Over feeding??

So apparently I have a lot of milk and Elaina is pretty good with her latch, usually. She gained 13 oz in less than a week, and now she's over her birth weight already at 8 lbs 11 oz. she nurses a loooong time, usually both sides, but she's had sme serious projectile spit ups following feeds. She loses a LOT but she's still content and not usually hungry after. And clearly she's gaining a ton. Could I be over feeding her?? Sometimes she gets some air in when her latch gets lazy, but usually she's just doing a really good feed.

I'd say no. Babies won't eat when they aren't hungry. And as far as her gaining, that's is great. BF babies gain a lot at the beginning but slow down later. FF babies gain it all later - they are kind of reversed. My DS was a chunky baby with rolls on rolls but now he has thinned out a lot.

I think it sounds like you are doing a great job and have nothing to worry about.

I'd say you are not overfeeding her. Some babies just have a lot of spitup issues. The gain is great. Luke gained 11 ounces in a week and the pedi was thrilled with it. If you are concerned about the spitting up then talk to your pedi, but you shouldn't withhold feeding her because if she wasn't hungry she would refuse the second breast or let go.

Do you burp her before changing sides? Maybe she has a burp in there that waits to come out at the end?

My first loved to eat and was a happy spitter. He spit up a TON but it never seemed to hurt or create discomfort. My doc wasn't worried.

Rory at his 2 week appointment was up to 11 lbs 5 oz and he loves to eat too but so far doesn't seem to spit up like Evan did at least not yet.

This or she may just be a spit-up baby. You are doing great! I wouldn't worry too much about it, just be ready for the spit up!

Way to go Hilary! That's great she's feeding so well. I am no expert but would agree that I would just feed her a much as she wants. Maybe take a few little breaks while you feed her, that seems to help Ryan digest better so he doesn't spit up too much.

I feed on demand. Maybe just a little reflux? Do you burp between breasts?

I agree you cannot over feed a breast fed baby. Don't worry.

Whew, thanks ladies! Glad to know it sounds like everything is okay. Yep sometimes we burp her between breasts, but the last bunch of feeds she is falling asleep after one breast and hasn't made it onto both in awhile. Then I just keep her quiet and still in my arms for a bit and she does okay. Still some spit up but not as much. She will definitely have more if she takes both breasts close together.
