I've been breastfeeding for a little over eight months and in that time span I've managed to have six bouts of mastitis. Each episode seems to last longer and hit me harder with fevers in the 103-104 F range. I've already been on three rounds of antibiotics and missed work because of it. Besides making me feel downright miserable, it also makes it hard to care for DS. So I made the decision that once my fever stays down this time and I'm on the mend that I will wean him off nursing. He has no issues taking bottles or hypoallergenic formula since he sometimes does so when I don't have enough pumped milk saved for him while I'm at work. My biggest concern is how to go about the weaning process without ending up with my largest mastitis case ever. My PCP told me to eliminate a nursing session every few days starting with our latest night one and to only express to relieve pressure but not any more to stimulate milk making. Does anyone have any other tips that worked for them? I read about No More Milk tea, but my PCP did not seem very sold it, however I wonder it is worth a try. Probably wouldn't use the tea while I was still on antibiotics, but may later if it seemed like I was having engorgement issues.
I don't have any suggestions for you, but here's some stuff from KellyMom if you haven't read it yet. It's definitely not typical to have it 6 times in 8 months, so it may be a sign that something more is going on or if it's even going away completely.
