    Default Kitchens (OT)

Anyone care to share what your kitchen looks like? It could be a pic or description. I am trying to figure out what I want to do in my kitchen in the new house. Right now the plan is to give the walls a fresh coat of paint (just off-white), but I am debating what I want to do with the cabinets. Right now they are painted blue, but they definitely need some help and I can't decide if I should give them some color or just keep them white. Just looking for some ideas, I guess.

I would show you pics of my kitchen, but it's nothing fancy. We bought the house when it was 70% built and we didnt really get to pick a lot of stuff. I do like my kitchen because its big and has lots of cabinet space, but we weren't able to get any upgrades really. My cabinets are light brown wood, my countertops are dark formica that looks like faux marble and my appliances are black/stainless. But...if you want pics let me know and I'll take some.

We just purchased black/stainless appliances today (well, the stove and fridge at least). I'm thinking of going with white on the walls and maybe painting the cabinets a nice chocolate color. Eventually, I would like to tile the countertops and backsplash and change the flooring. Lots of projects for the upcoming years...

We are in the same boat. The kitchen in our new place needs work and I'm not sure what to do. We're replacing the cabinets and countertops and just picked out flooring. We need all new appliances (the ones in it are gross and some don't work...joys of foreclosures). I'm not sure what colors we're going with yet. I've been looking at houzz.com for ideas.

Do you have pics of what it looks like right now so we can see before photos?

Lots of us in the same boat...lol We just bought our house six months ago so everything is pretty much as is. We wanted to get settled in and get used to paying the bills and such (this house was a big upgrade from where we used to live and the payment was almost doubled!) before we started to tackle renovating the house like we wanted. We don't have granite countertops or stainless steele appliances like most people have. It does have a beautiful tile as a back splash. It's has tiles in it that have pictures and depict things from Italy and I absolutely LOVE that. It's pained a light brownish color (I am not good at describing color). We want to eventually put in new countertops and we want to refinish or paint the cabinets.

Jessicah, don't feel bad. We are in the same boat with the kitchen. We did just purchase new appliances, but they haven't been delivered yet. The kitchen has a weird layout, it is in desperate need of a coat of paint, and in the future I would definitely like to put down new flooring and new counter tops. We are hoping to enclose one of the radiators so that we can create counter space above it, yet leave it open in the front for heat circulation. Here are a few pics, so you can see the loveliness of it all. LOL. I want to get the wallpaper border stripped and the room painted before the appliances are delivered next weekend.

We have medium wood colored cabinets with a fake granite looking countertop. There is a gray tile backsplash with stainless appliances. The floor is just the continuation of our hardwoods. We bought a fairly new house for the exact reason that we didn't want to renovate.

I could see you doing a mexican type theme with the architecture near your cabinets if you are into that.

Another idea I like a lot in other houses are white cabinets (easy to paint over what you have) with black countertops. It goes really well with stainless appliances and gives a fresh modern approach.

GOOD LUCK with whatever you choose!

Changing the hardware on your cabinet doors will make a big change with relatively little effort.

You also might want to consider doing a cool backsplash of some sort behind the sink.

Paying attention to your ceiling fixtures is a good way to update a room.

Here's my kitchen... it's a 1920's house, and the kitchen was remodeled in the 90's. So when we moved in this past Halloween, we focused on silly stuff, like getting the heat and A/C working again, and painting over the marker and crayon on the walls, and refinishing the floors under the nasty stained carpet, and have mostly left the kitchen to its own devices. Thieves broke in and stole the old fixtures, so the lights are our additions.

is a view from the eating area to the cooking area. The stove vent hood is steel with copper accents that don't come through in the pic, but a nice bonus. You can't tell from the angle, but in front of the sink is a protruding window with little shelves for live herbs and potted plants to sit in the sun. Lots of drawer and cabinet space, lots of countertop workspace, good outlet placement. The ceiling is beadboard, which is cool, and the backsplash is more of the same beadboard, painted red.

is a view from the cooking area of the kitchen to the eating part of the kitchen. The double wall oven is nice. The fridge has its own little recess. There's a shelf that runs along the top where I keep my cookbooks. The microwave sits in a little built-in. There are five windows in the eating area, so the house came with wood slat blinds and some heavy green curtains which are nice for privacy/keeping the room cool/keeping the room warm.

HGTV wouldn't be impressed, but it's much nicer than the 1970's avocado flower countertops and galley kitchen we left behind at our old house.

    Good luck with your remodel!

Here is a pic of most of the kitchen. You can't see the other walls which are painted but yu can get an idea of the wall color if you look above the cabinets at the top of the picture. You can see the tile that I was talking about though. The cabinets, appliances, and counter tops are in need of updating but we will get there eventually! We eventually want new counter tops, to update the cabinets and the hardware, and stainless steel appliances.
