QOTW - Craigslist

Sooo.... DH knows this guy at his work who swears by the awesome deals that he gets on Craigs List. As a result, DH has been prompting me to look there for everything from wheelbarrows to couches. I will NOT, I repeat NOT buy a couch on Craigs List. There's just something about it because it's a fabric item... not knowing what type of people they are... there could be bugs in it for all I know. I'm not cool with that.

Anyway. I had been planning to borrow a friend's co-sleeper for this baby but she's now pregnant, about 8 weeks behind me, and will need it. So I started looking on CL. Now that might be contrary to what I just said, but I feel like the co-sleeper could be easily sanatized once I got it. There are some great deals out there.

To my QOTW - Do you or have you ever used Craigs List? What have you gotten a great deal on? Will you shop any baby items on Craigs List? How do you get over any privacy concerns? I.e. not wanting to go somewhere or have someone come to your house tha tyou don't know...

I use Craigslist ALL the time! We've used it to buy and sell items. We've sold vehicles, lawn equipment, exercise equipment, furniture, etc. We've bought furniture, my daughter's guinea pig, and lots of other items. I even bought and then resold a breast pump! It was just the machine part of it and then I purchased all the other parts new.

When going to purchase something, I always go with another adult--either my husband or I've even gone with my mom! It's the same thing for having people come over to look at items, I never allow people over unless my DH is here. Smile

I've only got a couple of things myself. DH has gone on his own but it was to public places when he was alone. Good friends of ours have bought tons of stuff from CL and have sold a ton too. I would be okay with baby items like a toddler bed frame if it was still assembled and all that or those sorts of things, but fabric things I"m more wary of even if I can wash the stuff. I'd be more likely to look for swings and the sort at a consignment store where I can usually browse a bit more.

I have used craigslist to both buy and sell... have gotten TONS of incredible deals... from cake pans, rugs, furniture, toys for DS (bought a jungle bouncer thing that is at least 100+ and we spent like 25 and got a GOOD bit of jumping out of DS with it) I have sold furniture, decor etc as well. Usually I would meet at their house, but never alone.. always took DH or someone else with me... OR met somewhere public and well lit--grocery store etc) I never had anyone come to the house unless DH was home.. except one time bc I was about 8 months preg and it was a full size bed.... DH was at work but we told the nosey (In a looking out for you way) neighbor across the street that someone was coming and I can say he watched out his window the entire time and even when the guy came in to get the pieces (the living room had a full bay window- so the neighbor could still see) he came over to say hi... SO common sense, never alone. I also try to meet the person outside when they do come to the house

I have also used craigslist to both buy and sell. And soon we will be listing a trailer and air compressor and a garage sale. I just can not imagine trying to sell a trailer or bigger item without using craigslist anymore.

Currently we are looking for a bedroom set for this LO so we will at least have a dresser. I will not buy mattresses off of there or things like couches I suppose. But I did recently give away a couple year old mattress and listed it as very good conditon that has always used a waterproof matress protector. The guy that picked it up was pretty excited to have something better then he had.

90% of my maternity clothes I got on a big lot from there. Being my last pregnancy and a harder to find size and having nothing, I was not going to buy new for the most part. I did have to buy a couple things. It was a great deal and the perfect size!! Not everything do I wear but it will get me through.

I love Craig's List too. I don't think I'd buy mattresses or furniture or things that can't be washed, but that's just me. I got a huge lot of almost brand new clothes for DS2 on there and my DS1's power wheel jeep. Have you looked on FB for 'sales in your area'? Like an online garage sale? We have a few pages on FB for my area and they are well moderated. I trust that better than CL.

I've never heard of the FB "sales in your area" pages. Will have to check that out.

I picked up my new co-sleeper today at lunchtime in a crowded parking lot. It was a great experience and think I will definately use it again.

I have used craiglist, but have discoverd fb pages!! I'm too lazy to go meet places. Most people want to mee you half way. I'm not into that. If I have to work in your area, I don't mind bringing it to work.

I also get promo jobs off of cl. I do alot of marketing and find a bunch of 1-4 day jobs that pay well. I've done great in the last 6 years!

I've used Craigs a few times- but recently find myself on FB sale pages too! Its nice because everyone in the group has to know somebody that you know somehow- and they have their own FB page so it's not like a made up email addy/scam.
In my county theres a few buy/sell/trade baby items ones... so its nice to get baby stuff used and in great condition and to not have to travel!!!!
I bought a swing, well two swings, and clothes and stuff from the FB pages.
I search craigs everyday for furniture. I really want a crib and a big changingtable/dresser from there, I cant seem to find any in stores I want and NEW dressers are soooo expensive!! Found some really great ones for like 250 or less that i'd pay over 500 for in stores... So I search everyday for the right one!!

I dont think I'd buy used stuff that cant be washed either- just depends I guess on who it was/what it was..

If I end up buying a crib on craigs I think I'll just buy a new mattress!

Often I meet people at a local Starbucks or somewhere public if what I am buying is small. I know this sounds crazy, but there is a lady from Etsy who sells some of her stuff on Craigslist and at a local store, and I recognized her work on Craigslist. It wasn't scary going to her house, because I feel like I knew her from three places - though never met in person. Since I am due with twins in January we need all the help we can get. I am pickier this time of what I get on CL than last time though - looking for top notch stuff that has been gently used.
