Breast to sippy cup
I am on the Feb 2011 board but have a question about BF. When the time comes I would like to wean my baby boy from the breast straight to a sippy cup, I want to skip the bottle stage!! Has anyone here done that, do you have any tips that worked, strategies to help make the transition easy for mom and baby????
If I have to leave DS he will eventually take BM out of a sippy cup. As long as it's held like a bottle. lol. He won't pick it up and tip it back. We do it this way because he refuses bottles completely. But he's very slow with it and doesn't get nearly as much out of it over 15 minutes as he would get out of me in 3 minutes. I read somewhere that the average for starting to use a sippy cup is 10 months, but it's not unusual for it to be after 1 year before they're interested in it. Of course I'm sure there's always that one kid who figured it out before 6 months!
DS will drink water out of a straw cup easily, but he's a mess with it. I do not consider it a good way to get him to take BM.
Other than when I'm gone from DS more than 3 hours, he doesn't get BM in it. I don't ever plan to switch him over to getting his BM through a sippy.
HTHs some. You've probably got awhile till the sippy cup age. :)
ETA: I did give DS an empty one to play with starting at 4 months. I later on added just a little bit of water to it. He did NOT like the water! It wasn't until the past few weeks that he decided water out of a straw sippy was okay.
My 14 mos old daughter has never had a bottle. We just started offering her cups of all sorts when we started giving her solids. She didn't really take to sippies at first, because I just don't think she had any clue about what a cup was and what the deal was with it. So we let her drink out of regular cups that we were holding, so she kind of got the idea of a cup in general. She will now drink out of straw sippy cups and loves them.
We tried a sippy around 3.5-4 months because DD was refusing to take a bottle and I had to go back to work. It didn't really work at that age but then again nothing did. She takes bottles now ... sort of. She will also drink from a sippy and she likes to drink from straws. If he's never had a bottle the sippy concept might take some time. I'd recommend introducing one now just to start the learning process. You can give it to him empty to play with or filled with a little water or EBM.
My kids both did better with the straw type sippy cups. I think I started letting them practice with water in the cups around 9mo. If you want to go straight to the sippy it should be no problem. Some people actually skip the sippy cup and move straight to an open cup. As a baby, I never drank from a bottle, and my mom never told me it was a problem at all.
My son never took a bottle either. In fact, he pretty much refused when we tried. He took a bit to get the hang of the sippy cup, but I found it helped to start by offering him water every time I gave him solids. Eventually he did get the hang of it. So we skipped the bottle stage entirely too!
This for us too...We started with straws and now she will drink out of any sippy.

He went right to a sippy cup. He didn't get it at first but after only a couple of days and a little help he started getting the idea. He will not take a straw yet but does great with a sippy.
So it might take a little trial and error. Don't be discouraged - it's all new to the babies! They do get it, just be patient and keep trying.
GL - I hope it's an easy transition for you.
Thank you very much ladies. I think I will start letting him play with a cup in the next couple of weeks and go from there!!! I appreciate all the advice and encouragement.
