Sciatic nerve pain?

For the past couple of days Ive had this shooting pain when I walk or stand that's really far down on my back, almost on the left side of my butt, and by the back of my pelvic area. I described this to my DH and he mentioned sciatica, so I looked it up and all my symptoms match. Ive tried laying on my side to relieve pressure and that's only temporary. It's really painful, and pretty irritating. I haven't taken anything for it yet, I was going to wait until I saw the doctor on Thursday.

Anyone else having this or had this in past pregnancies? Any advice on how to get relief?

I would definitely recommend chiropractic. I used to have serious pain like this and 2 trips to the chiropractor took care of it completely. I have a feeling that I am going to have problems with this again as my baby grows, so if I do, I will definitely go back to the chiropractor.

I started having a little trouble with it after the birth of DS1. Now it comes and goes. Fortunately, it hasn't been around much recently, so I've been able to forget about it for the time being. But I also look forward to seeing people's suggestions, because I have no doubt it will rear its ugly head again many times! :o

Relief is basically being in whatever position makes it not hurt. Try avoiding sitting at all, and if you do have to, try using a small half-circle lumbar support. Stretching can also help -- just not the leaning forward type of stretching. Lightly stretching the IT band helps me a lot. I lie on my back and cross that left leg in slightly.

I forgot to mention that the chiropractor also gave me some stretching exercises to do. Lie flat on your back with both legs flat also. Now bend one leg and pull your knee close to your chest. Keep the other leg straight. Hold the stretch for a count of 30, then switch legs. Repeat these stretches but this time pull your knee across your chest toward the opposite shoulder. Finally, pull both knees toward your chest and gently rock back and forth at your hips for a count of 30.

I had the same thing when pg with DS. I had to see the chiropractor 2-3 days a week until I just couldn't afford to go anymore. I was in severe pain now matter what I did - sitting, standing, walking - whatever. I felt like I had broken my tailbone.

I hope you get some relief soon!

I haven't had this, but my MIL said that yoga really helps it.

I had the worst experience with this. My first pregnancy i had to leave work 6wks before i was due because it was so bad. This time it's bad already so I'm in for it! I have a herniated disc bulging on my sciatic nerve so it's a dousy. Hot Baths, at least 4x a week was my savior for sure!!
