Heartburn ugh!

Anyone else have all-day, fire-raging heartburn?

It started about two weeks ago at night only, now I am all day every day! I had it bad with DS. In fact so bad that I had to have surgery on my vocal chords due to a scar and my Dr. thought it could have been from the heartburn.

Tums helps but then I get constipated  I feel like I have to choose between heartburn or poop.

Oh bummer! I do get heartburn sometimes but it's not the all-day horribleness kind so the occasional Tums keep it at bay. I guess it's time for Tums + prunes? Smile

I was totally about to start a thread about heartburn but you beat me to it! I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I have a moderate to severe case of heartburn pretty much ALL the time. Its seriously getting ridiculous. And it doesn't matter what I eat, it all gives me heartburn. Yesterday was particularly miserable, and I had to sleep pretty much sitting straight up....so annoying. Tums are my best friend right now.

One of the things that's frustrating for me is that eating late at night or before bedtime causes more indigestion, but if I go to bed with an empty stomach I get indigestion too! So it's a vicious cycle...

Everyone tells me I will have a hairy baby because of the heartburn. This used to be just an old wives tale but there is new research that says that if you suffer from heartburn regularly during pregnancy, you are more likely to have a baby with lots of hair. Something about the same hormone that causes heartburn is the one that produces fetal hair growth.

I get the most horrid heartburn from the very beginning of pregnancy until the end. Most people get relief from Zantac, but that just takes the edge kind of off of it for me, so I have been taking prevacid for a little over a week. Wow, I can't tell you how much I adore this stuff. Not even a hint of burning, ever. That is seriously a huge miracle for me. It is also a category B drug so as safe as they get for pregnant women. Hope you get some relief!

I had it with DS and the OB was able to give me a Rx to take. I hope you ladies get relief soon and you don't spread it to me Blum 3 It was horrible to deal with.

Constipation is common with large amounts of Tums and obviously your more susceptible when pregnant to constipation anyway.

Zantac (Ranitidine) and Prevacid are both category B and OTC but I would try to get your OB to give you a script because a lot of insurances with cover them too.

If they think you had damage from the heartburn its important to find something that helps keep it under control. Repeated damage can actually constrict your esophagus and cause lots of problems in the future.

I don't have heartburn all the time. If my stomach gets too empty I get slight heartburn. But if I eat greasy foods I can get heartburn as well. But it's hit or miss. One time a food can give it to me and the next time I eat it then I am fine.

I want to echo the prevacid advice. My dr. told me if I was taking more than 3 tums per day it was time to move to a preventative medicine with my last pregnancy. I usually only took 1-2 so I never went that far but would have if needed.

oh you poor thing! heartburn hurts terribly! I would ask about Zantac as well! the paperwork I was given from my midwife said its safe to take, but my pregnancy book from the Mayo Clinic days not to take it. I took zantac with my last pregnancy towards the end. I hope you feel better!

I bought some Prevacid at Wal mart tonight. Hope it gives me some relief!

Is Prilosec the same kind of medicine (like does the same thing) as Prevacid? The sheet my OB gave me has Prilosec listed but not Prevacid, but I think they are the same type of stuff.
