Jonah's two-week appointment

My little peanut was up to 6lbs 5oz!!! When we left the hospital his weight had dropped to 5lbs 9oz (down from his birth weight of 6lbs 3oz). I was so glad he gained! He's still so tiny. He still swims in his newborn clothes.

The lactation consultant wanted the ped to check his tongue to see if it needs clipped, Ped did not agree. She said it wasn't too bad and would stretch. She said if he wasn't gaining weight in the next two weeks then she would re-evaluate the need if it's affecting his feeding. I think it is still affecting his latch somewhat. I still have pain when feeding. If I use a nipple shield he doesn't get full and wants to eat 45 minutes later so I can't use it.

oh I love reading good baby reports. I can relate about the shield. I am so glad that Luke is using it now, but I have to follow up with a bottle or nurse again 45 minutes later when he uses it. I just don't know how to get him to finally latch onto just me.

Yay for a good baby report though! We don't get 2 week appts here. Luke went Monday because he is sick ( he got the cold his brother and sister have been passing around) but his next well baby isn't until the 20th ( 5 weeks)

Glad your peanut is gaining weight! Allyson had her 2 week appt today as well. Sorry your LO is tongue-tied, my DS #1 was that way as well. Our ped did not see a need to clip it when he was an infant b/c it never affected BFing; however, he did end up having it clipped this past May (he had just turned 4 years old) because the ped said it may affect his speech in future years. Hopefully it will not have an effect on your BFing him!

That's awesome that he gained weight!! I hear you on the nipple shield, I have to use one too. It's so frustrating. I am getting slightly more successful at latching him on the nipple during his more active phases.

I really hope Jonah doesn't have to have his tongue snipped and things will work themselves out. Sounds like you're doing a great job feeding him - he is gaining after all and that's what counts. Biggrin

Way to grow Jonah! I'm glad he got the clean bill of health from the pedi Smile

Are you using a small nipple shield or have you tried one? I don't know if it would help but I do know they come in different sizes.

Glad to hear that he is doing so well! Are your peds willing to clip their tongues? I know around here alot of them are trying to get away from doing it and just want to do speech therapy. I only know of one in the area that will do the tongue clippings here and you can bet that if Ryan needs his done then we will go to them to do it. It seems so much easier to clip it (I mean for boys they get circumcized with "just a snip" don't they?) and get it over with than to go through all the BF'ing and possible speech issues.

Way to grow Jonah! I hope he doesn't need his tongue cut, my son had to have that done and DH said it was horrible (I didn't go, I made him go with him, I couldn't handle that!)...

Our ped doesn't do it- he sent us to an ENT doc to have it done. That doc gave us the option of having it done in the office with local anesthesia or having it done at the hospital (with gas). He said that doing it in the OR would allow him to better remove all of the scar tissue, etc. and less chance of having some of that skin grow back, but he said it was our choice. We chose to have it done in the hospital...it was an easy procedure (besides having my little boy go under for the first time Sad ) but it was over in like 10 minutes. Sorry- didn't mean to hijack this thread, just thought I would answer from our experience of having this done...

I'm glad you posted this. I really have no idea what clipping entails. My ped won't do it, she would send him to an ENT. But she really thinks it will stretch on it's own.

Good news though, we had Jonah weighed again and he is up to 6lbs 10oz!!! He gained 5oz in less than 3 days!!! I guess this means he is BFing just fine! Poor kid was circumcised today Sad
