Vitamins

What's your morning (or nightly) vitamin regimen? I *was* taking a multi vit with a folic acid and my RJ, then sometimes a cranberry supplement. Now I've started the prenatals. Should I stop my extra folic acid? How much is *too* much? And start a vit D. I always need extra vit D while preggo.

Folic acid is a water soluble B vitamin, so the excess is washed out of your body.
You can take a lot more than the 800 micrograms found in prenatals. Because I have history of a birth defect that could be neural tube related, I am taking 5 milligrams. (actually 4.8 because I could only find 400 mcg tablets. I take 10 tablets plus my prenatal)

I can't swallow pills larger then bcps and tylenol to save my life. I did okay in the first few weeks of DD's pregnancy with regular prenatals, but then when the ms hit hard and I threw up from trying to take one, I can't do it. I tried cutting them in half this time around and it isn't working so I'm taking two flinstones (I hate them but it's the only thing I can find with iron) which gives me all I need but enough folic acid, so I'm taking one gummy prenatal (that doesn't have iron) to make up the extra 400 mg or so in folic acid.

When we get pregnant I'm going to ask my MW for a chewable prenatal. I took the flinstones when I was pregnant with DD and she said that was fine just to take two and if I needed to they could give me an Rx for chewables.

B6 for the morning sickness ...last week was bad. Was happy the b6 gave me some relief after I tried a couple other things. Otherwise standard pre-natal. And whatever I can to get my sluggish system moving, sorry TMI. Thyroid appointment today and that could be contributing to that problem along with the pregnancy.

Janel, good to know this about folic acid. I think I will keep taking the extra just b/c.

I can only seem to stomach DS's Flintstone vitatmins for now... Hopefully, when I go to the OB she can write me an Rx for something a little more M/S friendly as opposed to the over the counter prenatals.

I too cannot take those big horse pills so my RE suggested these http://www.amazon.com/Vitafusion-Prenatal-Gummy-Vitamins-90-Count/dp/B003IP8BC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334763540&sr=8-1 They taste good. I take additional 800mcg of folic acid too.

Those are what I take in addition to the Flinstones. Biggrin I only take the flinstones because those prenatals don't have any iron.

Oh, I see that now. I'm sure that if this IVF cycle works they'll put me on something else Smile

:goodluck: That or maybe there's an iron supplement you can take with it?

:lurk:
Once my m/s hit I couldn't swallow hardly anything, especially not my prenatals, even now that my m/s is gone I can barely choke down tylenol. So I take a 1mg Folic Acid supplement, and 2 kids chewables w/iron a day. I've always had low iron with my previous pgs, so I'm really hoping I don't need an iron supplement, I almost never take them even when my dr prescribes them, because they make me miserably constipated.

I don't know about magnesium, might want to ask your Dr about that one. I get migraines too (especially in the summer when it's super hot here in Central Ca) so I'm curious to know if that would be a good thing to take to combat it?

As far as for allergies I believe the medicines that are ok to take are Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton allergy tablets), Loratadine (Alavert, Claritin, Tavist ND, Triaminic Allerchews), Diphenhydramine (Banophen, Benadryl, Diphenhist, Genahist). So it looks like that should be ok.

I just talked to the doc about magnesium for constipation and because I really should be taking extra calcium everyday (due to thyrodectomy), and he said that was absolutely fine And so far it is great, I haven't had tot ake any miralax since starting it.
Magnesium for migraines, I never heard that before.... This stuff should be more well known. especially if meds are not needed.

I am just taking folic acid and that is all I took with DS as well. When they did my original bloodwork last time my iron was high so the Dr said not to take a prenatal and then for my 2nd bloodwork my iron was normal and she told me I could start a prenatal every second day (I was already 6 months) so I didn't even bother.
