Sarahsunshine's (Sarah's) Trail...

Well, I thought I'd start one out - if anything to keep track for myseld of how things are going.

Baby #2 (as yet unnamed) was born at 5:14am on May 3. She weighed 7lb 3oz, and is doing great.

We planned to EC from birth, and so far we have been putting her in cloth diapers and taking her to the sink when we can or feel that she may need to go.

So far, I caught (if I remember correctly):
May 4: I didn't try. I was too tired and sore with after pains.
May 5: 1 poop (meconium/BM), 1 pee. But that's all she did that day!
May 6: 4 pees, 1 breast milk poop!
May 7: 1 pee (first thing in the morning), DH caught one in the evening!
May 8: 5 pees, 1 poop!
May 10: > 4 pees (can't remember and DH doesn't report), 4 poops (DH caught 2)!!!!

I've noticed that it's much harder to tell if Baby girl has to pee. Reed always got a little pee-on, and then he'd always poop when he peed making it super easy. Maybe that will start now that she is on BM poops? We'll see.

Hey, we've already saved on diapers!!

Today started out with baby and I fighting over breastfeeding for a couple hours between 12:30 and 3:30am. After we got some sleep, I decided that baby's squeekiness during her sleep was due to her having to pee or poop. I got up, turned the hot tap on (it takes a while to get warm), and then took baby's dry, clean diaper off. I took her to the sink and she peed!!!!

I did the same about 1.5 hours later and it worked - again! And again!!!!

3 PEES caught before 10am!!!! WOOHOO!

And then we had some misses... BUT we still caught a big poop later on too, and at least 1 more pee - so that makes 5 pees and 1 poop caught today!!!! At least!

OH now I get what you mean by trail. This is a cool idea! Smile Maybe I'll start one soon, too. Smile

Glad it's going well so far! I'm hoping to EC baby #2 from birth too. Though not sure how it will go with a 1 year old. Wink But it would be great to be able to just dump the meconium down the toilet hehe.

I can't wait to hear her name. Even though J came early I'm actually kind of hoping Baby #2 comes on our due date too. Biggrin

Well, this weekend was busy but has some good surprises EC-wise!

Biggest surprise - We caught 4 (YES 1-2-3-4!!!) poops yesterday!!! I caught 2, and DH caught 2! I think she's getting the hang of pooping in the sink - or we ae getting better at reading her schedule!

She is harder to read than Reed was. As much as she is a better sleeper, and she gets restless if she has to go, about half the time she just pees without waking me up (we co-sleep). Is this because I'm sleeping more soundly, or because she doesn't make any noise? Probably a combination of both. It may make things a little harder later, but I am totally loving being able to sleep 2-5 hours at a time! With Reed I swear he pooped about 20 times a day and woke up every 20-45 minutes for that first month and a half!

Now, I rarely have to wake DH for him to take her to the bathroom at night because 2-3 times a night is no big deal. I hope it stays this way!

Morning note:

She squawked at 2am - so I took her to the sink. She peed and pooped! Biggrin

Repeat at 4am! BiggrinBiggrin

Wet diaper at 7am... Sad

Big fart at 10am... took her to the sink, and she had a HUGE poop and pee! BiggrinBiggrinBiggrin I guess she's cured of my milk let-down trying to drown her! No worries about dry diapers here!

We've been really busy lately - even moreso than usual!

Friday night we went up to Lesset Slave Lake area and stayed for 3 nights (long weekend). We didn't camp out, but stayed on the floor of an old school house - DSS got the couch. We used pot (true infant potty training!) for most pees/poops since there was no plumbing. We used a combo of cloth/disposibles - carrying aroung soiled diapers when there's no opportunity to wash them for 4 days just doesn't do well for us, and no diapers just isn't an option.

DH got really frustrated the first morning because he was trying to be helpful and didn't hold Baby Girl over the pot long enough. He then walked across the room to where the diapers were and she pooped on the rug (after peeing on his shirt). He had had enough and he'd only just got out of bed! A well, we all have our days!

As it turned out, it worked fine the rest of the weekend. Generally nights are more successful than daytimes - and we catch most pees and poops at night (a few wet nappies but we have had very few poopy ones since last week).

During the day is another story though. Either BG is distracted more, or we are... Actually, I've decided that DH is better at reading her during the day than I am, but maybe it's just that when he does decided to pitch in that he does it right away. I've just been tired lately and not so quick to react... I figure that at least if we are catching some, we are doing well.

