Jade's EC Trail
okay this is such a cool idea and i hope no one minds me joining in (way easier than adding a larger calendar!)
bought a potty yest that plays music and graduates to the big toilet and becomes a stool. started with it today and so far so good!
only two dirty diapers! haven't been really actively trying to catch things but just flying on instinct with her as i can read her pretty good when i don't try for most things. starting off by taking her to the bathroom whenever she gets that special vacant look in her eye (pee'ing); start to smell it, the first time i tried this she held it when i said the words potty time!! and whenever she gets that special poop face. of the five times we went to pee, she did it three times, the other two were false alarms, plus the two that i missed for a total of five pees that i know of after about 10 am. and we caught a poop at bath time, she started, then looked at the potty and stopped when i said potty and went in the potty instead!!! for a first day at 7 months i'm feeling pretty confident so far and really hoping that we can continue this trend. she can sit, but prefers a little hand holding for support, her potty is in front of our toilet so that we can sit together and hold hands and make face to face time. she usually wakes up dry or is fresh wet so hoping that tom i can start from waking and see how it goes.
feeling so refreshed and calm knowing that this board is here and much less stressed about the possibility of 'forcing' this on my child. potty training before three years old do NOT make you a bad parent! lol!! what an odd thought!
day two and sooo much progress! not that i'm counting my chickens before they hatch but really trying to encourage her interest while it's there! we have only missed two pee's today and caught 4 others and a poop!! and to share a video from this morning! this was her third pee of the day in the potty, she said pahpah and pulled at her diaper all day when she wanted to go!
so we did really great the first couple days, she is even signing toilet now even though i hadn't used it in weeks! she will smile big and 'run' to the toilet without even saying anything sometimes and then go. last night and today though she seems tired, she hasn't had a pee this morning in the potty but did go more often in the potty yest than in her diaper. i think i've changed less than ten diapers since we started this journey! feeling pretty good about that since it's been three days now! all of her poops have been in the potty, novel concept, it's easier when there's a hole instead of a hard surface blocking!!!
right now just trying to keep consistent and positively affirm her signals with the potty, if she lets me know will sit there till she wants off, whether she goes or not. while it's not a toy, i want her to associate positive feelings with being on it.
side note, figured out why i think this is so normal and some around me dont (had a neighbour question me, positively at least, looking for more info) my dad is british, in europe this is perfectly normal if not starting late! waiting till 2 or 3 seems to be a 'western civilization' thing. it's so much easier to field all the attitudes that come this way when that logic is in place, plus ppl seem to respond better when i say that 'my dad is british, i guess it's a cultural thing to start early' has really smoothed over a few furrowed brows!
ah after a rough day yest we seem to be back on track today! got jade some princess pull ups, they are a little big but they work and she seems to love them (she loves pink!) and the best part was they were almost half price! only using them during the day when she is being consistent about the potty. we have yet to have a poopy diaper since we started!! everyday has been a good one in the potty! today i haven't even seen a wet diaper, dh may have done one first thing this morning, but not sure. it's funny how some days go well and others not so much! consistency is key and staying positive, i know if i stress about it then so will she, so we go with the flow!
looking into some cloth trainers, jade is doing great with the poops, not a single dirty dipes since we started on that front, and it's helping clear her out as she was apparently bunged up a little, 5 poops in one day! pee's still need some work on the communication part, mostly i catch them through persistence and vigilance not her signalling as she signals after the fact! but we are working on it and having fun, she pee'd in the big potty yest and thought it was fun! picked up some books from the recommended list here and found some great design your own cloth ones at the EC store for a good price. slow and surely wins the race and it's not about getting her trained right now as much as it is about teaching her to learn her own cues and what to do about it. the rest will follow on it's own!
Hi! Sounds like ya'll are off to a GREAT start! That age was awesome for my DS as well, lots and lots of success :)
That sounds like an awesome start to her EC journey!! Evie started at about 6 mths, so just a little before your DD, and she was not that great with pees to start. Yay Jade!!
I live in Edmonton too!
I've started from birth with my 3, and my second (Ivy) started refusing at 6mo! It looks like you are off to a great start. Keep it up, and mostly, don't stress about it. We all have our off days, or weeks, or for Ivy 7 months... then it just clicked again!
thanks for the encouragement ladies!! pees are still an issue with knowing i think since she's so used to the diaper now, but we have poops down to a science! sara, dh wants to know how the heck you do this with more than one!! lol! yay edmonton mom!
I do it when I can. With Ivy being 18.5mo, she is refusing to wear a diaper a lot of the time (or insisting that I put her in one), so it's "simply" a matter of catching her and making sure she goes on the potty (and stays off the rugs and furniture - she peed in her booster seat the other night - and on the chair under it. Ugh.

I guess I should also say that Ivy is showing that if we could focus on it seriously, we could probably toilet train her very quickly. She is using the potty by herself a lot. In fact, this morning she was getting very annoyed at me about food when she suddenly stopped mid-scream, walked over to her potty, had a huge pee, and then came back wanting what I was trying to give her. I think it suddenly struck her that the reason she was so annoyed was that she had to pee so badly! Can't toilet train before 2? Don't tell Ivy that!
