I've been BFing my daughter since birth. Because she was early, we used a nipple shield for the first 9-9.5 months. During that time, I could get her to latch without the shield occasionally but it took her a while to give it up.
When she gave up the shield at 9-9.5 months, everything was cake--she ate efficiently and I had barely any soreness. No cracking or anything that you would get with a newbie.
Recently though, my nipples have been awfully sore. At first I thought it was just from her teething as she has chomped a few times, but even when her latch is great it's bothersome. Today I noticed they were sore when I was adjusting my top to nurse her.
Anyone else dealt with this? I don't think I have an infection as my breasts seem fine otherwise.
Mine have been sore lately from all the popping on and off Teagan is doing. She's got a ton of teeth but has only bit me a handful of times. She does pull off and run her teeth over my nipple a lot. Ouch! There's not much I've been able to do other than trying to keep our nursing sessions as productive as possible, ie doing it in a quiet room with little distraction. Also, while I still nurse on demand, I try to gauge if the situation could be resolved using something other than my boob. When she was smaller (and less aggressive), boob solved everything. Now a toy swap or a cuddle session, or a change of scenery does the trick and I save the boob for when she's more likely to be nice about it.
