    Default Choosing formula

For those of you who formula fed your other LO's, can you give me advice on how to choose the initial formula to use?

I know we may have to try different types once she starts feeding if she has any reactions to it but we need to have something at home to start....

Most hospitals either have similac or enfamil. They are a bit expensive and the store brands are essentially the same as they are. Just read whats in it. I will be on WIC after I have the baby and here in Iowa it covers Similac so thats what Sophie will be on when she comes home. Sign up for free formula from similac and enfamil and parents choice. They will send you either sample size or regular size to your door. I have regular similac and the orange can of similac that they sent me they also sent me 4 of the lilttle bottles for supplimentation. I also bought a unopened little tub of similac blue. I signed up for it awhile ago and they sent it to me. I also got a free bottle. They will send you coupons also when you sign up and after you have the baby.

I like similac. When I stopped breastfeeding that's what I used and when I didn't have breast milk.

I'm planning and hoping to EBF, but since FH and I will be sharing parent time of a newborn, I asked some of my trusted friends what they use. From word of mouth, I've heard a few times that Costco brand is the best (nutrients, iron, easy on baby's tummy, etc) as well as being the most cost effecient. If I do have to use formula, that's what I will go with.

I breast feed but with DS the hospital sent us home with a bag full of items. It contained a couple little cans of formula. You could probably start there and see how your baby responds to that. If there is an issue you could look into switching after that.

def. see what samples you can get via mail and also the hosptial.......there's usually a gentlease one, that doesn't have the soy or milk in it - as it seems babies tend ot have a hard time breaking down those proteins....

My hospital doesn't, as standard, send the new parents home with anything unless you specifically ask them for something to tide you over until you get your WIC supply. They dont want to endorse one particular brand, and also there is a major movement in NYC and New York state regarding encouraging bf-ing.

I actually just received some sample tins from Enfamil in the mail today. Totally forgot I'd signed up with them. Must check if I signed up with Gerber and Similac too...

Glad you got some samples! It definitely depends on the child though. I BF, but when I was finished with DD she used Enfamil and DS used Similac. I also used the Target brand some with DD. I would advise having more than one brand on hand so you can change it up if one doesn't suit without having to go out in the middle of the night or something.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. I think the hospital uses Similac so I will make sure I have some on hand.
