Jade's EC Trail

okay this is such a cool idea and i hope no one minds me joining in (way easier than adding a larger calendar!)

bought a potty yest that plays music and graduates to the big toilet and becomes a stool. started with it today and so far so good!
only two dirty diapers! haven't been really actively trying to catch things but just flying on instinct with her as i can read her pretty good when i don't try for most things. starting off by taking her to the bathroom whenever she gets that special vacant look in her eye (pee'ing); start to smell it, the first time i tried this she held it when i said the words potty time!! and whenever she gets that special poop face. of the five times we went to pee, she did it three times, the other two were false alarms, plus the two that i missed for a total of five pees that i know of after about 10 am. and we caught a poop at bath time, she started, then looked at the potty and stopped when i said potty and went in the potty instead!!! for a first day at 7 months i'm feeling pretty confident so far and really hoping that we can continue this trend. she can sit, but prefers a little hand holding for support, her potty is in front of our toilet so that we can sit together and hold hands and make face to face time. she usually wakes up dry or is fresh wet so hoping that tom i can start from waking and see how it goes.
feeling so refreshed and calm knowing that this board is here and much less stressed about the possibility of 'forcing' this on my child. potty training before three years old do NOT make you a bad parent! lol!! what an odd thought!

day two and sooo much progress! not that i'm counting my chickens before they hatch but really trying to encourage her interest while it's there! we have only missed two pee's today and caught 4 others and a poop!! and to share a video from this morning! this was her third pee of the day in the potty, she said pahpah and pulled at her diaper all day when she wanted to go!

so we did really great the first couple days, she is even signing toilet now even though i hadn't used it in weeks! she will smile big and 'run' to the toilet without even saying anything sometimes and then go. last night and today though she seems tired, she hasn't had a pee this morning in the potty but did go more often in the potty yest than in her diaper. i think i've changed less than ten diapers since we started this journey! feeling pretty good about that since it's been three days now! all of her poops have been in the potty, novel concept, it's easier when there's a hole instead of a hard surface blocking!!!
right now just trying to keep consistent and positively affirm her signals with the potty, if she lets me know will sit there till she wants off, whether she goes or not. while it's not a toy, i want her to associate positive feelings with being on it.
side note, figured out why i think this is so normal and some around me dont (had a neighbour question me, positively at least, looking for more info) my dad is british, in europe this is perfectly normal if not starting late! waiting till 2 or 3 seems to be a 'western civilization' thing. it's so much easier to field all the attitudes that come this way when that logic is in place, plus ppl seem to respond better when i say that 'my dad is british, i guess it's a cultural thing to start early' has really smoothed over a few furrowed brows!

ah after a rough day yest we seem to be back on track today! got jade some princess pull ups, they are a little big but they work and she seems to love them (she loves pink!) and the best part was they were almost half price! only using them during the day when she is being consistent about the potty. we have yet to have a poopy diaper since we started!! everyday has been a good one in the potty! today i haven't even seen a wet diaper, dh may have done one first thing this morning, but not sure. it's funny how some days go well and others not so much! consistency is key and staying positive, i know if i stress about it then so will she, so we go with the flow!

looking into some cloth trainers, jade is doing great with the poops, not a single dirty dipes since we started on that front, and it's helping clear her out as she was apparently bunged up a little, 5 poops in one day! pee's still need some work on the communication part, mostly i catch them through persistence and vigilance not her signalling as she signals after the fact! but we are working on it and having fun, she pee'd in the big potty yest and thought it was fun! picked up some books from the recommended list here and found some great design your own cloth ones at the EC store for a good price. slow and surely wins the race and it's not about getting her trained right now as much as it is about teaching her to learn her own cues and what to do about it. the rest will follow on it's own!

That sounds like an awesome start to her EC journey!! Evie started at about 6 mths, so just a little before your DD, and she was not that great with pees to start. Yay Jade!!

Welcome!

I live in Edmonton too!

