Why oh why do I do this to myself? UPDATE Post #9

I rented a doppler a couple of weeks ago and have found the hb 2-3 times since then with no problem. I have had 4 ultrasounds, including one LESS THAN A WEEK AGO and everything was fine. So why, why, why am I stressing because I have tried to find the hb 4 times in the past 3 days and haven't found it any of those times??! I am seriously considering sending the thing back. Any of you doppler users having a similar experience? Or any words of reassurance anyone can give me? Bleh!! I am walking a fine line here of not wanting to use it TOO much, and panicking.

I have one too. I bought mine, and it's been frustrating me lately because it's not as accurate as the hospital grade one. I don't think it tells me the correct bpm all the time. It seems like it has to get it 100% before it tells you (does that make sense? Like I can hear it fine, but it's picking up mine too or something so the bpm isn't correct?). Anyways...

*Have you tried having a full bladder? That seems to kind of push the baby up like how they tell you to have a full bladder for an u/s
*Use lots of gel/lube
*Lay totally flat

i never tried a doppler on myself! I am gunna ultrasound myself at work this weekend though lol

i imagine there is a pretty big margin of operator error. I remember when i did my OB rotation i would easily spend 5-10 minutes looking for a fetal heart beat on patients. then the physician would come in and get it in 15 seconds. im sure everything is fine, it's just like playing Marco-Polo.... but no one is shouting back Wink baby is probably just hiding!

Ok, although I will look like an idiot when I respond to this, at least you will know what happened with me. I had a doppler that my SIL gave me, she got it from a nurse friend of hers - its the one they use at the OB's office. I would use it several times a week, get the heartbeat almost immediately and just lay there and listen, so sweet.

Then I went to the OB and they had trouble finding the heartbeat. I told them I knew exactly where it was because I listen to it all the time. I pointed the nurse in the general direct and she informed me that what I had been listening to was MY heartbeat, ROFL

I don't' think dopplers are foolproof - you definitely have to work at it, especially early on when the baby is so small.

After my embarrassing appt I finally figured out how to tell the difference between mine and DS's heartbeat and it was MUCH harder to find. LOL

I bought one with my first baby, but it's not something that I care much about now... it makes it all the more special when I go to the OB. Plus, I've been feeling baby move for about a week now, and to me that's way cooler than hearing the HB!

You guys are making me laugh. Smile Thanks for making me feel better, and thanks Jenn for admitting to your doppler faux pas Wink

I know it's highly unlikely that anything has happened to the baby, but it just makes me uneasy. I keep wanting to tell more people that we're pg, but then this is holding me back. It doesn't help that I've been having some menstrual-type cramping the past couple of days. No spotting though. My dr. told me if I ever get worried, or feel like something's not right, to just call and they would get me in, but I hate doing that. My next appt is in 2 weeks. We'll see. I keep thinking that I am feeling the baby move, but I am not sure. Maybe I'll start a post about that. Thanks for indulging my crazies, girls..

Kim, I've been really worried too. We just told my immediate family on Monday. I so badly want to scream our news from the rooftop, but I'm way too nervous. I feel like I'm going to jinx myself with whatever I do. That's a whole new post, but I'm being such a nutcase.

It's hard after you've had a loss.

Update: I found the hb with the doppler this morning! :woohoo: I basically let my bladder fill up until I was about to pee all over myself! Lol But it worked! I feel a lot better now.
