a few select people hold her (grandmas, auntie).
Are you planning the next one already? I think about it, but I know I could never handle another right now. We're totally undecided if we're going to have a 3rd...we'll probably make a decision in about a year. I hope Vivi is STTN then. :D
Baby's age: 9 months
Height: 26 inches
Weight: 14 lbs 4 ounces
What can your baby do? he sits, pulls up, crawls, stays up all night, eats wayyyyy too much to only be 14 lbs, babbles all the time
What is your baby eating? He nurses anytime he wants, he eats fruit/cereal for breakfast, 1-2 jars of baby food for lunch and 1-2 jars for dinner. He also has 4 ounces prune juice/4 ounces water a day for constipation as well as 4 ounces of sugar water a day for constipation. he has tried pancakes, crackers, grilled cheese, cheese by itself and most fruits/veggies
How is baby sleeping? He wakes up ever 1.5-2 hours most nights. I am lucky if he goes 4 hours.
Anything else you would like to add?
Are you planning the next one already? No, we are finished with pregnancy and new babies.
Babies' ages: 8.5 months
Heights: I don't know
Weight:I have no idea but he's been consistently in the 15th %-ile and she follows a sad little curve well below the 3rd %-ile.
What can your baby do? They're both sitting and getting themselves into all sorts of different positions. My boy has a quick army crawl that ends in all sorts of badness if he isn't contained in the massive baby jail. My girly has no interest in crawling but she spends her entire day practicing standing up and sitting down, holding onto anything she can find -- usually her brother.
What is your baby eating? UGH. This is such an issue. My girly still won't take formula and I absolutely regret breastfeeding. She also won't touch food of any sort - we've obviously tried all sorts of textures and flavors and sizes over the past few months. She gets only breastmilk and it's KILLING me. My son nurses maybe 8 times a day or so but he has added in big meals, too. He typically gets 3 oz of cereal and 4 oz of fruit for breakfast, some cut up veggies or sometimes fruit or puffs for lunch, and 8 oz of veggies for dinner.
How is baby sleeping? It's not that hard to put my son down to bed at night usually, sometimes he's a wiggle monster though and I have to lie in bed with him. He actually usually cry/whines for 5 minutes when I put him down but he falls asleep so I have just been letting it happen while I deal with his sister. If I get him to sleep in his crib it only lasts a couple of hours. He spends the rest of the time in bed with me and nurses 3 times at night usually. I hated building walls of pillows around him and worrying about him while I got up with his sister, so I moved a mattress to the floor and now that's his bed. An 8 month old with his own queen sized mattress. I actually often give up even trying to put him in the crib and just put him on the mattress on the floor instead. If he falls off, big deal, it's a few inches. My daughter is a bad sleeper. It takes ages to get her to knock out and we have to use the swing to put her to bed at night. She gets up twice to eat, meaning I still have to pump twice in the night. I never was able to get ahead. We're the furthest thing from sleeping through the night here. Huh, I'm just adding that up here. Yup, that's 3 nursing sessions, 2 bottles, and 2 pumping sessions between midnight and 6am. Sweet.
Anything else you would like to add? Continue having babies one of a time, ladies!
Are you planning the next one already? No way!! Never ever. Holy crap, no. This year is moving waaaaaay too slow and I can't wait for it to be over with already.
Only 4 of us still sticking around?? Come on out of the woodwork ladies!!
Well on the one hand I am glad to hear I'm not the only one still getting up multiple times per night to nurse. So many people keep telling me that their babies slept through the night long before Ryan's age, it's frustrating! On the other hand sorry - you must all be pretty tired!!! Sheila your schedule makes me tired just reading it.
Ashley, Ryan is sort of high maintenance too still. If I don't pick him up all the time he whines. He will play on the floor if I'm sitting RIGHT THERE. Thanks for the new pic, Vivi is adorable!!
Angie, glad to hear Luke is such a good eater!
Baby's age: 8 month & some odd days
Height: no clue now, was 25 inches at last appt (6 months) & we don't go in again until September
Weight: sadly this I don't no either, was 17lbs 11oz two months ago
What can your baby do? Sits unsupported; not crawling yet but gets up on hands & knees; his main mode of mobility is rolling, squirming & pushing himself backwards with his arms; can still scream with the best of them (is there such a thing as a baby-induced hearing loss?) - plus makes it hard to tell when DS is actually hurt or in true distress - "Shreeek (I'm don't want to be on the floor anymore)" & "Shreeek (I just pooped)"
What is your baby eating? Breastfeeds (or bottle if I'm at work work) about 6x/day. Solids meals 3x/day - haven't really tracked how much, I've just been adding more gradually as needed. Mostly purees with some added chopped up grains or cereals. I don't like cooking meat so I did get some jarred meat purees so DS could try those
How is baby sleeping? We went down to two naps recently which was rough at first but I think better now since he will now sleep for longer span for at least one of those naps. I've been ill the past week (think flu) so I've been trying to take advantage and sleep then. Sleep at night varies. Goes down around 6:30pm, wakes up again usually around 10/10:30 to be fed, then from there it is a crap shoot. Sometimes he'll stir again around 1am but will usually go back to sleep <10 minutes. Then from 5am on he will awaken at some point again. I try to see if he can soothe himself in 10min, if so great I might get extra hour otherwise I try to calm him down. I was told two months ago by my HCP that I kept getting sick because I wasn't getting enough sleep back when he was night feeding more frequently. Her remedy was to get more sleep (and some antibiotics) - at the time was like ha what an enlightened idea, I'll get right on that (sarcasm here). However little by little we weaned some night feedings (had many long crying, I mean, shriek bouts from DS) and here we are but I'm still getting sick and other breast issues.
