Was it a tail?
Okay, I know it wasn't a tail, but Jonah has these dimples right at his tail bone, and one even in-between his butt cheeks--three in all, I believe. I've read that these were "accidents," so to speak, as if nature took a few tries getting the placement of his bum hole right, but I've also read that one has to be careful that they don't go too deep, cuz, well, that would be both bad and extremely unpleasant. Anyone else's LO have the same? I can't see his paediatrician until 2 weeks into the new year, and I'm too impatient to wait to find out what it means...
Very odd... I've never heard of this so Im anxious to see what the other girls have to say...
It sounds like what you are describing is what is called a "sacral dimple". My son was born with one. You can't see it unless you were to spread his butt cheeks. It was discovered at birth and the doctors immediately checked it to make sure it "had a bottom". It did, so there was no concern/anything further with it. From what was explained to me, if it does not have a "bottom" (ie closed), then it can sometimes be an indication of a very mild form of spina bifida (the neural tube did not completely close/closed late) and they would've done further investigation (ultrasounds) to double check it. Since it was closed... like I said, no concerns and it was just another little crevice to make sure we cleaned after a messy diaper LOL
If your doctor didn't mention it when your baby was born, it's likely nothing to be concerned about but asking him would set your mind at ease :)
All my kids have the dimple thing halfway up the butt crack. The peds always look at it but never say anything. I guess they're checking for the "bottom" like PP mentioned. I'd be curious what your doc says.
Oh, thank god--I'm glad others have had this, too. The doc said nothing about it when he checked him out, but after reading Rate My MD about him (he was just assigned to us at the hospital), he is known to barely say anything about anything unless pressed. All seem to have a bottom, so thank you, you have lessened my fears. We will quiz him about them when we see him, though. I wonder if the very presence of them is an indication that spina bifida was just on the very, very verge of occurring. I hadn't completely weaned off of my meds when I found out I was pregnant, and both cause spin bifida. Jonah had around a week's worth of minor exposure. Ah well, it's all just speculation now.
Well to be honest, when my ds was born they didn't say a heck of a lot about it either other than they were just checking a dimple before they brought him to me... I did my own research/asked questions later and that's when I found out the "rest of the story" LOL Likely they wouldn't say too much, so as not to panic parents, unless there was a need to, kwim? I can promise the sacral dimple had ZERO effect on my ds... he was full out walking before 9 months and had been climbing anything and everything well before that! LOL

Tehe. I have a dimple there myself and am happy to report no I'll effects :)