I've started from birth with my 3, and my second (Ivy) started refusing at 6mo! It looks like you are off to a great start. Keep it up, and mostly, don't stress about it. We all have our off days, or weeks, or for Ivy 7 months... then it just clicked again!

thanks for the encouragement ladies!! pees are still an issue with knowing i think since she's so used to the diaper now, but we have poops down to a science! sara, dh wants to know how the heck you do this with more than one!! lol! yay edmonton mom!

I do it when I can. With Ivy being 18.5mo, she is refusing to wear a diaper a lot of the time (or insisting that I put her in one), so it's "simply" a matter of catching her and making sure she goes on the potty (and stays off the rugs and furniture - she peed in her booster seat the other night - and on the chair under it. Ugh.

As for the little one (2.5mo), I take him as often as I can (priority usually), and particularly at night and in the morning. For some reason I'm not so concerned about pees as I used to be, it's the poops that I'm focusing on. I guess I decided that I prefer changing pee diapers to poopy ones...

I guess I should also say that Ivy is showing that if we could focus on it seriously, we could probably toilet train her very quickly. She is using the potty by herself a lot. In fact, this morning she was getting very annoyed at me about food when she suddenly stopped mid-scream, walked over to her potty, had a huge pee, and then came back wanting what I was trying to give her. I think it suddenly struck her that the reason she was so annoyed was that she had to pee so badly! Can't toilet train before 2? Don't tell Ivy that!

Sarah, that is too cute! At the beginning, Evie used to go into a huge panic and run around the room saying "pee! pee!" (or poo! poo!, depending on what it was). Evie is finally doing everything potty-related by herself.

Mara, Evie totally took a long time to be aware of her pees, and took even longer to get to a stage where she would actually tell me. And she started at 6 mths. There will be good days and bad days, but never give up, just take it easy when it's not working out that day. Jade might be reliable on her pees soon, or may take a little longer, but once it happens, it will happen fast!

yay i can't wait for her to be more independent on the potty front! although at the same time i can!

doing okay the last couple days, teething is starting again so been a little lax on catching the pees, and this morning *i'm so proud of her* she only let out half a poop while trying to get my attention before we both got up, then let the rest out the second her butt touched potty!! it's been over a week and it's the first poop to touch diaper since! thinking the next couple days may be rough as we are going some outings in the moby and i'm not quite ready to ec in public with her, it's still an *us* thing. plus she prefers booby to poop so i let her have that comfort for now, will transition to a sippy at a later date.
lol as i was typing this she came up to me for a potty!! just when you think you have things figured out they go and surprise you!

breakthrough this morning!! took off her wet diaper and made a lot of icky noises and the pee cue and then put it on top off the toilet (beside her potty) and then when she got mad about having to put a new diaper on i told her that she had to keep wearing them until all the pee went into the potty and pointed to the wet diaper. i totally don't know if she understood any of it but the very next pee she signalled, held it, grabbed my hands and ran to pee in the potty!! it's been a while since she's done that with pee so i'm hoping that the teething pause is off again and she can get some more practice! poo's are still a potty only deal now! think i need to bring a bucket for on the road poops as she held it on sat (we had a diaper day due to an outing) and wouldn't let go till sunday morning even though she really needed too. Sad live and learn momma!

arg, i hate how development stuff and environmental stuff can set things back. jade was doing really well, we had a couple days of only 2 wet diapers all day, then back to poop only, then yest missed two of her three poops Sad poor little thing has too many things going on and yet she is still trying, she signals and we run and she sits and sits and sits and then gets frustrated so i take her off and we 'take a break, we'll try again later hunny'. right now she is teething (still, why must they take so long to come out) and learning a new trick (she took three independent steps the other day!) and since the weather change seems a little constipated, i need to get her drinking more water (right now she will only drink about 1/2 cup and lots of little booby snacks, trying to wean off the snacks so that she gets more water and less 'food' when all she needs is a drink) she's waking in the night again two or three times a night and half the time she fusses about her diaper and within minutes it's wet or dirty so i've been trying to get her on the potty in time, unfortunately mommy is getting woken up every 1 1/2 hours or so and it makes it hard to get up fast!
sa for little trainers (for when she gets back on track) i have a friend through my momstown group local that sells cloth online and she has agreed to look into the smaller sized trainers since she doesn't yet carry any of them!! woohoo, bugs EC might be able to help out a local mom that's starting her business, i love it when that happens! well that's about it for now. cheers to more water for both of us and many more successes!

