I'm an itchy mess.

So for the past 3 days I've gone from normal itchy to crazy waking me up in the middle of the night itchy. I called my doctor and he had me in and while I have no rash he gave me a hydrodoxyzine to take to see if it helps. If it doesn't then he'll go forward with more serious tests like for ICP etc.

Its so weird but even thought I'm in a crazy itchy mess I don't want to take anything because I've spent the whole pregnancy NOT taking stuff. Has anyone else ever taken this during pregnancy?

Hope you get some relief soon. I only have one really itchy spot on me, but it's more than just itchy...it burns! And I can't even scratch it because it hurts too much. My midwife told me there's not really much I can do for it except what I am already doing...lathering up daily with belly salve. I am not familiar with the stuff they gave you, but I hope it works if you decide to use it.

hmmm.. considering your itching is severe, I'm surprised the doc isn't testing right away for ICP, considering it's third trimester! My sister had the severe itching and she asked for the test, which confirmed she indeed had it. (All was fine, she was just induced a few weeks early because her levels got to a certain point where they would be concerned. Baby was born big and healthy though!)

Hydroxyzine is classified in category C, which means "Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks."

I would consider asking for the ICP test. I know itching sucks, but if you do have the condition then at least they can give you some ideas to manage it Smile

I just got done dealing with tests for ICP and I highly recommend you just call and ask them to do the test now for a couple reasons.

1. They use Hydroxyzine to help with ICP itching so even if you take it and it helps it won't mean you don't have ICP.

2. My test just came back today and they took the blood on Sunday plus the OB said depending on the lab it can take two weeks to come back.

They gave me Hydroxyzine too but I choose not to take it. I did try benadryl but that didn't help me. They are same family although Hydroxyzine is stronger. I choose not to take it because ICP can cause a lot of stress on the baby and I didn't want to add to it by taking unnecessary medications.

Do the bottoms of your feet and palms of hands itch? They are supposed to itch the worst when you have ICP. I itch all over and have for over 3 weeks but my palms dont itch very often and my feet just started to the last week. I use relaxation techniques from my hypno class to help me fall asleep but my husband has had to actually hold my hands a few times to keep me from itching.

As far as lotions my OB recommended Eucerin cream and said that I could mix in a little OTC Hydrocortisone cream with some of the Eucerin for the really itchy spots.

One last thing, If it is ICP a low fat diet and no fried foods can lessen the amount of bile your body produces and therefore help keep your levels lower which is safer for baby. I eat pretty good but I put myself on a very strict diet. Hasn't help my itching but I felt better knowing I'm doing everything I can.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with this too. I just got my bile acid results back today and they were negative but ICP can be so serious that they said they might consider testing me again if the itching doesn't resolve and no rash develops. I've done a lot of reading on ICP in the last week so please PM me or post here again if I can maybe help.

I probably don't count for this post because I'm itchy all the time regardless. I have horribly sensitive skin, and I can't wear any scented lotions, use smelly body washes or anything like that. My derm perscribes me Taclonex for when it gets really bad. Thankfully I have only had to use it a couple of times, for my tummy, during this pregnancy, as it's classified "C" in the "is this safe to use during pregnancy" category. If your stuff doesn't work for you, you might want to inquire about it!

Sorry that you're itching too! Is your skin dry? I know when the weather starts to turn cold (not sure where you live) that my skin gets really dry and itches. Also when my belly is growing it seems to itch alot more. I personally have a fear of taking medication while pregnant. I haven't even so much as taken a Tylenol this whole pregnancy. I just have to many "what ifs" and I can't make myself do it. I know that may be silly to some but I have to live with my conscience....lol.

I think I would ask the doctor to please do the testing to be on the safe side. From what others have said that doesn't seem like anything to be taking lightly.
