    Unhappy Need some help please

Hey ladies. I could use some advice/suggestions/help/positive mojo.

I am still nursing DD #2 (13 months today!). I have been fighting what I *think* is mastitis and/or a yeast infection in both breasts off & on over the entire time. I have taken multiple rounds of antibiotics, Diflucan, grapefruit seed extract, all purpose nipple cream (has steroid, antibiotic, antifungal), triple antibiotic ointment, & Gentian violet. Absolutely NOTHING is working. My OB has run out of ideas & wants me to see a dermatologist. She (my OB) ran a yeast culture a few weeks ago & it was negative.

The problem is this: it is so incredibly painful to nurse. The initial latch is like DD is ripping off my nipple. Then the pain subsides a little (never completely), but as soon as she unlatches, it feels like someone is shoving searing hot needles through my nipple up into my breast. Completely feels like a YI. And my poor left nipple - the skin on the end tore a few months ago & never has healed. It will almost heal, but after a few nursing sessions, it breaks right open again. It's almost like a big crack across the very end of my nipple. Even that wouldn't be so bad, but then it bleeds, which makes DD puke.

I don't want to stop nursing, especially because of something like this. She is the first kiddo I've been able to really nurse & it's created such a special relationship. But between the pain & the stress, my supply has tanked. I'm getting such a pathetically tiny amount, it's not even funny. I have been really hoping to make it as long as SHE wants to nurse, but I don't know what to do.

Oh sweet heart. It sounds like you are having vasospasms. Read this: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/moth...ple-blanching/

Vasospasms are usually the result of nipple injury and it sounds like you've got quite the injury. You need to get some ointment from the nearest LC. I can't remember what it's called, but it's clear and has some anti-fungal and anti-pain (might be anti-inflammatory, I can't remember).

Good news is once that's healed up completely, you should get relief. As for the pain after unlatching, have a warm compress handy. Apply that to your nipple immediately after she comes off of them. It helps. Avoid cold breezes and such, they make it worse. Aerobic activity can make it better, but usually only if it's caused by Reynaud's and not nipple trauma.

After re-reading your post I see that you've been having this problem for a majority of your nursing relationship, so you might actually be dealing with Reynaud's syndrome that is exacerbated by trauma. Read this: http://pediatrics.aappublications.or...13/4/e360.full

I hope Janelle's posts help! I have nothing else to add but my support. You are one heck of a rock star mama for dealing with this for 13 months!

You're welcome! I hope you find relief soon. I have vasospasms with the occasional nipple trauma and stress really causes them for me. Though mine are mild compared to most.
