Question about pumping at work

Would it work to put the breast pump parts in a bag and then to stick them in the thermal bag the pump comes with?

Or do I have to put them in a bag in the fridge?

Or do wipes clean the parts good enough to not cause problems?

Or do I have to rinse in a bathroom around the corner from the room I will be pumping in?

I have to carry the bag or bags from my classroom to the other room already, in front of whoever, adult or child, walking through the halls. I just want to find what would be the most comfortable for me, without ruining my breast pump.

I carry mine in a bag, and just rinse right away with water and wipe clean. I don't keep the parts in the fridge, just the BM obviously.

I'm sort of a special case because Teagan never really took to bottles and my milk goes stanky if its not scalded. I used one flange to pump one breast and then used the other to pump the second time. I quickly rinsed the flange after I used it and chucked it into my cooler bag. I only kept it in my cooler bag because I used to leave my pump at work and take just the cooler bag home. If I were to re-use a flange I would just wipe it out with a tissue and pop it in the fridge. You shouldn't have to clean the tubes unless milk gets in there (which happens occasionally).

Can you please promise me that you'll do a really quick and easy check before you start your stash to make sure you don't have the same lipase issues I have? Just take an ounce and put it in the fridge for a week. If it doesn't smell or taste bad by the end of the week you're good to go. Lipase issues are SUPER rare and easy to deal with but not knowing before you build a 200 oz stash REALLY REALLY sucks.

I only put BM in the fridge (or in your case a thermal bag) and the other parts on my pump bag. Now I'm not sure if you'll have access to a sink but just rinsing them off and sticking them back in the bag is what I do (at my middle pumping I'll actually wash them). Medela makes wipes if you don't have access to a sink.

Aren't you going to need the thermal bag for the pumped milk? I did not have a bag big enough for both items.

I would use the wipes, but then rinse really quickly too. I guess it felt weird to me to have "chemicals/soap" on the parts....

You could carry a baggie, put the pump parts in there, go to the kitchen, clean and then put back in your bag?



The other thing I did for awhile, is use a Medela Micro-Steam Bag. You would need access to water and a microwave though.

i pumped twice a day. after the first session, i wiped the pump parts with dry paper towels and wrapped them in dry paper towels, put them in the cooler bag with the milk. put the whole thing in the fridge. second (last) pumping session, I rinsed them with water, wiped them off with paper towels and put them in the pump bag to bring home to wash.

i was able to fit two bottles and 1 set of pump parts in the cooler bag...if i had to fit more than that in there (like if i was working from my car and needed ice packs) i brought a lunch bag of mine that was bigger and could fit 2 bottles, 1 pair of pump parts and ice packs... hope that makes sense.
