Nicolas only takes one side at a time too, he never wants the second side. The past few days his nursing has been driving me crazy - he pulls, cries, unlatches then latches again. I feel like he is not getting enough milk but he still has plenty of wet/poopy diapers so I know he is, but is not fun to feed him. I am hoping this is a 3 month phase they go through?
That's b/c you're the super duper milk factory!! :) My poor Gabe goes through two breasts and then starts looking for a third! ha ha

So I bought some of those Breastflow bottles...and he HATES them. Like LOATHES them! I was so surprised! So we're back to fighting a bottle, but he'll at least eat eventually from the medela nipple or a Playtex nurser. I hate that he hardly eats when I'm working! :(
I envy you super milk producers! I'm lucky to get 5 oz from both sides these days.
Meagan, I wish I can send you the bottle I use for Aaron to try...not sure if you could purchase it online or not though. It's called Pigeon Wide Neck bottle with Peristaltic nipple...it's the best here to coax bubs into feeding from a bottle, the silicone teat is so soft and it flexes, and when you pull on it it realy looks like the way a real nipple goes iykwim! I suggested it to a friend here as her bubs was not taking a bottle at all and then I said try that one and her bubs took to it no probs!
Michelle - it sounds like you and I are boobie twins! With our little wrigglers and lower supply - ugh. I'm also with you on the super-milk-producers envy club! Ah well, at least I'm doing the best I can!
LOL Christina :) Aaron has taken to having a top up of formula everyday now, it's only about 90-120mls though at about the 3rd feed of the day and the rest is all BFing...my supply has increased slightly now af is settling down again for this month and because Aaron is waking at night again (he's not well and is teething, great combo!). He also has a dreamfeed at night now and I don't know if its coincidence because of illness and teething but when I started that, he began to wake so who knows? He's growing so I guess it's not all bad, I'm just terribly exhausted as of late (I get 8 hours of broken sleep)
I haven't read here in forever...so I just got caught up.
Count me in the floppy boob club! Total pencil test FAIL. I always feel like there is just NOTHING there, but, Beni latches on, dribbles milk here and there and doesn't act fussy so I go with it! She is obviously still getting plenty. Oh, and she always just eats off one side. The only exception is sometimes when I'm putting her down and she nurses for like 45 minutes on one side, my nipple might just start getting irritated, so then I'll switch her. But, she's never pulled off one side acting like she needs more.
She has also started with not so much the kicking, but the grabbing with her hands. She digs those little nails into my boob, and it HURTS! I make pain noises when she does it and tell her that it hurts me. One day she'll understand!
For those of you who are REALLY having an issue with this- have you thought about trying a nursing necklace? They're just big chunky STRONG necklaces that are meant to entertain a busy body baby while you're nursing. Gives baby something to look at, play with and pull on (safely) while feeding. Also, I find that Beni's preferred nursing position is laying down- she kneads my jelly belly with her feet sometimes when we're in that position (think of the way a cat will knead you- it's what kittens do while nursing to stimulate milk production). I'm sure for Beni it's just extra energy in her legs, but, when we're laying down, it's easier for her to kick around without really bothering me.
So, I'm just wondering- for those of you who feel that you just have nothing left in your boobs. How do you know? I'm not argueing (really!), but I just want to know how you know- given that you can't see inside your boob or your baby's mouth while s/he's eating. And since pumping is not always a good indicator (in fact, isn't it notoriously a bad indicator of what you really have?) of what you have... anyway... I just am interested to know how you know. When we first got to Angola, I had my first ever moment of fear about really having a supply dip- my boobs never get full like they did, don't even feel like they did pre-preg, etc. But, I just continued to feed on demand and go with the flow... and things seem to be fine. Anyway... I'm really just interested to see what you have to say about that.
I was thinking about those nursing necklaces but not sure as he gets older that he would just want to play with that instead of nurse?
I really think he had his growth spurt extend longer, like this whole 3rd month because now he seems pretty satisfied without as much formula top up in the afternoon. I wouldn't have a clue what he takes in with BFing, just that I know what I was making didn't satisfy his growth spurt (I pumped extra for several days in a row because he wasn't staying on long enough, he's never nursed to sleep or anything). I'm not pumping at night now so am getting up first thing when I'm so full and I express 4 oz off before he feeds...I fed him once this week when I was so full and he just brought up what seemed like everything! After he nurses I will express again and get another couple of oz and add it to what I did before...then I can top him up with that first (formula I offer later in the day if he wants it...during the growth spurt he needed it for sure). He hasnt been weighed since 2 months so will see this week at his checkup how he has gained.
I think the less full feeling comes with the fact he's at my breast every 2 hours during the day (he's back to sleeping 10+ hours at night), I always see him drinking but to 'empty' both sides takes 5 minutes so am not sure if he's getting enough because of that? I am still 'umming and ahhing' if I should hire a hospital pump to help with supply.
Another 4 days and not really a substantial poop to be seen (you know the ones where their pants get filled), he did a smallish one last night, not constipated or anything just the normal runny poop...he used to be so predictable!
mara: i hear you on the busy legs!!!! when i nurse luke laying down his legs just go and go. he kicks me in the belly constantly. even his toes are opening and closing. i tell my hubby that luke is trying to break up the belly fat so he can nurse it out :)
i rarely offer him both sides. i guess it never occurred to me, so i guess he must be content with one!
so im gunna be pumping like crazy the next few weeks. im going back to work 2 weeks earlier than expected, and since i have 12 hour shifts, luke is gunna need alot of milk. JenH posted a milk calculator to see how much babies need... it says luke needs 37oz a day! does that sound right? it seems like a ton. ive been freezing about 5 oz a day for a while, but i only have 60oz total in the freezer. ive upped the fengugreek and the last two days ive been able to pump 10oz on top of him nursing. no wonder my boobs are the size of my head
