    Default gender test

Just saw on CNN that they have developed a new gender test that can be done at 7 weeks. Crazy that is.

The blood tests are usually given to women who either have a relative or they themselves know they carry a genetic defect that could be transferred to their babies.
My friend had it done when she was 7 or 8 weeks (4 years ago) and knew right away it was a boy. She told me I should ask my OB to do the test too. However, I seriously doubt he would have done it just so I could know the gender. I wonder if more people will have it done after reading or seeing this? Will OBs offer it more freely?

This is what I was thinking and just came across it:

Because of the ease of the blood test, and the earlier window for sex determination, some medical ethicists feel the test makes it easier for parents to abort a child because of its sex.

Jenn that was my first thought as well! I wonder how many people will elect to get abortions simply because of the sex of the baby. Sad but such a true reality. Especially in places like China where aborting/abandoning baby girls is so prevalent because of their 1 child per family limit.

If you read the comments people are saying the same thing.

My mom had text me about this last night - the blood gender test. I didn't realize they were saying it was a new thing. I assumed that since my friend/coworker had it done years ago that it had been around a while.

I saw that on CNN this morning too. My DH's reaction was "One day they are going to have a pregnancy test that you just pee on and it will tell you the gender."

They have actually stopped doing this there. And I don't believe there is a one child limit anymore either.

The country started to realize that they cannot sustain the population of Chinese w/ all boys. lol. DUH!!!! They are now actually very concerned w/ not having enough women to populate the next generation.

It's still a policy over there, but its supposedly being re-examined and *might* be overturned or become less strict in 2015. You have to pay a large fee to the government if you want to opt out and have more kids. I only know this because I have I know a girl who is a first generation Chinese American. You have to have a lot of money, and there's other limitations as well such as the parent's have to be from 1 child families, or if your first child is a girl or mentally/physically handicappedl you can appeal to have a second one. There are 13 million abortions a year in China, which is about 35,000 a day. The USA "only" does about 6,500 a day.

The girl I'm friends with also said if a family has a girl they will essentially be poor forever because of the tremendous dowry that has to be supplied. She was shocked that I'm from a family of 5 kids. She was like "wow,,, your family must be extremely rich!"

It's crazy to me that someone might abort because of the gender of the baby, but women do do this... and sadly even as late as 18 weeks when they have their first U/S and know for sure. And I'm not just talking about China, it happens here, too.

I couldn't agree more Carolyn!! I couldn't imagine living in a place where you had to pay to have more than one child and where such personal decisions are taken away from you. It makes me glad to be free as well.