I've also noticed that BG screams like a banshee BEFORE she pees - but only during the day. This is great as a cue, but she hasn't quite figured out that if we are holding her over the sink, she can pee without screaming. In fact, she tends to scream and hold it, then I put her on our bed/changing pad and she pees there. hmmm... I wonder what the best way to proceed is. I don't really want her to correlate screaming with the place of elimination... Any ideas? Currently, if she starts screaming I'll stop holding her over hte sink and either hold her or put her on the change pad...

A quick update...

BG is currently named Ivy...

As for EC, we have had a breakthrough this week! Saturday somethng clicked and we haven't had a poopy diaper since then (wet farts don't count)! That is duraing the Day OR night!!!

Also, in terms of pees, we get a couple wet diapers each day, but she's started being VERY demanding if she has to pee - as in she'll cry her loudest if you try to ignore her and she has to go (most of the time). Case in point, we've had 2 wet diapers today (since last night). Also, I've got to a point where I'm fairly comfortable taking cloth diapers if we go out for a while because she'll actually communicate she has to go and usually hold it until we get to a place to pee (a tree on Sunday, the toilet at a friend's house, our sink).

I think I'm goint to have to tell the diaper service to cut back on diapers next week... we still had 25/40 form-fitted diapers unused when they came to pick them up this week! And I wasn't trying that hard to make a dent in it!

Woohoo!!!

We were gone for a couple days so I thought that I'd give an update...

Friday we had our first diaper poop since the previous saturday (6 days!!!). To be fair, it was only 1/3 of a poop - as soon as the first farts were heard, I dashed to the bathroom and caught the rest there!

It seems that sometime in the last week Ivy has started pooping once/day instead of 6-8... makes catching poops a little easier!

We spent the weekend away (sat-mon evening) and used a combination disposable/cloth while we were gone. Disposables during the day, cloth at night.

Saturday night was terrible. I think Ivy was up every 30mins/hour throughout the night. I was exhausted Sunday. The way the bed is set up, though, only one person can get up to hold Ivy over the pot (the other person is stuck against the book cases on 3 sides - and it's just a lumpy futon on the floor) so I couldn't even draft DH to help! grrr...

Sunday noght, however, was pretty good. She only woke up twice! Maybe part of that was because we kept her awake for an hour or so before going to bed?

Another observation I have is that Ivy has to pee about 3-10 times in the hour after she wakes up in the morning. Each pee is about half a teaspoon's worth. Why can't she hold it and just have one big pee at that time? I wonder... Has anyone else found that?

I do remember when we started with J at 3 months that he would go around every 10-20 min at 3 months. I wonder if it is because their bladders are still so little when they are newborns? No idea though!

Wow, it's been a while...

We went camping for about 10 days, slept in tent and sleepingbag, resorted to disposible diapers, and generally disregarded the "hard core" EC stuff for about 2 weeks. In the tent, I got a ziplock box and lid, and called it her "toilet". If she got really squirmy (around 4-5am) I would unzip the sleeping bag, put a flat diaper down, get the "toilet" from the door of the tent, open it, and hold Ivy over the container. She usually peed. Occasionally she pooped (but she hasn't been doing that often.. I think she was dehydrated). I'd do the same when I got up. During the day I'd periodically take her diaper off and offer her a chance to pee. No particular schedule or reading cues, just "I have time", or "I haven't a clue why she'sd upset... maybe she has to pee?".

The upshot?

We came home and put the cloth diapers on. She yelled if I woke her up to pee. She woke and yelled bloody murder if she has to pee and I don't take her... Seems I get yelled at no matter what.

During the day we have lots of misses, but we also get lots of catched. We're not stressing about it. We have about 24 diapers and only wash them every week. We go through them slowly enough that if we just hang them on the side of the bed, they dry out fast and we can use them again. Baby pee is just not smelly at all - at least I can say she's well hydrated!

How is she different from Reed? She pees less often at night. 1-2 times. She wakes up and is hungry, but not needing to pee. She can go up to 6 hours dry! Reed had to pee every 2-3 hours a night at this age I think.

Also, she seems to pee less often in General. Maybe she just has a bigger bladder?

Anyway, I don't have any EC photos yet... maybe in a bit?

Another great thing is that DH is now going to be off work for July, so we can work together and he can help out more. He's been home most of the last week and spent more time with her then than since she was born. He's enjoying it, so is she, and so am I!

It's been a while again, but I thought I'd update...

