Who's using one? When did you start? If you haven't given one yet, why not and do you plan to? What brand(s) do you/does baby like?
DD is hot and cold on them. When she first came home she was using the ones from the hospital and seemed to like it. Then stopped taking them. Then we pulled out and steralized some NUK ones and she liked those for awhile... now sometimes she takes it but sometimes she doesn't. Sometimes she gets really mad when I put it in. lol DD1 loved sucking on my pinky finger, but DD2's not really into that either.
I would actually love for her to take something because right now BFing is the only tried and true soother we have for when she's fussy. Which means 1. I can't really leave the house without her because if she's upset then poor DH has a wailing baby with no way to calm her down and 2. getting her to seep in the co-sleeper has been a challenge.... unless she's totally passed out before I put her in there, I can't sooth her to sleep. I end up pulling her into bed with me which, though I like the snuggle time, I don't think is a good long term solution. Need to get her consistently sleeping in a separate spot so that once she's sleeping for longer periods she can go to the crib in her room. Plus, I don't get good sleep that way. I sleep very lightly, always aware of how I'm positioned, where the covers are etc. to make sure she can breathe.
DD1 never took a paci. I was glad she didn't at the time... worried about how to eventually take it away. But then she was a thumb sucker, and you can't exactly take that away. She thumb sucked for a long time. But eventually it was only at nap/bed time and now I rarely see her do it unless she is super tired.
We have some NUK binkies on hand for when we try them with DS. He doesn't seem to be a huge comfort nurser now, except for when he's really gassy or if he poops and I change him, he wants to suck to get back down. DD wasn't into binkies and I was happy about it initially, but she did the same thing Bree is doing with the comfort nursing/pacifying and it was really hard to break her of that.
I haven't started him on a binkie yet just because sometimes he gets annoyed/has a hard time getting latched right away. My nipples aren't flat but sometimes they take a little bit to get erect enough for him to want to take. I worry if I give him a binkie too soon he'll start refusing me when he has those times when he doesn't latch instantly.
Both DS1 and 2 were addicted to pacis! In fact, I am having the hardest time breaking DS2 of his and he's almost 3. That being said, I sucked my thumb till I was about 5 yo so which is worse, right? I'm really leery about starting DS3 on a paci b/c I have such a crappy time with breaking the habit later on. I wish there were an easy answer in this dept...... Mia, now I'm worried about the comfort nursing habit! Oy vey.
I don't remember how early I started Kostas... I think around 3-4 weeks. He took to it and used it whenever he was fussy or falling asleep until he was 10 months and then he was just over it.
I tried one with Marek at like 7 days because we were on a long drive and he started to fuss toward the end. He was already doing great with BFing and it was only for like 5 minutes here and there otherwise I probably wouldn't have. I keep one in the carseat for Kostas to try to give him if he gets fussy on drives but he really doesn't take to them 98% of the time. He seeks his hands out much more often so I'm wondering if he will be a thumb sucker...
I sucked my thumb until I was in Kindergarten so I'm not super keen on the idea of having a thumb sucker... but lots of kids have a hard time giving up pacifiers too so its kind of like a "pick your poison" situation in my mind LOL
I agree that the paci/thumb thing is a bit of a "pick your poison" when your kid will take a paci and likes their thumb. DD found her thumb around 3 months and used it to pacify until she started teething a month later and then nothing worked so we got lucky in that she wasn't reliant on her thumb but she was always on the boob.
Yeah that's where we ended up going longer was BFing. He dropped the pacifier by 10 months and didn't thumb-suck but nursed til 3.5 LOL
How awesome to have BFd for so long!! I initially wanted to go to 2 and see where we were then with DD, but at 18 months I was getting really exhausted, she was almost always refusing solids for a couple weeks and so we started nursing just at naps/bedtime. Then I got the norovirus and couldn't nurse her for 5 days so that was the abrupt end I didn't want but I was glad to have nursed as long as we did. That whole time I felt bad she didn't use a binkie just to have another soothing option.
We definatly started comfort nursing more when DD was teething. She went through a brief period of nursing strikes around the same time as when she started teething so I was having to pump a little, put it in a boob like bottle (tommy tippe or avent) and "bait and switch" her back on the boob. The LCs thought I was nuts but it saved BFing for us despite being a total PITA at the time.