I'm impressed! 3 independent steps and she's not 8 months old yet? WOAH!

As for the mistakes and lack of sleep... Oy, back to 1.5 hours at a time. I truly feel for you. I've decided that my sleep is more important these days.

thanks yeah we are kinda going with the pause and letting her work on the other stuff, i really didn't miss not having to scrape her whole butt though! it was nice to use the potty!

so it's been a bit but i thought i would share what's been going on. potty pause is what's been up! lol! two new teeth, a bunch of new sounds, and today, walking independently (no couch or anything!) added to all the hubbub of the holidays and i am really hoping that she gets back on track soon. there have been a few times that she has signalled and i got the dirtiest looks when i changed her in the living room at my dad's (we switched diaper station to the bathroom for the association)! she is starting to really get the hang of things though as she will go to the bathroom and goes straight for the big potty saying 'pah-pah' but she just won't go on it, so we follow her lead and wait! hope everyone had a great and successful holidays!

okay that was a longer pause than i anticipated but it seems like it's normal (thank you to all the wonderful ladies who post here!!) today she told me potty and pooped in the potty! that's one today, crossing fingers for more, she runs and is starting to talk more and getting better at feeding herself (learning the fork) so hopefully enough things have progressed to work on this some more! YAY!!

woohoo! we had a pee in the potty!! this has been the big 'lesson' for her with ec, poop's are pretty easy, pee's take a little more attention to catch and teach. she is walking now and has started going to the bathroom and banging on the toilet and potty and then uses the potty! so proud of her that it's starting back up again! i have the pink pull up s and keep telling her that she can have them (she's fascinated with them!) when she uses the potty more, she looks at me like 'aw mom, fine' sulking! now to get her to stop looking at me with panic on her face and signal me earlier! she's having to go faster than she is aware and she gets mad! lol, i love it, progress!

Sorry been so busy with other things (mainly, sick, busy with work, busy with Evie, busy with Christmas, etc etc), but I read through the entire thread. She is doing awesome! Potty pauses are pretty natural though, and hers doesn't seem very long...altho when they happen they feel like they happen FOREVER!!

I find with EC (as you have since found), she never forgets much of what she learned before, just a reminder or back on potty routine, and she gets back to it so quick!

break through today... she told daddy she had to go!! and went pee !!! no poops today but she's really gassy and keeps thinking she has to poop, at least she's letting us know she thinks so! onward and upward!!

Yay Jade!! That's a huge breakthrough, taking her own initiative. Evie took the longest time to get this milestone.

I had to laugh about her being gassy and thinking she needs to poop, Evie was totally like this for a long time. We would rush her so many extra times to the potty only to realize it was just gas. I think DH actually talked to her the difference between gas and poop....I recall it took a while before she understood. She will actually tell us now if it's gas or poop...and usually she is right.

That's so awesome that she is doing so well!

wow, well it seems like it's been forever, and we have been in a very VERY long pause. largely momma's fault, she hasn't been interested and i haven't had the energy to keep it up. bunch of new teeth, and we bought a house, major stress on the last one as it took 4 weeks from thinking about it, to keys in hand. then it's been almost 4 weeks of moving in.
she still grasps the concept of the potty, when we go she will hand us the wipes (or toilet paper if she can reach it!) and when we flush she takes her potty apart and hands it to us to clean, same thing all around when she needs a diaper. she's just been so go go go lately that she doesn't think about it till it's too late, then tells us and will sit for a minute then lay down for a diaper Sad hoping to get things back on track soon now that things are settling in and the only teething left is the last remnants of each molar to come out (four points, waiting on the middle part) and the canines. those dang molars have thrown everything off the last few months though.

