    Default Gestational Diabetes Support Thread

I thought this would be helpful since there seems to be a few of us who have it. We can use it for tips, recipes or just supportive chatter .

Great idea Angie - we should "stick" this...I'll ask someone to do that for us.

I was supposed to start testing today, but my insurance has decided it doesn't have my meter and strips ( from my last pregnancy) on their preferred list. That means the strips will be 50.00 a month. No.Way. So, I have to wait on my dr to call in something else.

I had 2 strips left over. I wonder if they expire? Well, I tested fasting this morning and it was 111. *gasp*. I always had the worst trouble with my fasting number. I tried everything for snacks at bedtime to help. Finally I figured that for some reason popcorn, plain or with a seasoning type flavor worked perfect for me. I am going to have some again tonight and see if that works again.

My 2 hour after breakfast number was 91. They want it under 120. I had eggs, cheese and mushrooms to eat.

Now I just have to wait for more strips to test again. :/

    Great idea thread!!

I just got home from seeing the nutritionist and I don't have to check back in during my pregnancy, just be monitored by my doc!! They said all of my blood sugar checks for the last 8 days have been great and they are going to recommend to my doctor that I check my fasting and my 2 hours after dinner blood sugars. YAY! Less sticking!

    Thanks for the thread!

I'm still waiting on my nutritionist referral. They are going to give me the monitor and tell me where to buy the test strips. I am trying to write down what I am eating to see if what I am doing is ok when I go visit him/her.

A mom that had gestational diabetes told me that what helped her the most with her sugars after meals was drinking some water with fresh lemon squeezed into it. I am going to have to see if this works!

Sorry about your fasting number Angie. I would say that the test strips don't expire though.

Crissy- congrats on only having to test 2x day!!!

OK I'm blowing this thread up, but tomorrow I am going to a baby shower at work and it's going to be so sad not eating any cake or drinking punch

My appointment at the diabetes center is on Monday, so I guess we'll see what happens. I'm hoping I can test for a few days and then be kind of let off the hook.

Congrats Crissy on good levels and not having to check in!!!

Angela, I know how you feel. I have a bridal shower to go to on Saturday, but I guess I'm already used to passing on the cake.

Passing on cake is hard! My sisters 18th birthday is this weekend and I have to pass on cake for that. boo.

My fasting number was 97 today. Glah. That was always the hardest one for me with my dd. I'll get it, I just have to find the right evening snack again.

Angie- what should your fasting number be? I was 91 when I went in for the 3 hour test.

First a question: The dr's office called today and said I was being referred to an endocrinologist????? Does this mean I need to have insulin? I thought I was supposed to be referred to a dietician. The appt is for next wed at 1pm- a very inconvenient time as far as work goes because I will have to take a 1/2 day. I am going to call tomorrow and try to get a different time and ask what is going to happen at the appointment.

Today was a baby shower. I think I did well considering all of the food was not very GD friendly at all. I had a SMALL bite of cake (1'' by 1'' by 1'') and some apples. I also had some nuts in my purse for protein so I ate those to help balance the sugar. OH and diet coke instead of punch.

This morning for breakfast I ate a hard boiled egg and a piece of toast (whole grain 10 carbs) with peanut butter. It was so yummy. I think this is my new favorite breakfast for the time being. Oh and water to drink.