WE've been doing morning and nightime EC relatively religiously, but daytime is another matter. I try, I miss, I get distracted, I forget. Shoot! Plus she's teething right now and so she usedto have a big poop in the morning, and now she's runny, and unpredictable. And she's decided that she doesn't like to go to the bathroom when I'm holding her... And she HATES the potty... So, I hope it's a phase that will go away. Maybe next week I'll start with the hourly bathroom thing again, just to see if she has a new potty schedule. She still pees on command, though, do I'm hoping things will be easier in a bit when she pees and poops less often.

She's using the potty! to pee, at least! YAY! I tried her on it on Saturday morning for her morning pee and she just did it!

I'm so glad because she's starting to get a little heavy!

Update!

Ivy’s grown, and grown, and is still doing quite well with the EC. I must say that her parents are probably the biggest slackers in the effort Sad .

Anyway, there was definitely a correlation between getting her first tooth, and lots of misses. It also might have had something to do with Christmas and visitors for the same week…

We also found that catch number decreased when she figured out how to crawl. She’s also been a little on the runny side, lately, and not as regular as she used to be (1st thing in the morning and nothing else). Sometimes she has even had a large poop in the morning and several more throughout the day. She catches us by surprise on those – though we do catch a lot of them when we hear her fart.

The positive side is, though, that now that she is 8months old, she’s staring to pee way less often, and she is down to peeing only 0-1 time at night. Generally I take her to pee at about 2-3am, but two days this week, she was dry in the morning and I slept through it! On the other hand, if I wait too long (2 minutes) after she wakes up at 7-8am, then she wets herself (very thoroughly), so I have to be a little quicker at waking myself up and getting her to the potty.

She’s also started to use the potty! In fact, she tends to scream many times when we hold her, but accepts the potty. She’s even pooped on it a couple times, but I still find it easier to hold her over the sink for the poops. It’s easier for me to tell if she’s completely done.

Anyway, yesterday, she learned how to wave by folding her fingers separately from her palm! YAY Ivy!

Aww sounds like she is doing so well! Do you have any potty pictures yet? Interesting that teething and crawling caused misses, I'll have to keep an eye out for that!

Side note: do you mind if I post about EC on some of the birth boards? I know you're the mod do I don't want to step on toes, but would love to see this board more active!

Hooray for Ivy!! Evie does the hand wave but does not know how to sign potty or do it consistently.

Jessica, I found anytime there was a developmental milestone about to be achieved, Evie was not so good about the potty and would have misses. It's like she got distracted and isn't very focussed on communicating (if any).

We pretty much gave up on Ivy and EC for a good while. She was just so angry with us whenever we took her close to the bathroom. Then when we went camping for 3 weeks, we used disposables. When we came back we just didn’t bother taking her to the toilet until a week later when someone started a thread about pottying. I think she must have heard about it somehow, because since Friday she’s had a completely different attitude about the bathroom. Maybe a month of completely ignoring it has helped?

- Instead of screaming bloody murder at the mere suggestion of it, Ivy will walk to the bathroom by herself! This is such a relief, and I hadn’t realized how stressful it was to change her until she’s been perfectly happy to be washed off this weekend!
- She’s peed in the toilet 7 times (at least) over the weekend.
- I think she even pooped once!
- she’ll sit on the potty and say “sssssss”, but she hasn’t used it. She seems to prefer the toilet insert.

Good job, Ivy!! Looks like she was just waiting to be more independent to use the insert or potty.

That's so funny, once Evie started using the insert regularly at 13 mths or so, she is no longer into using the potty. She's never had an issue with the potty but timing makes me think it's an age thing?

Maybe. Reed was the same way. After seeing a toilet insert and using it at the day home, he would never uset the potty... but then he never liked the potty much to begin with so I can't really count that either.

Now it's Thursday evening, and Ivy just had a HUGE pee on the toilet! That makes it about a week of using the toilet without a fuss!!! Whooppeeee!!!!

Well, the new baby, Leo, is just over 6 weeks. We had a rough start EC-wise because I was in a bad way for the first week. Then he wouldn't eat, and we all got 2 separate colds... He's started eating well just in the last week and a half, and EC is settling down (easier when you know he has to poop!). We periodically get to the bathroom before he soils his diaper, but usually he's peed a little bit and has saved most of the pee and poop for the bathroom. These days we miss about 1 real poop (of 5-6) each day (I don't count wet farts).

We are using a cloth diaper service and have been getting 45 diapers each week. Last week we had 12 left clean, so that means we use only 33 diapers... Pretty good if you ask me!

