I am not one for clutter and having a little person in my life has been exercise in letting some clutter take over my home. The dilemma I'm running into as DS grows is what to keep and what to give away when it comes to all the clothes, equipment, toys and other baby stuff. Our house is not very large and storage space is hard to come by so in the past my general rule for my and DH's stuff is to move old stuff along as new stuff comes in. But the frugal part of me wants to hang onto DS's outgrown stuff in the event that we can use for a future baby. I'm not even sure if I will have a second child but think I would be kicking myself if I donated or sold it now and then changed my mind later on. I wish I had some family or friends I could lend some stuff with option of getting it back if needed again. Or I wish I knew if DS was going to be our only child. I need to figure this out soon because my bedroom is swimming with outgrown baby clothes and the swing (which DS never liked anyway) is becoming a nonfunctional fixture in our living room
What is everyone else doing with their old baby stuff?
We swap the clothing as they grow out of it (peace. love. swap. share the love. save some green – boutique style clothing and gear swap events since 2009 ~ Maternity, Baby, Children, Teen, Women) and pick up new-to-us stuff there. So far we haven't swapped, sold, or given away any of the gear. We do have a garage to temporarily hold onto that stuff, we're definitely not saving it for another baby, we just haven't gotten around to doing anything with it yet -- although there is very little gear we've actually outgrown so far, I think just the baby tub and the bouncy chairs. The general plan is to give away anything that was given to us and to sell stuff we bought (through our twins club or on Craigslist). I feel like if you're willing to go with used gear (practically everything we have was used and it's been perfect) then you're best off getting rid of your stuff and you can always buy used when you need it again later. I mean, spending $100-200 on used gear later is a little bit of a waste, but not so much if you consider that you didn't have to store that junk for a couple of years. You'll always be able to find a used swing, jumper, bouncy, pack n play, etc, etc.
I found I never really used the gear too much, at least not for very long. So I sold it. If I decide I want something again (likely another bouncer or swing for the first few months) I'll just buy it used and sell it again when I'm done with it. I sell all of E's clothing as she grows out of it on local swap & shop groups, and then I use that money to buy her bigger stuff secondhand. I am totally against clutter and "stuff" and we have a really small space, so that decision was made for us in a way haha. I just figure I have a better idea now of what I really NEED and if I decide I want it I will go find it used. Even though I might be out a bit of money, it's worth it to me to not have it hanging around. And I am making so much on selling it all anyway!
We are keeping everything so far because we plan to start trying for a second in another year or so. We do have plenty of storage space though so it's not a problem. I try to lend things to friends as they have kids to free up room. We bought used gear and I would do that again if needed.
Sidenote: Hilary!! Congrats! Saw your ticker I`m nowhere near ready to do this all over again.
You all make good points about the used stuff and being able to find more used stuff again later on if needed. Most of DS's stuff including clothes we were either gifted new or used or I bought second hand so I need to remind myself I'm not out a huge amount of money. I guess in the back of my mind I'm thinking if we do decide to TTC again, chances are we are going to have to go the IVF route again. Hopefully being able to use frozen embryos will be somewhat cheaper than fresh but we wouldn't know how many cycles it would take. Also we are paying quarterly to keep our embryos frozen somewhere - little buggers already costing us money I guess I just need to really let go and realize another kid will come at some price no matter how much stuff I hoard or let go.
I bought mostly everything (the gear) new, because I knew there would be a number 2, so we are keeping everything in storage until the next baby comes along (hopefully in a year or two). Fortunately, we have a lot of attic space. Clothing is another story. I get most of her clothes second hand or on clearance for the next year. I'll keep it around in case I need it for the next baby.
With DS, I had planned to save everything, so that I did! When we found out we were having a girl, I got rid of all of the boy clothes ((because totes were overtaking our house and it was going to be YEARS before we'd need them again...and the seasons might be off anyways!)). Now with Vivi, I'm trying to get rid of her clothes as she outgrows them, but I've been keeping all of the baby gear incase.
