teething/ strike -- UPDATE :-(

I am not a mama who has an overabundamce of milk, I supplement already, but the last couple weeks my baby has cut 2 teeth and in the peak of it he will be hungry but just scream at the breast in pain. Lasy night I ended up giving him his supplement bottle before nursing just to stop him from screaming. Our nursing relationship is not perfect and I dont feel confident that we will sutvive the year, so any tips would be appreciated.

If you know that he's really hurting, I'd make sure he has a chance to chew and soothe himself before nursing time. Chewing on a cool cloth, or even some tylenol 20 minutes before you know you're going to nurse him might really help. I'm sorry and I hope that his little teeth break through and don't hurt him anymore!

update :-(

so today was worse than yesterday. He has refused to nurse all day. I tried for over an hour off and on this morning in every position imaginable expressing milk out to the tips of the breasts, using the nipple shield, tylenol and cold stuff on board and he just wouldn't have it for longer than 2 sucks. I worked all day and he took his bottles, then this afternoon he wouldn't have the nursing again. I gave him cereal and tried off and on for an hour then decided to go ahead and pump. I gave him a bottle of 2 oz and put him to sleep. once he's down a while I am going to try to feed him in his sleep, but that wasn't successful this morning. From what I read this can last 3-5 days. . .has anybody survived this without it ending the breast feeding relationship??

I'm doing what I can to support my supply during this oatmeal, malt, fenugreek, blessed thistle.

I nursed my first son past 1 year so this struggle is very hard for me knowing I'm capable of doing the long run.

When this happened to my LO, it wasn't just teeth...it ended up being an ear infection. Just an idea. I hope he eats! I did more feeding while she was sleeping, but once her ear infection got bad, she wouldn't eat at all.

ooh - good suggestion from Lissy. I'd get that checked, my kids have refused to nurse when they had an earache as well. My DS did a nursing strike for one day, but never stretched it out to multiple days. Sorry you're still going through this, hang in there!

he always has an ear infection, he's getting tubes the week he turns 6 months. I got him to sleep nurse last night. this morning he was back to being happy at the breast. I can only hope shots today dont set us back.

IME, DD wants to nurse more frequently for very short sessions when she's having a rough go with her teeth. Just about the only time I can get her to nurse well is at night and she wants nothing to do with bottles. So, I'm inclined to think it's not just his teeth. You'd be surprised at what they can get from short little nursing bursts though. For instance, this morning she was popping on and off for like 45 minutes. I could have sworn she wasn't getting anything but milk kept dribbling from her mouth. Just keep offering as much as you can. You'll get through this. Getting tubes put in might change everything for the two of you!

I've dealt with similar situation with DS's teeth. I would recomend to continue to pump as much as you can so your supply doesn't lessen. Also try taking some supplements if you aren't already. Finally, don't give up!! I've had several days of nursing strikes and thus far he has come back to nursing. I think it's extra stressful for us momma's that have to supplement.