Anything else you would like to add? Still screams quite a bit but thankfully not as much in public like he used to. It's like he puts on his cute baby face when we are out and people say "He screams? I don't believe you." But when we get home it's a different story. At least close family knows the truth. Breastfeeding is going well, I guess. DS is happy to nurse sometimes I can't get my boob out fast enough for him ("shreeek!") but doesn't turn his nose up to a bottle of milk or hypoallergenic formula if I don't have enough pumped saved. However, breastfeeding does not seem to like me all the time. I develop plugged ducts frequently which often turn into hard masses I have to massage/nurse/pump down. At least four times I've had mastitis (maybe five though I'm crossing fingers that this current episode is the flu since I've been throwing up). My fever won't stay below 101 for more than couple of hours and has gone up to 104 range the past two times I've been sick including now. I just feel like death baked in a hot oven and DH is really clueless though we have been in similar situations before. He thinks if I get up off the couch & drag my butt to the kitchen for water it's a sign I'm getting better. I've asked him to help with a couple of things and only a few are getting done. Plan to go to doctor Monday if this has not resolved (the illness not my marital issues, lol) Sorry for the vent. I could probably shoot hot darts at DH right since my eyes feel like they are on fire though he did just get me some fresh water so I can take some tylenol so I'll spare his life for now. Plus he should probably be around to care for DS in case this kills me.
Are you planning the next one already? Ummm let me think...heck no. I have a fever but definately not baby fever. This baby stage is lasting too long for my physical & mental health. There have been some high points sure but it is hard to see positive right now when I'm burning like a furnace. Just waiting for my fever to break a little so I can sleep.
It was nice to read the updates. Sorry for those having a rough go of it. Hopefully, we can at least check in from time to time like this
Oh Christina that sounds rough!! I'm sorry you area having such a hard time with recurring mastitis and sickness. I was actually thinking of weaning recently as I've been on full dose domperidone for 6 month now and wanting to quit the medication. as soon as I stop taking it my milk supply pretty well dries up within 2 days. So I tried the hypoallergenic formula again mixed with breast milk and Ryan WILL not take it. Sigh. Have you considered weaning? I know breast is best but at some point especially when babies are on solids I think there is really no harm (not that I think formula feeding does harm at all) doing things to promote your own health again...
Sorry Ryan does not like the hypoallergenic formula. What brands and formulations (powder, liquid) have you tried? When I first smelled the Similac version I thought no baby in his or her right mind would want to drink that stuff - it smells like old stinky nacho cheese and this coming from someone who loved eating all kinds of cheese before I cut it out. Surprisingly, DS took it just fine when he got his first taste several months ago. We use the powder because it lasts longer for our current needs. However, I have heard of some babies only liking the ready mixed liquid, etc. Though you've probably tried everything you could, what ratio of milk to formula have you tried? It might sound crazy but maybe trying very minute formula amounts so that all he tastes is milk and very, very gradually increasing the formula might help him adapt. But you probably want something faster if you want to get off the medication soon.

Earth Mama Angel Baby makes a No More Milk Tea to help with engorgement while weaning but don't know anyone who has used it. I think my mastitis flare ups are a combination of feeling run down by my work and stay at home schedule. I'm home with DS during the week and then usually do a weekend shift at one of two hospitals (or both if staffing is desparate for more help). I don't always have time to pump when I need so that usually paves the way for trouble later on. Good news is that I'm ending my employment later this month at one of the hospitals so hopefully that will free up some weekend time for family and rest.
Ugh, sorry about the mastitis. I'm on round 10 and it sucks *** so hard and definitely makes babies the worst. I can't wait for the OK on cow's milk.
Baby's age: 8.5ish months
Height: I don't know haha! She's on the short side. 26ish inches?
Weight: I don't know either, lol oh dear! She's big. 20ish pounds
What can your baby do? Sits totally unassisted and can get from lying to sitting and vice versa no problem. Crawls properly now, but sometimes reverts to army-style crawling to go faster haha. Pulls to standing on everything and then manages to take a few steps - it is freaking me out! Loves to "walk" holding your hands. She claps and waves, has a few sounds that I think mean something (like "daa!!" for our cat Digger), and is getting into everything in general.
What is your baby eating? Mostly breastmilk. She is welcome to eat whatever we are eating but she doesn't always show interest. She loves fruit and Cheerios, not really into veggies or meat. Sometimes she shows huge interest in foods I would never think she'd like, like spinach and artichoke cheese dip or beef chili.
How is baby sleeping? Still bedsharing. She nurses during the night but I don't wake up so I don't know how often. She has some bad nights every now and then due to teething. Her naps are all over the place, sometimes she doesn't nap at all and then like today, she's going on 2+ hours for her nap at the moment.
Anything else you would like to add? She has EIGHT teeth!!! It's crazy. She got six pretty much all at once after her first two came in at four months. She has a big personality and is so sweet. She has lots of smiles for everyone. I love her curiosity and she loves the outdoors, which has made for a fun summer. We are going to try camping in a week or two! As for me I have been working through PTSD and anxiety after my traumatic delivery. I have made a lot of strides recently in my recovery and I am feeling much better :)
Are you planning the next one already? Ummm. Ask me in about a week and a half..........yikes!!!!! DH and I had a little accident a few days ago and I am in the 2WW. Oh man. We aren't officially trying until E is at least 2.
