Elaina update & mini pill question

So yesterday was her four week checkup. It went so well! She is gaining a lot, averaging 1.5oz per day. At her 2 week checkup she was 9lbs 1oz, now she is 10 lbs 8oz!!! She also had a hearing test with an audiologist in the morning. It was a really involved test lasting two hours because she failed two different hearing screens in the hospital. Luckily it all came out great and she hears perfectly in both ears. We also had a quick checkup with our GP so he could meet her, since he will take over her care after our final midwife checkup at 6 weeks. Lots of appointments, but she held up well Smile

Also, at my midwife appointment I was advised to go back on my pain meds (600mg ibuprofen and 2 extra strength Tylenol every 4-6 hours) and slow down AGAIN. I am so FED UP with my recovery!!!!!! I know I had awful tears (3rd degree ones as I found out) plus an episiotomy. But I thought I would be much better now. She took a look at things and healing is going very well but there are some spots that are irritated just from over exertion and that is why I have been feeling an increase in pain again. I am sick and tired of having to sit around and be n so much pain and relying on pain meds. I also got a prescription for the mini pill (as if I will ever be ready for THAT again.......!!) anyone else taking it or taken it before? Do you like it? I probably won't start it for a few more weeks yet.

I don't mean to worry you, but definitely keep an eye on her hearing. I'm so glad your doctors are being proactive and sent her to an audiologist. I see so many doctors in our area just brush parents off when they express concern about a child's hearing and the initial screenings that are given are not very reliable. We sometimes have to fight to get children in our program seen by an audiologist and so much of child development is dependent on an infant's ability to see and hear. Anyway, what I am trying to say is that if you ever have any doubt about her ability to hear, don't let your doctors tell you she's fine. Trust your gut and seek a second opinion. But it sounds like everything is great!!

I'm sorry you're having such a rough recovery. I also had an episiotomy and 3rd degree tearing, and the first week or two was definitely really hard for me and I still have trouble going to the bathroom every now and then and I end up resuming the Colace. When I left the hospital they told me to soak in a warm bath 3-4 times a day. Now, let me ask you, how many of us have time to do that!!?!? I barely had enough time to soak twice a day while I was in the hospital. Anyway, you probably hate to hear this, but listen to your doctor and take it easy. I don't know if I'd go crazy with the pain meds. Are you having a lot of pain still? Hope you're feeling better soon.

I also would like to hear others' experience with the pill. After 6 years of TTC, I told myself I would never go back on the pill again, but now it is seeming like the best option. I don't know though, maybe they will advise me to try something else since I am over 30??

So glad she passed her hearing test! I'm sorry you're having such a rough recovery. Sad I don't have any advice on the mini-pill. I actually decided at my 6 wk appt to go on that...went to pick it up at the pharmacy, and ended up not getting it. $79 (for 3 months) but when I told my dh it basically just dries you up so sperm can't get in he wasn't very fond of the idea of having to use lube all the time, LOL.

I was on the minipill with Nicholas. It was fine but I did have a slight decrease in my breastmilk supply; however that might be related to me going back to work around the same time too. I wouldn't go on it until you think you might be having sex again. I am going on the minipill at 6 weeks and staying on it until DH has been cleared with his vasectomy.

I'm glad to hear Everything is well with Elaina. Sorry you are still in pain but you should listen to the doctor and rest. Enjoy this time and snuggle with Elaina they grow so fast.... I'm still taking colace everyday. I probably should be drinking more water too.

What a good little eater she is! I agree with what Carrie said about her hearing test... I've never had a baby fail a hearing test before, and if I did I would definitely seek out a second opinion. I started the mini pill about two weeks ago and it's fine (I guess that's all you can really say about BC lol), I've never had any problems with it, and I've been on it before with DD when I was BF her. My doc said that I have to wait a month for it to kick in before we can have unprotected sex, although I know another girl who's doc told her just two weeks (but I'll wait the month to be safe lol)!!!

Good growing Elaina!! Glad her hearing test was okay.

I was on the mini pill w/DS and never noticed any side effects or issues. I have some now but decided not to take it, we will use condoms for now. Since the doc fixed my fallopian tube during my c-section I want to wait and see what my cycle does before I mess with it again. I would like to go off bc and just chart/family plan.

Thanks everyone! I will keep a close eye on her hearing, that is a good point. In the hospital the first screen was done the day after she was born and she failed that, but they said she still had a lot of fluid in her ears from delivery so that could be why. The second one was done a few days later and was more involved, she passed that one in her right ear but her left ear didn't hear the entire range of sounds, so she failed that one and required the actual test. I will pay attention to her anyway and see how she does, maybe I can get a repeat test done when she's older or something.

Carrie, I was told 3-4 baths a day too! Yeah right. Initially I was able to get at least one and sometimes two a day when DH was home. Lately not so much though, but I sometimes try to get one in the evening when he's off work. As for pain, I am still having quite a lot. The episiotomy doesn't seem too bad, it's the tears that are especially painful. I am back on my meds and it's helping, at least.

Way to grow elaina!! And so glad she passed the hearing test! You must have been worried.

I am so sorry to hear about the pain. I had an episiotomy and a tear but it was internal and the tear really didn't hurt much. I still have a tiny sore spot. I know you're frustrated about having to take it easy but the less you move around the better it will heal. If you don't have time for the bath (who does??) try putting Epsom salts in the peri bottle and spray down every time you use the bathroom. Also, when my episiotomy still had "open" sore spots I would take my pants off and just sit in bed under the covers to let things air out. Fresh air is good for wounds! Lastly, try wearing really loose underwear and pants. My underwear and pads were rubbing against the wound irritating it, leading to increased pain after 3 weeks. I also have a little bit of an infection around a stitch that I put polysporn on. Hang in there!!

These are great suggestions, thank you!!! I am going to try the salt on the peri bottle and try to air out more. I did find some improvement when I was finally able to switch from a huge pad to a liner.
