    Default Early Labor Pains

With DD, I never had any early labor pains to speak of leading up to the day I went into real honest to goodness labor. I did lose a piece of my mucous plug one week before. But other than that, nothing. No cramps. No back pains (other than general achiness you'd expect from carrying extra weight). Then the morning that I went into Labor I woke up with menstrual-type cramps. I knew.... just totally knew that it was going to be that night.

Oh how different this is. I've been having BH for at least a couple of weeks. Seems to be mostly at night, but daytime too. My back hurts. I've got some cervix twinges. Last night around 4 I woke up convinced that my water had broken. Low and behold I was just sweating like a pig because DH had the humidifier on and the door closed (plus having BH contrax). I really thought that might have been it. sigh.

What have your experiences been with early labor pains?

Bh's tend to start warlier and get worse with each pregnancy. Hang in there, it will all be over before you know it

It's so hard to know when it's just your body gearing up and when it's the real thing. I was having tons of leakage that didn't seem like urine (though I was drinking a good amount of extra water from having so many crampy BH) so I called the on call OB on Saturday and almost had to go in.

For me, it just would start with lots of crampy contractions (just crampy when the contraction was at it's peak) where I could feel the progression of the contraction (instead of just feeling tightening like painless BH). The night before I went into labor, I didn't feel any different then I had been for the past week (though they stalled my labor with morphine the previous weekend). I woke up with my underwear being wet, peed then had a large gush. About 1/2 an hour later I started having contractions with wrapping back pain and menstrual like cramps and of course was gushing water everywhere. With this one, all my PTL signs have just been crampy BH, pressure and cervical pain.

An OB reminded me last week that the key to real labor is : longer, stronger, closer together. He said "real" labor would be contractions lasting 45 sec - 1.30 that just get worse and won't stop no matter what you do. It's tough with how you never know when they will continue or just fizzle out.

This is good info! You would think with this being my 4th that I'd be a pro at this by now, but each pregnancy has been so different. I was electively induced with my first two and, although I had BH contrax with them before induction, I never had any pain anywhere. With my 3rd, my water broke at 31 weeks and was hospitalized for 3 weeks at which time they induced me. This time, I'm hoping that I won't have to be induced! I'd like to experience what it's like to go into labor naturally so I'm glad to hear about how it has happened for you ladies! I am experience pain on the front side of my pubic bone (wonder if I might have pulled something??) and cervical twinges. I'm so glad you said you were having cervical twinges, Kristy, because I wasn't sure what the heck was going on down there!

I hope for school's sake that I can finish out the semester, which means I can't go into labor before Dec. 13th! EEK!

As someone mentioned before, BH come sooner and stronger and more often with each pregnancy. I am so sick of them right now because they started so much earlier... I also have the cervical pain and pressure--I feel like i need to use the bathroom all the time now, and the pelvic pain...ugh! Off and on I feel like I have the menstrual-type cramping.

When I go into labor, my biggest cue is the strength and length of the contractions. For me, the contractions get strong and last longer than BH. I don't really recall ever completely losing the mucous plug all at once, but every once in a while I'd notice some of it. And bloody show was a big sign for me as well, but I didn't get it every time.

I count myself lucky in that I don't have many discomforts unless it's nighttime. I've just now started getting painless BH with this pregnancy and had no idea until my mom told me what they were. D'oh! I had major back labor with DS1 that lasted forever after I lost my mucus plug. That was soooo long and painful!
