Hi gina

I have had 2 of these.
Pain wise I think it's quite individual.
For me the first was uncomfortable... More so because they couldn't attach the suction cap to my cervix so it got a little sore and when the dye went through I was a little crampy.

The second one the inserted a tube through my cervix and I hardly felt anything. Minimal cramping.
I was a little sore for a couple of days after.
It's quite fascinating watching the dye work it's way round.

Make sure you ask what's going on.

As to trying... I had to hold off for that cycle due to dye and possible infection.
I fell pregnant for the first time the next cycle after my first

After the second we had to hold off as it showed scarring from my d and c's.
I have the op to remove that in June so we'll be away then.

It's overall nit too bad. Just like a smear really.
Can be a bit messy due to the dye.

Good luck love!!

Remember... Ask questions while it's being done.

Thank you! so it's individual as to weather or not you will be able to try or not that cycle? I ask because they told me to go ahead and take my Clomid which is really hard for me due to possible anxiety and I don't want this cycle to be wasted KWIM? I wonder if I should try this month and then do the HSG next month so the clomid isn't wasted?

I have had a few of these too. The cramping is just like AF cramps......take a few Advil an hour before the procedure and it won't be as bad.

Good luck!

The first hsg we tried but nothing happened.
The second hsg we didn't due to scarring.

I would double check.
A friend of mine was told to wait for the next af.

Either way... The majority of ladies I know who had this procedure including myself fell pregnant the next cycle.

I was allowed (highly encouraged) to start trying right after mine.

I had one done back in January, I was so terrified that it was going to hurt or that I would be in tons of pain afterwards. But it was totally painless! For mine they put a balloon into my uterus, blew it up with saline, injected the dye, watched it spill out from my ovaries, and it was all over in just a matter of minutes. My Dr said that some professionals believe having a HSG INCREASES your chances of conceiving for the next few months because it can kinda "clean you out", so I was encouraged to try. Of course it will probably all depend on what they find out from it, the person doing the procedure should communicate with you while they are doing it, telling you everything they are going to do and the outcome of the results (and if they don't you should ask). Best of luck! Biggrin

My hsg was a little diffent because they wanted to evaluate my uterine septum. So, after the catheter was threaded through my cervix they infused saline into the uterus. I felt that they two worst parts were putting the catheter through the cervix and the infusion of all that saline. I would say that both of those were worse than "just uncomfortable". Definately take 800mg of motrin before you go, and more 8 hours later.

That's the amount of ibuprofen I took prior, too. I remember the pinching feeling when they threaded the catheter through my cervix (my uterus was tilted and it took some "digging" to grab my cervix, too). I posted on the 0-24 month thread, too.
