    Default apt today

So, today's apt went well -- got to see the baby on the ultrasound, she's currently breach with her head by my boobs and butt down sitting.... Dr says she's got plenty of time to turn.....so she's not concerned. Fluid level is fine, a little high, but said it's normal to see it a little on the higher side with GD. Baby is growing right on track - 50% - so i'm fine with that, her belly is measuring at 62%, but it's not outragiously huge.... She's at about 30wks3d.... so that's fine, and i'm measuring 2 weeks ahead...so dr says that i'm consistantly measruing ahead and baby is measuring right where she needs to be..... we check on her again in 4wks......and my weight gain is now about 8lbs.....i'm glad i've made it this far gaining little weight, cuz i'm sure it's all going to come on now..... lol. Tomorrow i see my endocronologist and i'm pretty sure i'm getting insulin at night.....i've accepted it and know it's best for me and my baby so, if it means my baby doesn't have to have her little pancreas work so hard to battle my sugars, then so be it.

This is probably not what anyone wants to hear, but I promise insulin shots really aren't so bad! As long as you don't have a huge needle it is truly no big deal! And its def worth it if you get to avoid the NICU nightmares of a baby with low blood sugar! I had such immense sugar issues last time, even with insulin, that I had that NICU low blood sugar baby. Really wanting to avoid that this time!

    Yay for a good appt!!!

yup, my DD1 was a low blood sugar baby and i hated it....so, i think that is one of my fears is having another baby with low blood sugars and a NICU stay.....yeah, the endocronologist mentioned its about the size of or smaller then the needle in the pen i use now....i'm just not a needle person, and after having to deal with fertility treatments and all those needles, i'm kinda over it..... BUT, if this will help baby, then i'm all for it and will do what i have to do....i've got like 8 wks left anyways.....so, what's a few more pokes...right?

Glad the appointment went well. Yeah... My Doc said at about 35 weeks they like to see baby in the correct position. I don't have my appointment until next thursday! Jealous! lol.

Well I'm glad you have become okay with the insulin. Good luck. KUP

Glad the appointment went well. Hopefully the insulin will help. Thats where Im going is meds or insulin because of my high numbers in the am.

Question for you and Jana with your previous babies how long was the nicu stay? Im getting worried with my numbers higher in the morning and possibly going on meds miss sophie having to do a nicu stay.

Kati, it took them 2 days in NICU to wean mine off the sugar i.v. so that his blood sugar levels were normal on his own without the extra glucose in his system. After that he was back in the room with me.

ETA: a common misconception (not that ya'll necessarily think this, just throwing it out there) is that insulin helps the baby. It actually doesn't, it is supposed to be used to counteract whatever you eat or whatever circumstance would normally send up your sugar so that it never goes high to begin with. Insulin does not cross over the placenta, but sugar does. That is why it is so important to counteract what you are eating as you eat it with enough insulin that the sugar level never really gets to rise very much, because once it rises at all, the baby gets that sugar and has to fight with its own insulin, causing it to produce more insulin, even though you are taking insulin to bring it down yourself. That's why you want to avoid the "see-saw" of eating then taking insulin or doing something AFTER your sugar is already starting to rise to bring down the sugar levels. Because once it hits high levels, the baby is getting that sugar, no matter what you do to bring it down later. I only throw that out there bc I never had anyone, including my drs, explain that to me last pg. I think it would have made a difference in the way I handled my insulin vs food intake!

Oh wow. I guess I have been uninformed on alot of things with GD. Thats something noone told me. I had GD with Taylor and he was ok other then being 3 weeks early but I was able to keep my numbers in check with just diet. This time its harder for me to keep it in check with diet. My dr hadnt told me any of that either pregnancy(same dr with both)

what jana saiid about the insulin - when i say it helps the baby - i'm really looking at it in terms of it's really helping me make my sugars more level in the overnight/mornings so i don't have that spiking and in turn, the baby doesn't get "spoonfed" sugar cuz the insulin will be keeping my sugars more fluid...... so it helps the baby too. I was nervous and not happy about going on insulin, but after i got a little more information on it and found out baby doesn't get the insulin, i felt better about it.

Unfort. my DD1 was in nicu for about 1.5wks.....she was on the iv for like a week.....the rest was cuz she was jaundice as well. Her sugars dipped REALLY low, like in the 30's and anything under 30 is dangerous for the baby....ie-brain damage....so it was pretty scary for awhile. - not telling you to scare you, but i had NO IDEA the complications GD could really have other then a big baby.....she was also 2wks early...and weighted in 9lb10oz....so she was a BIG baby... So, going on insulin in the big scheme of things is nothing, i really want to take my baby home with me this time.... With DD1, i controlled with diet and excersise, but as you can see she still had issues - My after breakfast and afternoon and eveing sugars are totally fine - it's just that fasting number thats too high. I start 15units, tonight, so we'll see how it goes..... I also read that some people who took insulin that it helped the others sugars kinda regulate - not sure of any truth to that, but i'm all about having my sugars be more flat lined then up and down.

Scary stuff. Im hoping I can get things straightened out for me and everything so that the baby is alright when she is born. Ive never had to leave my baby in the hospital or have them out of my room besides basic testing or whatever. Couldnt imagine leaving her there and going home without her.
