Caffeine? (XP)

Does anyone else have babies who are really sensitive to caffeine? How long does it take the caffeine to leave your milk?

I had a cup of coffee out of desparation this morning (it was a LOOOONG night). I'm working and pumping today, so I'm planning on just dumping out my yields from at least the first two pumps. Should I dump out my third and final session as well - it will be about 4 hours after I finished my coffee?

I started drinking coffee again when DD was like 2 months. I noticed a slight effect for a few weeks but then she must have adjusted to it. Personally, I think dumping anything is going a bit overboard. Perhaps you can wait longer to pump that first time and by then it should be out of your system. How exactly is it affecting him?

Granted, I haven't tried it since he was about 5 weeks old and only 10.5 lbs or so...but it was CRAZY. I forgot and had about 4 ounces of Dr Pepper or Diet Coke (can't remember which) and he was a whiny, sad little mess for 14 hours...didn't fall asleep ONCE. It made me feel bad because I drank 2 cups of coffee a day while I was expecting him. Someone posted on the November board about how babies become much more tolerant with age - I'm going to try it again in a few weeks!

I know I am late to this post, but thought I would post for others to see. I know caffeine peaks in your system after an hour and takes about 6 hours for your body to totally eliminate it. I am not sure for how long it stays in your milk. Hopefully you were able to minimize your little guy's exposure Smile

My guy was sensitive to caffeine and garlic when he was first born... at about three months, I tried both again with no problems and have had no problems since. I actually drink way more caffeine than I need to but it doesn't affect him in the least. I drink lots of water though so maybe it dilutes it???

Just thought I'd jump in and update. I dumped that day. We receive some donor milk, since I'm a chronic low-supply Mama. We got a small donation from a lady who has caffeine - he couldn't do her milk either! Same effects! I really miss my lattes, so I'll try again when he's 6 months.