As for Ivy, I think she's ready to toilet train, but I don't have time with feeding Leo constantly and taking him to the bathroom. Ivy is going to the bathroom very well at the day home, but here she has other things on her mind. She still pees several times a day on the potty, and poops twice a day at relatively regular times, but she just plain refuses to go to the potty to do it sometimes. As with her refusing when she was 6mo, there's no point to force her (and couldn't anyway). I'm sure she'll be ready soon. She is going and getting diapers when she pees and bringing them to us!

Well, I found 2 pairs of DSS's old training pants - gerber type - and we tried them at the bdginning of the week because Ivy could take them on and off by herself. Tuesday evening was a huge success. But then I bought some new cloth diapers that are really cute (some of our old ones were falling apart and these were the only style in her size). and now all she wants to do is wear the new polka-dot diapers!!! Shoot! I hope they get old fast!

And she's going back and forth... a while ago she was dry at night. then she was peeing once, and DH kept her dry by taking her to the bathroom at midnight, and now she's peeing about 5 times a night and wakes up completely soaked... what's going on?

I'm told that lately Miss Ivy refuses to use her potty and the toilet insert. Instead, she's a BIG GIRL and wants to sit on the toilet like the adults do. Well fine, but a couple of times she has fallen in!!! LOL! Oh well, she'll figure it out soon. She can hang on to the tub to help prevent falls. We have a very cute photo of this, but maybe it isn't fair to post it...
She still feels that she must undress completely every time she uses the toilet. I wonder how long that will last?

Wow! That's pretty impressive! WTG Ivy!! Evie is still scared of falling in....hence toilet inserts at home, and when we go out, I sit behind her on the toilet. Except sometimes the toilet is just too darned small and I can't....then she gets upset and won't go. Talk about stress!

Last night, after being dressed in her diaper, diapercover and sweats, Ivy pulled off her pants, diaper cover and diaper, peed on the potty, then put just her pants back on. iI didn't keep track of her too much (figuring the pants would hold a bunch of pee), but she pulled the pants down and back up and used the potty every time!!! Dry pants when she went to bed and she stripped before dinner! WOOHOO! I know what I want for Christmas!

As for Leo, I just bought another dozen cloth dipes of our smaller size (we had about 12) knowing they were the right size because both Reed and Ivy grew out of them at about 5-6 months. Um... well... They are a tad on the tight side! Shoot! He could use Ivy's size right now probably. Oh well, I'm going to stretch at least a month out of them if I can!

He's doing pretty well, peeing and pooping in the sink. However, I'm overtired and can't put as much effort into it as I would like, or as much as I did with the other two at this age. Sleep.... need sleep.

It's been a while since I posted on this thread!

Ivy is pretty much toilet traines. She takes herself to the toilet mostly, though needs occasional reminding - especially in the morning. She's been dry the past two mornings - Yippee!

Leo we haven't been that intensely working on EC with. On the other hand, the past couple days have been a HUGE success. Leo is going on his 40th hour in the same dry diaper!!! I put him in a diaper in the evening on Wednesday, he was dry all night, I took him for a pee in the morning, then a poop. Put the same clean diaper back on. Then I went about the day. At around 10-11am, I realized that his diaper was still dry, so I took him to the bathroom and held him over the sink. He had a big long pee! And then again at aroun 1pm. Then I left him with the babysitter. DH came home 2.5 hours later, relieved the babysitter, and took Leo for another pee!!! We went to my hockey game, and put him in a disposable, that he never used. Then back in the same cloth diaper when we came home! He was again dry at night, and woke me up at about 6:20 and had a big pee. Then we went back to sleep for another hour. A big poop at aroun 7:45am, and he's out and about with DH now. We'll see how it goes! I'm so impressed.

WOOHOO! The greatest thing is that it's not that we were even trying terribly hard. It just happened!

Good Job Leo.
It seems that some days they just get in in their little minds to use the potty all day.

How long would you leave him in the same dry diaper?
I don't leave them on DD more than one day. I am always worried she might get a yeast infection or something.

With Evie, we've never had them on more than 24 hours for the same reason. We used CDs, but I think we probably would have done the same regardless if it was disposables/underwear/pullups.

WTG!!!! that's fantastic!!!
ita with the time frame of dry diaper. same idea as undies, no more than 24 hours (i think i remember a doc telling me once that's how long it takes the bacteria to culture in there? something like that)
