Has anyone ever used fusidic acid eye drops while nursing ? My GP put me on them last week and I have been taking them since Tuesday, but I never thought to check to see if they were safe while nursing. I'm supposed to take 1 drop twice daily in one eye. I accidentally put 3 drops in this morning so I went online to see if it was a big deal to put more in. That's when I saw that some sites say that it is detected in breast milk and that the Dr. has to weigh the benefits vs the risks when using for nursing Mothers. My GP knows that I am breastfeeding. In fact we were at Joshua's 4 month checkup when she checked my eye and prescribed it for me. I didn't think to ask though if it was safe while nursing. Most sites say it is, but I'm just worried since I accidentally used more than I was supposed to this morning. The Dr's office is closed as is the health line. I don't know if I should keep nursing or put him on formula for the next 24 hrs. Any advice ?
I was actually able to speak with a pharmacist about it. She said that there isn't a lot of info on it, but from what she found it does make its way into the breastmilk but because it is taken through the eye the amount is negligible. She recommended that I continue taking it. I asked if it was bad that I accidentally put more drops in, and she said no. She said it will not affect him and to keep taking it. I did more research on it and apparently fusidic acid cream is given to nursing mothers who develop nipple infections, so I'm guessing this must be safe considering it would reach the baby a lot more on the nipple than it does when I put it in my eye. I decided to keep nursing but I won't take the drops any more just in case.
I also asked a fb friend who is a nurse and she also said that it was safe. She said tons of pg and bf'ing women have been on these drops for many yrs without any side effects to the baby.
