HCG Diet

Anyone heard of this? I think it's crazy that people are using the HCG hormone to lose weight. If this is the case then why don't we get skinnier when we're pregnant? LOL

I have a friend who has been doing this and advertising it all over facebook. I think it's ludicrous! Especially since this is a person who was trying to get pregnant. Don't you think if you are taking a pregnancy hormone that your body will already think you are pregnant?! What is boils down to is that you don't eat. I think she consumes something like 500 calories a day. This diet seems dangerously unhealthy to me.

Oh yeah it seems absolutely ridiculous but I think it would work wonders! I started out chubs and I'm only now back to my pre-pregnancy weight at 22 weeks with twins ... I can definitely see how the diet could work for some people!

Obviously if there was a quick cheap way to lose weight we would not have a problem with obesity in this country.
Why don't people understand this?

I think it's crazy too! I had only just heard about it and began reading up on it. I think it's insane but to each their own.

I worked with a girl that was doing that diet. I heard really bad things about it, so it freaked me out. And she never really lost any weight anyway.

I find it rather strange.....maybe it makes your body think you are in the 1st tri so you throw everything up???? I would be afraid it would make my cycles wacky.

I heard of it when I first got pregnant, and I personally think it's gross. Essentially you're drinking a pregnant woman's urine to lose weight? How about knocking your crap off, eating right, and getting to the gym like the rest of us have to do to lose weight?!

Hmmm....after reading the posts I guess I shouldn't admit that I tried it. My mom and SIL did it and lost 30 in a month and tried to convince me to do it too. I said all the things you guys are saying and thought it was horrible for them to even try. However, when I couldn't get my last 5 lbs (out of 65, ugh) off I gave in and tried it. I started a journal and wrote down everything I was feeling each day and how much I had lost. I think I lasted maybe 4 days...it was TORTURE! My mom swore that she was never hungry on it but I was starving 24/7. On day 4 or 5 I felt awful, like I had been hit by a truck and so weak. I gave up and was so glad I did. Lots of people where I work have done it and are doing it but I just don't understand how they are surviving. I ended up losing 8 lbs on it and gained it all back immediately. Within no time I lost that last 5 lbs without the HCG.

ETA: Some people think it makes you MORE fertile afterward because your body thinks it was just pg, so you are usually more fertile after a pg. My SIL and bro TTC for over 2 years with no luck. She got pg a month after going off the HCG - could be a coincidence, maybe not?

Jen, that's interesting about the HCG = pregnancy... how much do you want to bet that people will be taking it if they're having problems conceiving now?! It kind of makes sense though...

And don't feel bad for doing the diet! I swear by the Atkins diet (I lost 60 lbs last year doing it for five months with no exercise) but I know tons of people think it's a fad or it's too unhealthy... so what do I know lol!

Amanda, no, HCG is just the hormone that is present in your body only when you're pregnant. It's what makes a pregnancy test positive. I don't think it has anything to do with how it makes you feel, as some women (me being one of them) don't experience any type of morning sickness... at least not that I've ever heard! I think you can just blame baby for that lol!

I don't follow the Atkins diet, but the diet I do follow is kind of similar to it, a paleo/primal diet and it's actually much healthier than a vegetarian diet or low-fat diet (no offense to any veggies...I used to be one myself). Our bodies need fat and they were not made to digest grains and sugar. I know, some people think it's crazy and it completely goes against everything we have been taught about nutrition, but if you read the science behind it, it makes a lot of sense. My DH and I went on this diet in February and he has lost 25 pounds, his cholesterol has decreased, and his blood pressure has improved. I lost 12 pounds, got pregnant after 6 years of trying, and haven't really gained any weight with my pregnancy so far. So, not only do we look and feel better, but our health has improved. It's become a way of life now. Ok, I'll stop with my advertisement now. Smile

Carrie, that's great! It also sounds like it helped you get prego!! DH has been doing Atkins since February and lost 50 lbs by July! I'm so jealous that he's losing and I'm gaining again lol!

I just have to say I WISH my husband would lose some weight right now, even though I'm gaining... I joke that it would make it easier to hug if we didn't both have bellies:p