so it seems that the potty is no longer an evil monster again!! shes still signing after she's gone most of the time, but at least she remembers the concept without prompting! she has started getting better and better about sitting on the potty and remembers that it sings when mommy puts her hand under it, so now i tell her that it doesn't work without pee or poo and just tap my hand under, she seems upset but gets it! the last couple days have been interesting as 'dolly' now has to use the potty and get wipes and lay down for a diaper. i keep showing her that dolly is a big girl and doesn't need a diaper, then jade will sit on the potty with her clothes on! tried some outside bare bum time to help with potty, i guess most kids don't like the wet leg thing so they are more inclined to use the potty... jade loves it Sad she also loves the freezing cold hose water too Sad so much for that method!! i am pulling out the pink princess trainers again and using them as an incentive to use the potty, i tell her one whole day in the potty and she can wear them, it worked well last time, we shall see!

WOOHOO!!!! okay ladies i need help! tips tricks whatever you've got!
jades almost 15 months old, she can run through the whole potty ritual if we say we have to potty, she knows the ritual for herself but will only tell us after she's gone and then does the whole routine. last night she decided that she didn't want diapers anymore!!! :woohoo: unfortunately she still won't go on the potty. we've tried all the encouragement (clapping, taking, showing her us going and clapping and such) moved the potty, let her pick a spot to move the potty, reminded in a 'scolding' tone that you don't potty on the floor, tried pull ups, tried just pants (she hates wet pants but still no change) she is being adamant that she doesn't need her diapers, has even started showing us that she can pull her pants up and down!!!
HELP!!! not sure what to do next other than to stock up on laundry soap and towels and keep doing what we are doing, it's only been two days (few hours last night then this afternoon again) so i have a ton of hope!!! so happy!!!

I have used timing off and on Evie's entire EC "adventure" as necessary. It's so common for them to have a potty pause (sort of), b/c she is so focussed on doing something else (usually playing). You can also try keeping special toys or activities for just potty time...but I found it doesn't work so well b/c then they want to use the potty ALL the time for the activity!

yeah timing has been one that's been hard so far, she'll pee three times in 30 min then nothing for 3-4 hours but it's kinda random, we've been just asking her every half hour or so and taking her in whenever we go and sitting her down. toys become playtime like you said! sometimes a book works, distracts her long enough to sit there till she goes (and relaxes!) but sometimes not so much. she's been doing lots lately, jumping and climbing and feeding herself with utensils (not well but learning!LOL!) and talking is on the rise again. plus cutting the last one year teeth, those nasty canines (two out two to go molars already through).
will keep on with the timing, maybe going to try letting her play with the tub toys, they are already there and not for 'all the time' play? i'll let you ladies know how that works! thanks! keep the idea coming!!!
yest she went 4 hours without a diaper and two wet pants Sad poor girl wants this now but isn't quite getting that stubborn is counter productive! lol!

At her age, I had put DS into undies, with Pullups over top. He felt like he was wearing undies, but we did not have the mess.
In addition, when ever her peed in the pot, he got a soft perpermint candy that he Loves. My mom use to pay me with a smartie.

Hmm! i like that idea about undies under a pull up! we've started using stickers, it seems to be catching on very slowly but she likes the idea!

update: so i now know that she CAN hold it! she's being sooo stubborn with this, will sit for up to an hour (i do not do this often as i know it's not good for anyone!) but then pee within minutes of getting up, pants, diaper, or otherwise. trying to figure out why she is choosing not to use it when she knows all the details and the rewards? time will tell i suppose, trying very hard not to make it a power struggle and force her while still strongly encouraging this. i'm sick of diapers!

well that didn't work! i think it's official and i need to resign myself to her stubbornness! she just doesn't care if she's wet or cold or anything, she is literally proving that this is something she will do when she's damn good and ready! lol! going to keep on just doing what we're doing, listening to her cues and all the good stuff and hope that she will 'want' to soon! thanks for the tips ladies, i'll let you know how it goes!

Ahh, shoot! I'm no help - that's when Ivy started really going to the toilet on her own! Her stubbornness was between 6mo and 14mo!

