    Default Sophia and Evie's Trail

...not sure if I should really call it one, since I started this soooooooo late after we began EC. But here goes:

We started ECing her at 6 mths. I really never thought or knew about EC until after. What got us started was her.

We started solids at 6 mths, and within 3 days, she started getting a really bad rash...really, her first major diaper rash ever. It caused her so much pain that cleaning her bum made her cry....made me cry too. Anyways, one day, DH was changing her overnite diaper to a regular diaper. He got a clean diaper under her, looked away for a moment to do something (get a wipe? not sure...) and when he looked back, she pooped in the nice clean diaper. So he had to change her diaper again.

When did this again the next morning, DH came and told me that he believed she was actually holding her poop until a clean diaper was laid under her. And after much discussion, we thought, well, if she can hold her poop for a clean diaper...she can hold her poop for the potty!!! So we pottied her the next morning. She was upset at first since she could barely sit up on her own, never mind on a potty, so we held her upright and wouldn't let her move. But she pooped right away. And we tried again the next morning and she pooped in the potty instead of her diaper. 3 days after we started pottying her, her diaper rash disappeared completely. Once she realized that pooping in the potty and not her diaper caused her rash to disappear, she was very interested in using the pottying for poops, altho we didn't always catch each poop. But as she had just started solids and it was messing with her poops, we didn't expect much. But I believe about a month or so after, she began to get regular 2 poops a day: 1 first thing in the morning and the other after her 2nd nap, just before dinner. We got so good at catching her poops, I never had a dirty diaper for MONTHS. Only times she has pooped in her diaper was when she was sick and when her diet gets a bit too "fibre-rich". And she is so upset every time it happens.

Pees were tricky right from the start, she was ok with peeing in her diaper, so she wasn't motivated to let us know when she was about to pee. And her only signal was to go quiet...even then, it wasn't always consistent. Some days were worse than others. But over the days and weeks, she started getting pretty good about peeing 1st thing in the morning and sometimes after naps. We used training pants, and while it helped her get aware of her pees, it still didn't motivate her to tell us when she needed to pee.

She signed potty for the 1st time at 11 mths, but then rarely signed after that. Last month, she finally started signing and signalling a bit more reliably. Also, she has begun to stay dry during her meals (she used to always pee at some point while in the high chair). She will sometimes even hold her pee until I can get her on a potty. She still has accidents but they are a lot less, for sure. She still unfortunately relies on us to ask her if she needs to go to the potty; she doesn't initiate any communication about the potty with us.

    Our current "challenges" in EC:

    1. signing/signalling/communicating when she needs to go to the potty
    2. taking herself to the potty
    3. holding her pee during diaper free time until she goes on the potty
    4. initiating the communicate to need to use the potty

So I think that's all to the trail right now.

Neat! Thank for sharing! I think it's fine to still call it a trail!

My son actually never went to the potty on his own until recently. He is almost 20 months now. She will get there. And I actually still help my son; when he is too sleepy at night/first thing in the morning, I just hold him over a bowl. I wasn't good at reading his signals for pees before recently so only did EC part time and mainly went for the poos, but now he either just goes to the potty himself for those, or wakes up crying or making a fuss noise because he has to go but is too sleepy to get up. But he totally holds it for the potty.

Evie is 15 mths now, and has made great progress in these areas. She is telling us (tho not always consistently) when she needs to go potty...however, at the very least, she will tell us now when she has gone...and keep telling us until we change her diaper (with underwear we can tell right away).

Sometimes she will tell us she wants to go upstairs (to use the potty). She will even take us to the potty, altho this has only happened a couple of times so far.

She is getting better at holding her pee during diaper free time, but it's slow progress. There is usually one accident a day, sometimes two.

The big bonus tho is that she is now willing to use a toilet insert to pee and poop!!! We just tried it last week and then took the insert (as well as potty) with us to our MIL's out of town and she has been improving! So far, we just take her to the insert right after naps and waking up in the morning, when we know she *has* to go.

    YAY!

The toilet insert seems like such a huge step!

Where did you find underwear that fits? I’ve never been able to find any that doesn’t fall off instantly!

Yes, for us the toilet insert was a big step for Evie. We tried at 10 mths and she just wasn't comfortable using it. Now she is much better at using it. I found that at this age (15 mths), she is beginning to understand there is a whole process with regards to using the toilet and she get pretty involved. She asks for toilet paper now to "wipe" herself (altho really she is just shoving paper between her legs so that it falls into the toilet bowl!), she waves bye bye with me before we flush the toilet, points out the water going down the toilet, and we wash our hands together. She likes doing all that.

We bought 18 mth underwear from Walmart when Evie was 9-10 mths old and washed it in hot water cycle to shrink it. It was kinda big at first but it fits great now. We have 24 mth underwear on standby...but it's big for her right now of course.

I know there are specific brands of infant underwear you can order online if the Walmart ones don't work out, they have links at Diaper Free Baby: http://www.diaperfreebaby.org/supply...osition=118:94.

WOW!!! Ivy looks like a tall baby in your siggy!! What size does she wear??? Evie is pretty tall for her age, 15 mths and in size 2T already. 24 mths don't even fit her anymore: too short and too wide.

Um... Ivy wears anything from 3months to 24 months! She's a skinny kid so the 3month dress/pant outfits fit her perfectly as shirts and shorts! We have a very hard time finding things for her that aren't three times to wide and showing her belly button at the same time! I'm hoping she's added another pound or so this month... to break 18!

I'll take a look for underwear in 18mo size next time we go to Vol*D*mart (I hate that store and try to avoid it).

You will not believe how much DH hates that store too....but for the sake of his daughter, he's been there more times (like maybe 3) in the past year than he has the rest of his entire life.

After a bad day yesterday (poop in the pull-up...twice! 1st in a long time), she did great today.

But the newest achievement: she walked to her potty, sat on it and peed. All on her own. Yay!