I would suggest doing just what you said - keep doing what you are doing and don't push it for a while. She knows what it feels like to pee/poop so she'll decide to stop pretty soon. Soon may mean several months, though! When Ivy was 17mo is when we started putting her in panties instead of removing a cloth diaper for her to pee...

WOOHOO!!! :woohoo:

okay i mean the actual thing not the doing! DO NOT LOOSE THAT CUP! the one that looks like it should be for boys only that usually comes off. SERIOUSLY! jade has distance that would shame her daddy! lol!! had to dig out the soaker pads from my maternity days to put under it! and i can't find the cup to save my life. there's one place it might be but i cant get at it right now and for 1.47$ replacement the s/h is $10

Blum 3BiggrinBlum 3 this morning jade requested her panties (ie refused her diaper and went to the sock and panty drawer) we've been doing an hour a day of panty time for about three days now and this morning that was it, she was not having the diaper, i even tried a pull up and that was a NO!! more than a few messes but as long as you catch her as soon as she starts and say 'oh no' she'd stop and run, the rest of the time she'd stop herself and run and there was a few of the big pees that were no mess at all! i think she's just so used to letting it dribble in the diaper lately. added like twelve stickers this morning! she kept drinking juice and water (chugging it!) then she'd have to pee again, it was so cute! normally not this frequent. can't wait to never see diapers again and i can see there is a light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

we are officially having more stickers go out than undies getting dirty!!! anywhere from 1/2 hour to 5 hours each morning of panty time! her request! so proud of her jump in progress!!! today we are at 7 stickers and only 3 pairs of panties!!!

well the good days are outnumbering the bad ones so yay! she is still wanting panty time every single day, some days there are more messes than not, but we trudge on with smiles and stickers! she is working hard on holding it… sometimes a good thing, except when we have figured out that she's doing it to get more stickers! ROFL she'll sit and watch our faces to see when we are really proud then stop and get up and do the 'oooh mommy look what i did' dance. then 5 min later she has to go again! we've stared making her sit an extra minute or two, 'take deep breathes and make sure it's all out' before she's allowed a sticker. these kids are WAY smarter than we give credit sometimes!

YAY - glad she's made a turn around. That's actually a pretty quick turnaround. Any idea why she did a bit of regressing?

and we're slowing down again! she knows it all, she can do it all, she's shown that she's perfectly capable of telling us, holding it and going. now we wait as she resets her daily routine again.

as for the regressing, i can only think it's the dang canines, the bottom two are the only teeth left until the two year molars and there is some crowding already (ped dentist booked for nov) so i now they are really bugging her. also this week has been extremely busy but she did keep telling us potty and would sit on the public toilets (wiped down eeewww!) she didn't do anything but she tried and that's my biggy! hoping to get back on track over the weekend with more normal routines again.

LOL anyone else get to the point of "OMG JUST DO IT ALREADY" when they can show everything that they can do it but they just won't!!! jade has now progressed to the point where she is telling us in public, going in public (most times when she says it) saying it at home and not even waiting for us anymore, she says it on the run to the bathroom. here's the most frustrating part… still having a dirty diaper, barely using the potty (ie telling us, using her diaper then sitting on the potty) and she can now set out her diaper and sit on it herself perfectly lined up, she almost doesn't need us to help change her bum. my goodness child at 17 months if you can do all that then why on earth won't you just use the potty! lol!!!!! pulling hair out but in a funny, i know she'll just do it one day kinda way!

*sigh* !! lol well panty time seems to be part of our routine now unless she specifically asks for a diaper or pull up. usually means about 2-3 hours in the morning and occasionally some time in the afternoon. it looks like the biggest problem is identifying that she has to pee. most of the catches are when she has at least dribbled a little, or i ask her first. we even tried the cold sensation pull ups and they didn't do anything. so we still work on asking her lots when we need to go and trying to keep tabs on it. stickers are now 'tell us, clean panties/diaper,and going on the potty' that seems to be slowly catching on and she is getting more and more proud of clean/dry 'bums' thinking this will be a typical jade thing where one day out of the blue she just gets it! same with walking, talking and just about everything else she's done so far! lol!! for now, its moving forward, we have a folding potty for outings that she is getting better with and i am looking forward to our halloween trip when she gets to see her cousin using the potty! maybe they can train each other! lol!!!

all right i need some sanity! about 4 days ago i decided that's it NO MORE DIAPERS except for nap and bedtime. she's been doing pretty good, still has accidents but more gets in the potty than the floor. we do treats for good potty and a pat on the butt for a blatant mess (pee on something and don't say anything) and the potty clock to eliminate the anxiety of constantly being asked! so far so good but i need to know, at 19 months has anyone else tried this, and how long did it take before clean panties became a norm instead of little dribbles in the panties before hitting the potty? i've been telling myself at least two weeks before she gets into the routine and norm of no diapers and having to go on the potty to keep panties dry. trying to stay strong, trying soooo hard not to give in to my desire to just put another dang diaper on so i can have a break, but my sanity is starting to waver! lol!

LOL it's the old if you whine loud enough! today, 3 pairs of panties total, 2 this am while sitting on my lap, she told me then ran and couldn't hold it and run, small dribbles, then tonights was just supper spills and drool otherwise it would still be clean (still getting changed though since she wore them ALL DAY!!) I SEE THE LIGHT! thanks to all who have supported me/us and who have put up with my rants and babbles, i know we are not done yet but sooo close! next stop, sleep time diapers, she is still way to inconsistent with cleanliness of these.

Yay for dry all day!
In my case, I think Juliet will be clean through the night before the day. She is almost consistantly waking up dry in the morning. I regularly send her to daycare with the same diaper she spent the night in.

that's great, i can't wait for the sleep time dryness to be more consistent, we're thinking after christmas we're going to try waking her for potty, but right now it's right before she wakes up (still warm) and if she's up she can't get back to sleep Sad
we have break through! independent potty! was making her sandwich for lunch, she yelled potty and by the time i got to the bathroom she was already going pee on the potty with panties down! all by herself!!! the average seems to be about 3-4 accidents throughout the day and at least 1-2 are usually poops that she thinks are toots. she's getting better with this though now and can stop before it's all out, but it still leaves gross panties, thank goodness for owning the washing machine now!

YAY she's back to almost catching poops all the time now, she's holding it in public and keeping pull ups clean! still averaging 2-3 dirty panties during the day but no more floor messes unless she's really tired and/or we are busy with something else and she wants attention. although she's starting to show more and more willingness to take herself potty and just wait for us to catch up to her, usually resulting in wet panties but no messes otherwise! YAY! not sure when we are going to start sleep training but def after holidays are over with. any thoughts, tips or suggestions on this front are welcome to get my brain in gear for it. the only thing right now that i'm really not looking forward to is outings with just panties, it's not always easy to get to a potty in time and it's way too cold to bring a portable for outside (we walk/bus) still a little later than i was hoping for with her potty habits but still very proud of her success so far! especially when i see 4 year olds still in diapers (not even pull ups) and postponing preschool because of it.

Yay for progres!!
With DS, I use to put a Pullup over his undies. It felt like he was wearing cloth, but there was backup incase of an accident.

still thinking about the pull up over panties, right now she hates the idea of diapers or pull ups! she wants this now too! so the other day we went to my dads and she spent the WHOLE day in panties! even for nap! mind you i was laying down with her and got her up to potty before she was actually awake but still! and NO MESSES!!! 3 steps forward one step back, the next day had 2 messes, one was a half poop (the rest made it to the potty) and we are day two trying nap with just panties and the door open. she hasn't quite figured out she can get out of bed still and i don't even know where that idea came from, we've never actually done the 'back into bed' lecture!yest didn't work, she peed the bed, but i figure a few days of that and she'll get it quick! 20 months old and we are almost daytime trained!!! so happy, especially since grandma just offered to help buy a big double mattress set for her on the boxing day sales instead of waiting till april! she's still in the converted crib aka plastic mattress!!
